A Mixed Bag of Thrills and Chills
Rating: ★★★☆☆
*Resident Evil 6* is an ambitious entry in the long-running franchise that takes the series in a new direction. With multiple campaigns featuring familiar faces like Leon, Chris, and Ada, the game attempts to blend intense action with the horror elements that fans love—but does it hit the mark?
First off, let’s talk gameplay. The action is ramped up, and the game feels less like a horror experience and more like a high-octane action flick. The combat system has evolved, allowing for smoother movements and a more dynamic range of attacks. The addition of co-op gameplay is a nice touch too, whether you choose to tackle the story with a friend or AI. However, this shift towards action does sacrifice some of the tension and atmosphere that defined earlier titles in the series.
Visually, *Resident Evil 6* looks great, with well-designed environments and detailed character models. The cinematics are cinematic in every sense, giving it a blockbuster feel. The presentation is top-notch, but sometimes it feels like the focus is more on spectacle than substance.
The story, while ambitious, tries to juggle too many plotlines at once. There are moments that shine, especially in Leon’s campaign, which harkens back to the series’ roots. Meanwhile, Chris’s story dives into more action-heavy territory, which might alienate some long-time fans. It’s a mixed bag, but there are enough thrilling moments to keep you engaged.
At its core, *Resident Evil 6* is a fun ride if you’re in the mood for over-the-top action and don’t mind that it strays from the horror formula we once loved. It’s a must-try for fans who want to see the evolution of the series, but it may leave hardcore survival horror enthusiasts feeling a bit hollow. While it may not be perfect, I had a blast with it—even if it wasn’t the *Resident Evil* experience I was hoping for.

Resident Evil 6 is an ambitious but uneven entry that tries to be everything at once—survival horror, action shooter, and cinematic thriller. With four intersecting campaigns, it offers a huge amount of content, but not all of it hits the mark.
Leon’s story leans into classic horror and works best, while Chris’s and Jake’s campaigns often feel like over-the-top action games, trading tension for explosions. The gameplay is fast, with an expanded melee system and co-op mechanics, but it sacrifices atmosphere and scares in the process.
Visually impressive and mechanically solid, but tonally inconsistent and bloated. Fun in bursts, especially in co-op, but far from the series’ best.

Suprisingly holds up well today, the in-game cutscenes are still beautiful, a really good flashy action game but not really resident evil style

Holy hell this game is bad. Absolute chaos, zero horror, bloated campaigns, and AI partner is so useless it actively makes the game worse. (won’t trigger some events)
Boss fights are trash, pacing is awful, and it doesn't even feel like Resident Evil at all.
Only play it if you hate yourself.

The only part of the main series that I avoided until 2025. And in the end I can't say that the game is definitely good or definitely bad. As a cooperative b-movie with a friend over beer, the game is good. As a plot or gameplay or horror-based survival horror, it's a mess. When you try to play it like a classic resident Evil, the game is buried by a huge number of game design mistakes and silly segments. In a sense, re6 can be considered a failed experiment, and it's good that they changed the formula for the next part.
I don't regret going through it 1 time, but I wouldn't play it again, unlike the other games in the series, which I enjoyed going through several times.

I personally have always loved this game, I just get to experience it on PC instead of Xbox now.

This is one of those games where I really wish Steam had a 'neutral' option, but they don't, so on balance I'm going to go with not recommended.
RE6 isn't an awful game, but I always find it deeply frustrating to play. At least in my experience the gun play is 'iffy', shots properly lined up in cross hairs often fail to connect even when the target is mere feet away. Inconsequential perhaps with the pistol, very frustrating when you waste magnum round after magnum round because the game randomly decides when in the crosshairs counts and when it doesn't.
There is no way I've been able to find to dodge sniper enemies, and it is often very difficult to find where they are actually shooting at you from, so get ready for the 'get sniped, get knocked down, get back up, try to quickly look around the map/move out of the snipers line of site only to get sniped again, and repeat. This is similar for enemies with rocket launchers, but those tend to be easier to find and pick off.
The quick time events are I guess very much of their time, but very unforgiving. At least RE5 gave you a setting to skip these. RE6 doesn't, or not that I've been able to find. There is one particularly egregious section with a snow mobile. I actually lost count of how many attempts it took me to get through this, but when I did it wasn't due to skill or reflexes, simply that each death told me which way I needed to direct the snow mobile to not die next time.
Unfortunately every campaign has these to differing degrees of annoyance!
The checkpoint system is unclear. You'll get a message saying checkpoint reached, quit the game to take a break and come back later only to find that you've lost a load of progress. I only realised later that checkpoints and save points are not the same thing, but this was never properly explained by the game.
If you can get this cheap when on sale and you are up for some split screen co-op with a friend as I said It's not awful, but be prepared to be frustrated by the game, especially as even in raid mode it is one of those 'if your partner dies you lose' style games. Grab it on sale, otherwise give it a miss.

The second worst Resident Evil game, but it's bearable to do a run of the story with a friend.

I don’t care what anyone says. This game is good and I enjoy it. I’ll admit that there really is effectively no horror, but in my opinion, it’s a fun action game.
also leon is hot
