Simple, cute, strangely addicting. This is a really fun way to cool off after work, or idly pass the time. I'd love a mobile version to diddle with.

It's a bittersweet feeling.
Something like this comes out, it's straightforward, fun and re-playable, somehow makes me think of successful games like Vampire Survivors and Deep Rock Galactic which nailed said aspects and remained streamlined in their essence, and then there are games either full of visuals details, things happening in the background, and/or activities/quests with their own mechanics that at the end seem to forget what video games should be about.
Done right, less can be more.
One of the games of 2023 and possibly of all time
On the Job is a game which accomplishes surprisingly a lot with very little. The basic idea is combining a turn-based stealth puzzle with some light roguelike elements. You are an agent who has to advance through as many randomly generated floors as possible on a limited budget of health and ammo, collecting as many documents and $$$ on the way as you can. Enemies move together with you so you have to mind your routing and positioning.
Between levels you receive random upgrades such as wall-penetrating bullets or the ability to melee, of which there isn't a lot and there's definitely more of a focus on using your brain instead of making a build that plays the game for you. But they still change the way you approach levels quite a bit.
There are also several game modes you can try which alter the objectives or enemy compositions, giving surprising amounts of replayability.
The graphics consist of static MS Paint sprites, but they have enough charm to not feel like just placeholders. Instead they give me the vibe of old PC puzzle games you'd find on gaming magazine CDs, which works.
In the current early access state, RNG can get too RNG sometimes, sometimes spawning you in situations that are unwinnable or too easy to solve. But overall the game is surprisingly addictive for something that looks so simple, and you can easily spend hours hunting for achievements. Looking forward to more features like persistent upgrades

"On The Job" offers a turn-based, roguelite stealth gameplay experience that tasks players with navigating through a series of levels filled with guards and obstacles. Your primary objective is to sneak past these challenges, collecting top-secret documents with gadgets and upgrades along the way. The game features generated levels, ensuring that each playthrough presents a random set of scenarios.
As you progress through the levels, you'll need to carefully plan your moves to avoid detection. The turn-based nature of the game allows you to take your time and strategize, taking into account the movements and line of sight of the guards. Successfully evading enemies and completing levels will reward you with money to purchase items from the Store that can aid you in future missions.
"On The Job" is a unique game that presents a distinctive blend of procedural generation and top-down gameplay. While there is certainly room for improvement, the game possesses some qualities that could serve as building blocks for future updates.
One aspect of the game that could benefit from additional attention is its art design. The graphics, while possessing a childlike charm, might not appeal to everyone. Implementing more polished visuals could elevate the game's overall aesthetic and create a more visually appealing experience.
Furthermore, introducing a windowed mode would be a welcome addition for players who prefer this option. In today's gaming landscape, offering flexible display settings is an essential component of any title. With the game being developed using Unity, the potential for incorporating a windowed mode is certainly within reach.
The gameplay mechanics of "On The Job" could also be expanded upon to provide a more consistant experience. Addressing dead-end situations where players are placed in unwinnable scenarios could enhance the enjoyability of the game.
The game does not feature any mouse functionality. It uses only a keyboard or a game controller to play. Although the game recently left Early Access, it still has two Coming Soon features, and I did not see the promised Editor for players to create their own levels.
In conclusion, "On The Job" offers a foundation upon which future updates could build and improve. With a focus on refining the graphics, adding essential features such as window mode, and removing dead-end situations, this game has the potential to evolve into a more polished experience for players.

The game's charm comes from its simplicity. The controls are easy to master, and the game's low-stakes nature means you can enjoy it at your own pace. You can choose to follow the main storyline or explore the maze at your leisure, discovering hidden treasures and engaging in side quests such as earning enough money to became the color green (Which is my favorite color)
