This is a neat evolution of those old marble platformers. While those were more about completing challenges with precision, here precision rewards you with faster time, less damage, and shortcuts. I love how the weight and power of the boulder is balanced with its fragility and changes as it takes damage. Smashing stuff is fun and rewards you with money, but you also have to save yourself to bash down the enemy’s door.
Both you and your opponent split your efforts between navigating boulders towards each others’ goals and setting up tower defense systems to frustrate one another. The perfectly symmetrical gameplay allows you to observe how your opponent builds and reacts to obstacles, teaching you strategies for both halves of the game.
The single-player campaign is fine. It does its job well enough, and the Monty Python-style animations are cute. That said, while it’s not something you should really expect great storytelling from, it stops including Sisyphus in the cutscenes halfway through the campaign until the final boss, which feels a bit lazy. Speaking of which, the bosses are pretty underwhelming, hit the weak spot challenges. The second and final bosses at least look cool, but the dragon and baby head? Ugh. The difficulty on singleplayer is also pretty low, and the curve feels a little inconsistent, but while the challenge isn’t really there, the competition is still fun. Obviously, if you want a real challenge, play multiplayer.
Add the time trials, which help teach the course layouts in addition to being fun challenges themselves, and you have a pretty rock-solid game, albeit one you’ll get the most out of in multiplayer. I have a couple nitpicks with the wonky menu controls, and for some reason I couldn’t move the window when I exited fullscreen, but they’re nothing to get hung up on.
I don’t currently own the sequel or threequel, so if you’re trying to decide on just one to buy, I can’t say. I tried online multiplayer a few different times and could only find one person, and the server couldn’t connect us, so maybe give this a second thought if you don’t have any friends. The second one looks pretty well-liked, so maybe ask around comparing this and that, see where the community and support is at. What I can say is that this is the cheapest of the bunch and is, if not complete, a pretty well-rounded experience.

Watched this game a lot when I was little, and honestly the game is just as good as I remember it being. Controls can be a bit junky at the start but it's easy to learn. Pretty creative way of making cutscenes too.

For starters, this game revolves around the magnificent concept of controlling a boulder down a slope in order to destroy the enemy's castle gate. That's pretty cool. The controls feel a bit janky at first but you get used to them, and the strategy needed for the defensive phase is nice. The irony and humor of the settings and (simple) story tie the whole thing together.
It's less polished (and much more linear) than the sequel, but I highly suggest playing it cause it's honestly just a really fun game. It takes about 6/7 hours to finish the main story but there are time attacks and some other side content too.
