Really great game! The story and world are fantastic. It took me a little while to to get comfortable with the combat, but it's really satisfying once your character build start progressing.

Worth playing for combat alone, if nothing else. It's a ton of fun. Such creative design. Very well done. Narratively this is a standard revenge story, but told well. Decent music, too.
One thing I didn't like were using emojis in dialogues. This breaks immersion and is honestly very cringe. Are these characters talking on Discord or something? Ugh.

Would I recommend? Oh yes.
Great story, great visuals. Sometimes the UI is a little clunky, with all the dragging around, but it does not take away from the game experience.
Divided into 4 arcs (lol), you will see through various stories that intertwine as you navigate a beautiful and dangerous magical piece of history.

Quaint visual and good narrative mixed with a fun combat system. Highly recommend. Only fault for me was that the final boss fight felt a lot easier than previous fights.
10/10 would be mesoamerican again

I don't often review, but I really had a blast with Arco. Certainly a game I'll revisit a few years down the road once I've gotten some distance from it. The pixel art is lovely, the gameplay is fun, the soundtrack is wonderful and atmospheric, and the narrative tugs at the heartstrings. Arco is worth buying at full price, and a steal while on sale.
The devs really knocked it out of the park with this one, and I'd love to see what else this team puts out in the future.

An under-discussed gem of 2024 and would be a strong GOTY contender were it not for 1000xRESIST and Mouthwashing,
The gameplay feels fresh, combining elements of turn-based RPG, bullet hell and RTS that doesn't feel quite like anything else. The pixel art is minimalist, but charming. Where the art direction really shines through is in the writing and sound design. The music is evocative and the SFX pleasently crunchy in an old school sort of way. The story, while interrupted slightly by the POV changes, is a moving tale of revenge and purpose that isn't highly original, but is executed wonderfully. Also the jokes are actually funny, which is always a pleasant surprise.
Highly recommended. Really scratched the itch left by RDR2 despite being in a package that takes an entirely different direction. Very much looking forward to what else the studio does.
(Also, as a minor criticism for the devs, I would love more options for sound levels etc. that are accessible from inside the game.)

- storybook tactics that strike the perfect tonal chord - but the at-first-crunchy-looking gameplay is floaty and loose; does the thing tactics games should not do, where I’m not sure exactly what’ll happen when I input commands. In my last play session, I was dying and restarting the same encounter over and over again, because I couldn’t “read” what my character was doing - if he would attack before the opponent did, whether his attack would land or not. Turn based tactics live and die by near-perfect information, but I felt like I was getting Duplo-level information for a Lego-tier experience. And there was no stakes or cost or save point recovery. So the game was like a bad dungeonmaster leaning over my shoulder going, “Ah, ah, ah! You haven’t solved my puzzle the RIGHT WAY yet!”
- overworld gives “choices” without meaning - go left or right to end up at the same place. overambitious multi-threaded story with different characters pushes against my investment in their stories.
- I SHOULD like this game, which makes me twice as annoyed that I don’t. Keep an eye on the dev, but I felt my agency continually confused at the tactical and the story level of this game.
