What a magical and rewarding game! It feels very similar in style to SpiritFarer and Hollow Knight, while still being a unique and creative take on the style. Even though it doesn't take too long to finish, it felt really well fleshed out and the character's side stories were still emotionally powerful despite it not being heavy on the narrative. The platforming and feel of moving through the different areas was really fun and just the right level of challenge, and I loved all the puzzles. Probably one of my favorite games of the last few years.

EASY 10/10 metroidvania. - Islets ran so Crypt Custodian could sprint. the dev's page says "I'm Kyle Thompson and I make metroidvanias" and it's true! - extremely pretty graphics and perfect sound design, crisp hit boxes and extremely fair combat. - double shout out to the OST and sound design by Kyle's brother Eric. - 11 hours to 100% on Hard mode, not including Boss Rush mode or the *built-in item randomizer* that unlocks for 100%ing the game. - I appreciate the randomizer being there but for me the game doesn't really have much replayability. there's not a crazy amount of enemy variety, and i suspect the non-boss combat would have gotten stale if i played on a lower difficulty. - Yet another metroidvania from this dev that's worth the full price at $20 and is a steal if you catch it on sale

Gosh, I love this game. I adore the stylized characters and lush environments. Encounters provide just enough challenge without sacrificing the game's more mellow tone. I was worried about the top-down combat, but the UI affordances for telegraphing Pluto's relationship to the ground are outstanding. I had so many satisfying "ah-ha!" moments as I explored every inch of this map. As with the developer's previous game, I am amazed that this was designed and programmed by one person. What a fun and special addition to the "search action" genre!

Wonderful and Cute! The gameplay has a good difficulty level at the "normal" level. All the NPCs are adorable and the character backstories are fantastic. Great for the Steamdeck!

Well I got pretty hooked on this game. Very solid metroidvania, as people have said if you like Deaths Door you will like this game, its only like 10 hours for 100% completion. It's actually a pretty relaxing game to play, and the art is very cute and charming. Some aspects like the music and the pretty standard puzzles do get repetitive, but overall this is a fun game with a lot of passion in it.

It started out like just a little game with a fun little story, but in the end, I gotta say, the ending really got me emotional. Beautiful game, would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a game that's not very intense, but still definitely worth a playtrough. Very well crafted, really exciting to explore this world, fun to play with the different load-outs, very interesting combat and puzzle-mechanics. Kudos to the makers!

A great metroidvania that checks all the boxes of the genre and but still brings its own thing to the table through the setting, story, and overall design. On a personal note, I’ve never spoken to Kyle, but from what I’ve seen of his posts on Reddit and the Steam forums, he just seems like a really humble and genuine dude who cares about making good games. What’s even cooler is seeing how much he improves as a game maker from one game to the next. You can literally see his design skills growing from one to the other. So it feels like he’s always pushing himself to do better, and as a fan, that’s really cool to see. One other thing I really want to point out, and maybe I’m projecting here, is how many of the design choices in Crypt Custodian seem focused on respecting the player’s time while still delivering the kind of experience you expect from a metroidvania. For example, you can fall off a ledge and lose a life if you mess up a jump, but you can’t just walk off the edge by accident. That small detail makes exploring feel fun instead of stressful, since you’re not constantly worried that one slip will cost you. There are time trial puzzles where you will die over and over trying to get them right, but the game doesn’t punish you by draining your life bar here eventually sending you back to a checkpoint. Your health is basically frozen in those sections, so you can keep practicing until you get it perfect without interruption. The same goes for "take no damage" fight challenge sections that reward you with upgrades. If you fail them they reset on the spot and you go again right there. Another smart choice is how all the upgrades work. To equip any upgrades you find you also have to collect and have enough upgrade equip tokens which scattered across the map. But once you’re about 40 to 50 percent through the game, you unlock a vendor where you can just also buy tokens. They cost a flat 600 each, the price never goes up, and you can buy as many as you need. So if you're just a couple points short of trying out a new ability setup, and the tokens you know of are behind tough puzzles or hard-to-reach areas, you don’t have to grind, go looking blindly for more or give up. You can just go buy them and keep playing the way you want. This isn't a shortcut. The balance of available tokens to upgrades is very well done. Just at times you will see you are just 1 or 2 short and this solution lets you bypass that bottleneck. There are plenty more little examples like this, and to me they all kind of piled up to create something that felt really fair and this kind of design really deserves praise in my eyes. With so many games in my backlog and only so much time to play, I really appreciate choices that don’t waste my time or punish me just for not adhering to "git gud". The challenge in Crypt Custodian comes from the good stuff imo. Solving puzzles, figuring out where to go on a huge map, dealing with big boss fights etc. It all feels challenging but also respectfully fair, and that’s what makes the game such a solid experience from start to finish. So thanks for making awesome games Kyle. You a true OG in my eyes.
