This is literally the only good thing to come out of The Farm 51, and they left it broken for years after release. Go play the original Painkiller, it's literally 5 times as long and half as broken

Do you like top-down shooter? Then you will love it. You get 5 remade levels from previous games. This DLC is better than others because of the top-down feature.
Rating: 3/5
When gaming at this top view the aspect ratio of the resolution in use aggressively cuts the gaming view(top and bottom) the wider you go. FullHD (16:9) is playable. UltraWIde 21:9 has ~50% less view area than 16:9. My monitor (32:9) has 2-4 times less the view area than FullHD and I thought it was meant to be that way!... until I saw boss walkthrough videos at youtube. I took a screenshot of every resolution and I can confirm that 1280x1024 is ultimately the best but 1600x1024 is not too bad and has more data for your eyes(as the former resolution is a big cut in pixel data throughput compared to FullHD and thus resembles more the old nineties gaming era. With 32:9 you literally can only see 1-2m outwards from the character. I grinded 1-2 maps that way with trauma. I think this same applies to hatred too as I had this same headache with it and both are done with unreal engine. 1280x1024 is a great painkiller for this. Besides that the levels are great and dead fun to play.

Amazing DLC and totally unexpected. Painkiller: Hell and Damnation is a remaster of the first Painkiller game and its expansion: Battle Out of Hell. The game follows the same story line and mechanics, but offers a lot more content like challenge maps, a unique Halloween map and the introduction of co-op. It now runs on the Unreal Engine and looks fantastic. You can clearly see that this is a game of the new millennium. Some stages are not available until you buy them as DLC, the same goes for the Tarot cards and skins. And speaking of DLC, this game has a ton of it. You never have the feeling that you have a complete game because you miss some random DLC. The only game that I know of that is worse than this, is Borderlands 2 with its million pieces of DLC. The third DLC I completed was Painkiller Hell & Damnation Heaven's Above. This one came as a suprise for me. Suddenly, I played from a top down perspective and was playing a completely different game. It inmidiatly switched to some sort of Contra game, with some puzzle solving. I actually enjoyed this way of playing very much and had a lot of fun completing the five new maps, and beating the Boss at the end. From all the million DLC this game offers, I think this one is my favorite. In the end, I still think Painkiller: Hell and Damnation is a good game, just not as epic as the original game and its expansion. This is mainly because of the commercial vibe that this game has and the missing levels and enemies, but when playing, it still feels like Painkiller. Still recommend it though.

After 'COD:Black Ops' doing the old arcade style 3rd person view from above to shoot hordes of zombies, Painkiller does the same thing with hordes of demons and new weird bosses. There are some simple yet clever puzzles but ultimately playing alone is not that fun, if there was enough coop players around this could be cool. Like playing Diablo with a shotgun, kinda. I'd buy it for a buck or two, full price it's not a hell of a bargain for the 5 levels you get.

This is by far the worst expansion and content of the whole Painkiller series!! This is HELL! And I previously thought that Resurrection was the worst entry by far! Buy this even is worse. Bad, buggy, boring and even unfair! Cruel and unnecessary platform segments! IMPOSSIBLE to win without Health Steal Card and even with that so much unfairness around this levels! I played on Trauma and somehow after hours of dying and having the worst time in the whole series finally managed to get to the 5th and final level. I could'nt kill the final Ovni boss!! It's broken. It kills you with 4 shots and the anti air rockets don't hit him unless the ovni comes next to it. And trust me you will die. This is such a terrible experience. How can you release this? I have complains on the base game but overall I enjoyed the remaster! It's good! But this is a whole other monster! Top down view it's broken! The music stops! The camera can't stop glitching! Even PS1 games have better camera angle!!! The only level that I was sort of enjoying was the last one until that broken Ovni appeared. All bosses are crap. It's soo bad! Don't even think of trying this DLC. Save yourself! I literally can't say a good thing about this. Even Resurrection "tried". This is the worst experience I had in a long time. This expansion shouldn't exist. An abismal and bad vomit score of 1/10. I had more fun staring at my sofa at night than playing this.

They say that good old-school FPS make a good top-down shooters when viewed from above. All as you have to avoid projectiles while also managing a horde, they don't lose much in such trasnaction. The article that where I read such thing was demonstarting it on Doom. By opening auto-map and showing how you avoid projectiles. That would make quite a nice arcade shooter. Painkiller on other hand, as it turns out, has more common roots with zombie themed one. Projectiles are rare and you mostly have to manage crowds, running away in circles. Anyway, this DLC turns Painkiller into twin-stick top-down shooter. Well, keyboard+mouse one. And it's actually a pretty good one, not just cash-grab. You kill more enemies than you would do it in main game. But at least main hero feels powered up. Shotgun sure is. You don't even have to worry about enemies with shields, shields are ignored there. I wasn't exactly sure that it would be good. First level didn't start exciting, as it was simple corridor where you kill everything by shooting into one direction. Thankfully, it would become actually challenging later on. Not only that, but it had a surpringly great pacing. It mixes action with bosses, puzzles and traps. Yes, it actually features small puzzles to break things up, something what main game perhaps could use. Jolly! And they didn't bring hitscan enemies either, clearly sane. There are flaws though. Not major ones though. First, camera changes height and angle dynamically, trying to show what it thinks player want to see. It isn't always succesful, sometimes it's position in such way that you will barely see anything in direction that you make your character walk to. Then level 4 has a difficulty spike at the last room, where you are facing the boss. Tough enemies are overwhelming there. And then, strangely, there was no music at the last part of level 5, it just went away. Levels themselves also look nicely. Interestingly, it has 2 maps that come from Recurring Evil! I have no idea, maybe somebody in development team helped with that expansion pack before. But hey, those levels actually were nice, it's just dragged gameplay of that game that was ruining everything. It playes better here for sure. Anyway, really nice original DLC. And uh, there is a new Tarot Card that "recovers health after 10 seconds after getting damaged". Or something.

An interesting idea as Heaven's Above sports 5 new levels but turns Painkiller into a top-down shooter. I do not feel that this fills any gap as there was no need for this. Still, the levels are enjoyable - too bad Graveyard and Angkor have several narrow corridors. Also, you can easily get stuck in the environment and the camera is not always helpful. Going back to Angkor: this seems to be the only new level as the rest are top-down versions of their original counterpart. The golem boss seems to be annoying at first but using Painkiller should finish it off in no time. You will notice that some of the levels have puzzles - using pressure plates on Babel to find secrets was certainly a good idea. Also, going top-down makes our demon morph mode even more important! Overall, I had fun with this DLC and I am upvoting it as unlike the majority of the extra content this was not born by removing levels of the original game and its expansion. It is a refreshing idea but with lacklustre execution.
