I'm going to give this a positive review as I enjoyed my playing through it, though there were a number of features that I disliked:
1. I found this game due to having played underwater exploration games like "Loddlenaut" or "In Other Waters" (both of which are lovely by the way), but found this game to be far more limited than the others in both length and the space you can explore, the latter being a result of its side-scrolling nature. In the other games, the area you can explore is open and one can travel in almost any direction, but in "The Kaiyo Mission" your movement is constrained to vertical and side-to-side motion. This makes the vast alien oceans feel small and constrained.
2. I understand that the reason the developers included African music in the game was due to a tendency for only certain types of Western music being associated with science fiction. Additionally, I think the music fits very well in the bonus stage and sets the mood perfectly. However, the upbeat music, for me at least, seems out of place in the depths of Enceladus and Europa, to the point that I felt it was better to play those stages with the music off.
3. The art in the game, especially for the creatures, seems a bit lacking, which is unfortunate given that I love reading all of the entries about the wildlife.
However, despite my criticisms, there also several aspects that I enjoyed:
1. The gameplay is quite nice, and I enjoyed swimming and snapping photographs of the seafloor and its inhabitants, even with the limited scope. If only it could have gone on a little longer.
2. The story, though simplistic, is enjoyable, and this game contains an optimistic depiction of an interaction between humans and sapient aliens, something which seems exceedingly rare in all the media I've seen recently.
