It's cute, it's fun, it's got a lot of love and respect for the games that inspired it. The biggest things to know going into it is that it is not a Zelda, Final Fantasy, or Diablo clone in the sense that any of these mechanics are fully fleshed out of finely polished. If you go into it with the expectation of a walking documentary with changing mechanics used to watch the growth of video games from 8 bit to 3D then I think you'll enjoy it. The turn based combat goes from feeling tongue-in-cheek grindy to a little exhausting by the end of it. There's almost no depth to it outside of using a portion of attacking with 2 more options appearing by end game. The Zelda like dungeons are occasionally made more difficult from the controls not feeling the tightest or most responsive. And the hack and slash doesn't feel like you can get a rhythm to effectively keep the enemies off of you, which they counter by giving you an abundance of health dropped from enemies.
There's a lot of fun references throughout the game and seeing the styles and gameplay change in real time can be very nostalgic. Just don't expect it to feel like a perfect mashup of the previous mentioned games. It was made by a small team with a lot of love for the history of the medium. If you're looking for an interactive walk through a museum of some of the early days of video games and you know what you're getting, I think this game is a lot of fun

A nice and neat experience that recalls the not-so-polished past of this industry. Fun if you have nostalgia for the JRPGs of old and somewhat lackluster if you were interested in a complete trip through memory lane

Generic, repetitive, boring and not innovative, are some words that I can call this documentary wearing a trench coat and pretending to be a game. I know I only have two and a half hours in this game but I have to say that I had a more enjoyable time playing getting over it. Here are some issues I had with the game that have caused me to stop playing:
-THE. CONSTANT. RANDOM. BATTLES.
I cannot describe the pure dissatisfaction of having to go through a field with random encounters every seven steps. Genuinely, if someone says that items that remove or lessen random battles are useless then force them to play this game. They will see they're VERY wrong.
-Progression nosedive.
When you start the game, you are showered in new features. Like the stream of new features or not, they're completely gone after you leave the first zone. Seriously, there is nothing other than stars, new textures and cards after the opening 15 minutes. It doesn't matter how much glitter and paint you throw on a broken wall, it's still broken.
-Too many games, too little variety.
I see the inspirations for this game. The thing is that is the only thing visible. There is nothing to make this game stand out. The story is just a bland blend of the inspirations but without anything noteworthy.
tl:dr This game has too frequent random encounters, a progression cliff and nothing memorable about it.
I am not playing this again unless I'm not fully conscious or I have literally any other game in my library.
