I think that it is fair to say that Polar Bear Game is bad, with that noted I do think it is also fair to say that it is interesting. Looking at the core gameplay loop it is abysmal. Essentially you are supposed to gather resources, build, and fight monsters like many other sandbox open-world games. However, this game is so limited in what you can actually do that it would be disingenuous to call it a sandbox. You only have a single hotbar’s worth of items (12 if I remember correctly) so your creativity is shot, that is right it is not that you can only hold 12 items, the game only has that many. Combat is nothing but holding down the right-click button and praying that you are at the right distance to hit the enemy while being out of their range. After killing a bunch of enemies and/or gathering an obscene number of resources you then level up either HP or Stamina. This is especially annoying because the balancing feels weird, I found that balancing the health and stamina was the best way to go and so there is a right way to play. You would hope that enemies would be interesting, they are not all the variety that enemies have is their size and health. And true to the arctic, the landscape is void of much of anything interesting (just rocks and trees to harvest and a few boxes with loot) so exploration is pretty terrible too. That is it that is the game. Sure you can go for the achievements, but why would you? That would be boring, and you would just be wasting your time and increasing your power bill for no reason. The game has no story. That is not a criticism, not every game needs one, but it is just good to note if you are a story-based player. What is interesting though is that a lot of open-world crafting games do kind of have one or at least have a kind of goal (think of Minecraft and the goal of fighting the Ender Dragon, and Terraria and its progressing bosses). Though story is unnecessary I do think having a directioned goal may have added more to this game. Graphically the game is dead simple, which is fine. In fact, I even kind of like the style. I have a soft spot for simplistic styles and what assets this game has are done in a simplistic style that I like. The problem is the colors. During the day it is white, just white with a few rocks and trees breaking up the monotony which given the setting is fitting, but hills and other landmarks to return to your base are hard to find. Sunset is the worst though it becomes this nauseating deep orange that blends everything together, which makes it so hard to see anything. However, nights are properly dark, and I think that looks decent. The choices of enemies and how they look, and move is… odd. The enemies are essentially items that you can craft in various sizes (or trees and rocks), other polar bears, and penguins. Ever seen a chair or torch walk? Yeah, it looks weird. It just kind of swings around in a predictable fashion. So all in all, style is good, but everything else is bad. Sound-wise you have very little. Harvesting sound, building sound, damaging sound, (and worst of all) the constant walking sound. That is it. It’s repetitive and bad. This is not a good game, so what makes this game interesting as I noted at the beginning? Well, I just think that the concept is odd, and I like that. I picked up this game because I love arctic animals, and I was intrigued to see someone do something with polar bears no matter how simple it was. Also, this looks like a unique and fun first/student project and honestly, it is better than anything I could make to be fair. If you are wanting something to play, yeah stay away, but if you want to support a small developer with odd ideas, I think it is worth the $3 ($2.09 on its lowest sale).

This is a very cute game. A lot to be desired and the combat is essentially meaningless, but building my house was fun enough, and by time I was done with my little fenced house, I was pretty happy with how it looked. Worth $2.99? Not sure about that. I got it on sale because I saw it was just released, and figured "why not". Cute and silly. Easy achievements. I would love for this game to get badges so I could display a little polar bear badge.
