Settlements Rising is a city-building strategy game that wears its inspiration on its sleeve, namely Banished. If you’ve played that 2014 classic, you’ll feel right at home here. It trades the medieval realism of Banished for a slightly stylized visual presentation, but the core gameplay loop remains similar: manage a small group of settlers, expand your village, balance resources, and survive the elements. On lower settings, it’s entirely possible to reach a thriving endgame without much friction. For some, that might come across as too easy, but for others, it’s a welcome option to enjoy the building and management aspects without the constant fear of collapse. Crank the difficulty up, however, and Settlements Rising can quickly demand your full attention, punishing poor planning with harsh winters and resource shortages. Unlike games such as Anno, which focus heavily on trade and production chains, Settlements Rising is more grounded and survival-focused, just like Banished. There’s a purity in its mechanics that rewards strategic growth and thoughtful expansion over market manipulation or naval control. In short, if you’re a fan of Banished and want a spiritual successor with a new coat of paint, more difficulty customization, and a few quality-of-life improvements, Settlements Rising is worth a look. This game is fun. I was looking for something like Dawn of Man (great game) and this is sort of like it. I finished it really though, first time around. 16ish hours. So now its like, do it all again on hard for what? Not even achievements. But on sale, its worth buying for the first time play.

Settlements Rising presents a user interface that is delightfully clear and intuitively navigable. However, the visual aesthetic leans heavily towards an indie or candy-like style. Regrettably, the gameplay offers little progression or substantive engagement; I found myself losing interest well before reaching the three-hour mark unlike all the other games I played with 100+ hours playing and still going strong. That said, the musical score is quite splendid — atmospheric and well-composed, it lends the game a sense of depth that the mechanics themselves do not yet sustain and better than other games in this genre. There is undeniable potential here, but it feels as though two-thirds of the game is still awaiting development.

Ever since the first time i played banished i was craving for a similar yet more concentrated and cleaner and more simplistic artsy experience, this game got me satisfied alright. Still don't understand the creative idea behind the enhancement cards, 10/10
