I like this game a lot for reasons many game critics probably won't, and that can be summarised to how far off the checkpoints are from one another (even bosses not having checkpoints), and the lacking mitigation of challenge, like gaining the invincibility leaf in super mario world 3d by dying repeatedly. Instead it apts for the service of encouraging players by rewarding players for utilising mechanics in levels that include air dodging through obstacles at the right time to gain a moment of I frames WITH additional dash attacks, and having the little triangles you collect not only (albeit slowly) recover your health but also (once you collect enough) give you an instant revival just when you think your down for the count. The aforementioned challenges steadily but surely amount to hectic ordeals with lots of platforming requiring you to be nimble but also be quick to get on again, (hopefully at the right time and platform), while taking count of the dashes and jumps you have. The collectathon part to this game however, is more a series of obstacles that are between you and the collectibles, the game likes to call flash drives, rather than a token hidden in the level somewhere you'll have to find (Not a punt on the game design just something I realised) The bosses are also all very good, requiring you to use the gimmicks you've learnt during levels to evade the bosses attacks while still giving them what for. A lot of games nowadays feel like they'd regulate this kind of stuff to a harder mode or a checklist of things you have to do in level; this isn't an issue per se, yet it feels like they're hiding it from an audience of players who want to experience an avenue of challenges that'll test their mettle and raise their adrenaline. But this game doesn't feel like it shys away from that audience at all, and obliges players to levels that require a good amount of attention and execution while still being fair. This game may intimidate players who wish for a casual and easygoing game, but I think it's great that this game feels like it focuses more on the demand for challenge filled platformers, rather than the inbetween that feels too hazardous in its approach to be ambitious with itself. So this coming from a guy who's done 80% of it all (sadly couldn't find the rest of the 12 flash drives...), I say try the demo out first, because that's pretty much how I knew the game was for me just from that... Also midi music for the win. peace.

For some background, I initially found out about this game from the Developer posting about it in a Discord Server I'm in. After some initial ribbing (because of course) I got the demo and played it, from then on I was hooked... To summarise the game as simply as I can, it is a 2D Collectathon Platformer that, quoting the developer, "is meant to be a spiritual successor to Super Mario 63", and while it may not look like that from the outset, it wears it's inspirations on it's sleeve proudly. The general gameplay loop of going between a selection of levels in a Hub World, and searching for Primary Collectibles to achieve a grander goal very much takes it's roots from the Classic 3D Mario Formula. But the game makes it's own flavour with it, and it's a blast to play through. To get the elephant of the room adressed, I will acknowledge that the game may not look the most appealing (especially in the modern landscape of Raytraced Photo-Realistic Graphics and/or Super Stylized Art Pieces), but the "simpler" art style this game has works in it's favour if you ask me. It makes things very easy to understand with a quick glance, and gives the whole game an Authentically Earnest vibe that is a joy to look at. Beyond that, the gameplay is a joy to pick up and rewarding to master. Clifford's signature Cone Rush ability is well utilised throughout the game for some challenging platforming. But by far my favourite move to use is the Air Dash, on it's own it may seem like yet another horizontal movement option, but with the added feature of Star Guard allowing you to "parry" enemy attacks and obstacles makes it thrilling to try and use it to speed through obstacles. And while there are some issues I have with the movement (such as jumping being one of two fixed heights, something one should be wary of when precisely manoeuvring a level) they aren't too impactful to the experience overall, and are easily counteracted by smarter play. The Story is also a real treat to watch unfold. The overall quest of the game involves the player as Clifford, guided by his friend Boxer, to find and collect A large amount of missing Flash Drives scattered around the world to repair Boxer's home: the Star Prism. It makes for a simple enough plot to get you motivated on the adventure, but leads into a fun and engaging story as the opposing force gets developed, and provides intriguing concepts for worldbuilding when you learn about the Star Prism's origins. I won't spoil too much of the story however, as I want to leave that as something prospecting players can enjoy :] The characters are also a treat to see. The main characters of Clifford and Boxer bounce off of eachother impeccably, with Boxer being more Analytical and Clifford being a Wide-Eyed adventurer looking forward to the next thing to do. And beyond our two leads, the side characters and NPCs have some great interactions with the Duo as well. The bosses all have great personalities that really sell them as characters beyond differing attack patterns, and they have some wholesome and funny interactions with the Main Duo.

Overall, this game truly is a Hidden Gem, if you haven't played it yet then you should. It is definitely worth much more attention than it currently has (as of writing this is the only review on the Steam Page, which is rather unfortunate.) It's only 13 dollars, and well worth the money! >:]

★ Addendum ★
[strike]I have yet to 100% complete the game, but I don't think there's anything in the Post-Game or otherwise that will detract my score.[/strike] I have since completed the 100% Ending >:] (Funny story of which, I encountered a glitch which had softlocked me from getting one of the collectables to reach said ending, however after contacting the developer about it, they worked out a patch pretty quickly and I was able to beat it. So thanks to them again for that 🙂) To avoid spoilers as much as possible (because, and I cannot stress this enough, you should play this game and see the story for yourself.) the bonus and finale level towards 100% Completion were very great challenges for the endgame, and took the story in a very intriguing turn. Come the True Actual For-Realsies Final Boss, it tied the story together brilliantly, with a surprisingly emotional ending considering everything else the game had going for it previously, and I was all for it! The ending tied all* of the loose ends that the normal ending left, and it was a Great experience from start to finish. And while the game is pretty short compared to most games (11-ish hours for the Normal ending, and 17 or so for 100% (from my experience)) I'd say it's very great for it's runtime, so it's not a problem for me whatsoever! *There is a certain moment in the ending which doesn't yet get addressed (as far as I can tell), which leads me to believe there may or may not be a Post-Game DLC/Update and/or a Sequel, in which case I will gladly try out >:] I'll be honest and say that, since I first picked up this game, it has become a bit of a Hyperfixation of Mine. And it leaves me as one of the Greatest Indie Games I have ever played, let alone made by an individual person! I enjoyed the time I spent with this game, and may even pick it up again to mess around with in the future! But for now, this game is Very Much So worth purchasing, and I eagerly await for what the Developer is cooking up next. Over and Out! ★
