I'd love it to be a bit longer. I enjoyed the gameplay a lot, it's clever and a lot of fun. Not too difficult and good for slower thinkers like me

Had my eye on this ever since I saw some of the lovely background art floating around online. Now that I've had the chance to play through it, some thoughts:
* The combat system is easily the most unique aspect of the game. It takes a bit to wrap your head around, but once it clicks, it's very tactical while also allowing for more expressive, freeform play. It can be a little imprecise at times, but you can instantly restart combat or retreat most of the time, which is really convenient. I wasn't a big fan of the ghost mechanic, but you can turn them off in the accessibility settings which is nice.
* The skill tree system is well done, it feels like you're constantly unlocking meaningful new abilities for combat. Items are powerful too, which makes your loadout choices feel important.
* The art and music are stunning, they do a great job of bringing the world to life.
* I really enjoyed how the game was broken up into a bunch of little encounters, it does a good job of keeping things varied and interesting. (Especially when you have access to different options depending on what items you have.) This system isn't perfect though, a lot of times it feels like it funnels you into combat regardless of your choices. And in the situations where you can avoid combat, the pacifist decision is frequently to ignore the encounter entirely, which is a bit of a bummer.
* The dialogue is probably the weakest part of the game for me. While the worldbuilding and setting are really interesting, the writing felt tonally inconsistent. The game's occasional self aware sense of humor wasn't for me I suppose, it felt like it undermined the more serious story the game was trying to tell.
* There were a number of bugs and performance issues I ran into, but nothing game-breaking.
Overall, I really enjoyed it! The unique ideas and mechanics it executed well on far outweigh the flaws. Definitely give a it a playthrough if it looks interesting to you, it feels appropriately fleshed out with being padded (my playthrough took about 18 hours)

+ the soundtrack and the visuals are very good
- the combat is a big nope. to me the game has no replayability due to the fact I've redone fights so often i already feel like I've played it thrice over - at 25%-30% in. it s about finding that sweet spot between using the right ability and using trial-and-error to find that one place that allows for a good defense. will you be able to make your hit land before your opponent's? join me through a dozen resets to find out. I don't mean this about the actions that land before melee, I refer to not knowing if you can safely use your ranged attacks and whittle down enemy xp before his random projectiles hit you
- if you skip content because unidirectional arrows... good luck. learn your lesson, restart the playthrough, save often
- abilities are also unidirectional - no tree reset? and why do vendors just buy certain things? I've got items I want to sell because I do not want to use them and there s nobody to sell to.

Pixel art is v impressive, you get the feeling of the vast expanse of outdoors in 8-bit. Combat is super fun and story line is ultimately very engaging. Wish I had a better idea of when the story will jump from one act to the next since I tend to resource guard and end up not getting to use anything I ever accrue, but perhaps that's the point..?

- storybook tactics that strike the perfect tonal chord - but the at-first-crunchy-looking gameplay is floaty and loose; does the thing tactics games should not do, where I’m not sure exactly what’ll happen when I input commands. In my last play session, I was dying and restarting the same encounter over and over again, because I couldn’t “read” what my character was doing - if he would attack before the opponent did, whether his attack would land or not. Turn based tactics live and die by near-perfect information, but I felt like I was getting Duplo-level information for a Lego-tier experience. And there was no stakes or cost or save point recovery. So the game was like a bad dungeonmaster leaning over my shoulder going, “Ah, ah, ah! You haven’t solved my puzzle the RIGHT WAY yet!”
- overworld gives “choices” without meaning - go left or right to end up at the same place. overambitious multi-threaded story with different characters pushes against my investment in their stories.
- I SHOULD like this game, which makes me twice as annoyed that I don’t. Keep an eye on the dev, but I felt my agency continually confused at the tactical and the story level of this game.

Please play Arco. This game didn’t sell well, possibly because the first impression you get from its screenshots is that it’s yet another pixel art indie game. While that is strictly true it’s also incredibly reductive.
Playing the game you get a real sense of place unlike I’ve experienced in an RPG in a while. Arco’s writing consists of many hard hitting one liners like we come to expect from western films but has rarely been seen in games.
It’s also full of twists and turns. Remember that moment you get ripped off by the banker in Hollow Knight? This has a lot of those moments but they never feel contrived.
On top of the atmosphere there’s also a very innovative half turn based, half real time, combat system that I haven’t experienced before and that has real considerations for how you approach combat.
It just all comes together beautifully. Arco is in many ways more than the sum of its parts.
