I beat the game on the third attempt (just with bomb and saw ball, maybe the shield is OP). Even though I don't feel like I can control the balls to their full potential, it's enough to have fun because you can also just spam kick them around. I see there are more bosses available than you can encounter in one run, so there is some replay value (besides unlocking new stuff each run). Even though i didn't see everything yet, I feel like there should just a bit more enemies/biomes content-wise. With the current available content i would say the launch sale price is justified, if you like compact games with a well executed gameplay mechanic. It's a great game for Steam Deck. Small things i noticed: The first few levels take too long, i would advise to either spawn less enemies or spawn them faster. Maybe at least after the player beat the first boss, so the mechanics are known. It's possible to dodge the lasers of the Skullhead boss by just standing on the far left/right of the room. Feels a bit cheap ;) Small bug on the end boss (security eye): The hitbox of the middle platform disappeared after ~50% HP, so i couldn't stand on it anymore. If this is intentional the visual queue was missing. Small bug on the capsule machine: The 9th item i unlocked in a row couldn't be picked up anymore. I also couldn't use another coin anymore.

It could be a bit more challenging to provide long-term motivation, but it's definitely fun so far. It has lots of interesting builds, and the core gameplay loop is engaging and perfectly captures the "easy to learn, hard to master" feeling. If you like roguelites and 2D platformer movement, give this a try.

I can't recommend to buy this game full price in its current state. The idea is pretty nice, but the execution is lacking. The game received a few updates correcting some minor bugs (and adding a much needed option to see your inventory in the shop) in the first days after the release and since then has been forgotten by the devs. This is pretty sad because the game really needs at least a few QoL updates (inventory management is terrible in this game). The progression in this game is slow and unsatisfying. Shopping feels really bad: you only get a few random items to buy and can pay to reroll them, but the problem is that most of the time you are not given something that can be used to improve your current build. I've lost count of how many times I got into the shop, purchased nothing, and left with no money because I kept rerolling expecting to get at least something, but all the options did not work with my current build. Once you start unlocking more things this gets worse, because you have even more useless options to bloat the item pool. The inventory system is terribly designed. I like the idea of limiting items you are equipping for different characters with different stats, but limiting how much you can carry in your "backpack" in a game where you need to merge duplicate items to create a better version of them is straight-up bad (unless the space is at least big enough). Sometimes you get a low-level item that could be good for your build, but you end up not taking it because you are waiting for that one duplicate to show up so you can merge with the other one you are holding in your inventory just to create the stronger version of it that you need to merge with the one you are currently using. Then you learn you can use balls as a means of expanding your inventory (because you can place some upgrades inside them) and get frustrated with the bad controls and UI (especially if you are playing with a controller). If you ever need to exchange ball upgrades that are equipped into two different balls and your inventory is full, good luck! Oops, this can only be done for ball upgrades, so now you have to decide what to do with the characters upgrades (do you hold it waiting for an opportunity to upgrade it that may never come and drop something else, or do you skip it?) With some basic QoL updates, this game can become so much better. I didn't even talk about the gameplay itself, which is fine I guess. I would do some things regarding to ball control and aiming differently, but I guess the devs have played this game more and know what is best for more experienced players. Flying enemies are a pain in the ass and the bosses are either too basic or very annoying. The downside is that on top of it all, this is a very repetitive game, so you are always seeing the same enemies, bosses, rooms... If the game is on sale, it can be a good choice for a few hours of entertainment. But for a full price, I would wait until the devs give some attention to it.

What a fantastic game! I did not in anyway see this one coming or being so fun. Will add to my review later (for the most part, what you see is what you get, but way more fun), but for now, devs: 1) Give gold for destroying items! 2) Please let me rebind controls! 3) Place a shop after each boss, please! 4) Give some indicator as to how each character is unlocked? Excellent work so far! Friends, if I know one thing it’s kicking with a bionic leg. And if I know *two* things, it’s kicking a saw with a bionic leg into a giant worm and then setting it on fire (the worm, not the bionic leg or saw). Have a good one.

Incredibly interesting game mechanic. So far I have only unlocked a fraction of the characters and items I can see in the trailer, yet the vast combinations are already a lot of fun! It's great to play methodically, but also very satisfying to just go haywire shooting the balls around. I imagine I'll play this for quite some time.

The first runs were hard and I thought of refund. But after I learned how to control the ball and stopped kicking it around it became fun. At least for a while. I can't see myself putting dozens of hours into Footgun: Underground, but it's a nice game to kill some time once in a while.

The Game is super Cool. The Bosses are challenging but doable and once you get the Grip on Ball... management you can concentrate more on dodging and Combos and feel like you are actually getting better. Standard balls for the win tho.

A unique roguelike with a very interesting combat mechanic! The concept stays pretty fresh throughout the game, and it is satisfying to get good at the mechanic. Unfortunately, the upgrade slots you receive are very limited, and I didn't see a lot of synergy between them, so the runs might get stale pretty quickly if you don't try out new ball types. There is also no story whatsoever, so it's all purely about the gameplay. Keep that in mind if you wanna try this game out!

The Good -The skill curve feels perfect. You start off kicking a basic ball randomly and as you get better at the game sniping an enemy from across the room becomes second nature and extremely satisfying. -The starting balls and upgrades are lack luster, but after you start beating bosses and unlocking characters and upgrades the game starts feeling even better than it already was. Every time I beat a boss I was so excited to do a run with my new character and every time I unlocked an upgrade I couldn't wait for it to drop. Unlike so many roguelikes Footgun kept me motivated to keep unlocking and keep getting better. -Every design aspect is unique, from characters to balls to enemies to bosses I've never seen a game sets itself apart so far apart from other games simply by being so unique and creative in its mechanics. I could go on and on about how no charter/ball/upgrade feels even somewhat similar but I think that would make this review even longer than it already is. -The art is good, I'm not an art person so expressing exactly how I feel would be difficult but the art is worth mentioning as one of the strong points. The Bad (QOL) -Not being able to rebind keys is not something big, but comes standard with pretty much every modern game. This is especially painful because the M+K controls aren't great on the mouse side (although even if it were the controller is better IMO). -The inventory feels clunky to navigate through, I'm not a UI designer so I couldn't really give any other input on this other than gut feeling. -The game relies on getting repeats of upgrades in order to make them better, so when I visit the shop and can't see if I have something already or if my inventory will be full, it's not fun. -The runs feel infinite in a bad way, you'll get repeats of themes and even bosses with no floor/stage count and nothing to make you think there even is an end. I would guess this is temporary but as it stands not the best. The Bad (gameplay) -The wall can(n)on ball is a slog to play with, I get what the point of it is, but the risk vs. reward is not balanced. -There is no "this will hurt you" color, it's not as bad as it is now but when I started playing I would get hit by contact damage, random stuff on the ground I could hardly see, stuff I thought were my balls flying back at me. etc. because you have to focus on the whole screen at once. -The identity ball can't damage the big ol' head guy pretty much at all (I think it might be able to but the difficulty to do so is so much harder than any other part of the game it's crazy). I can't express into words how good this game feels to play, unfortunately I can express how bad some of the minor features feel when I use them. I imagine most of the small issues could be fixed with some small patches but I'm no game dev and don't know how difficult it would be, I'm not going to expect anything crazy. This review will be at least slightly out of date in the future so take everything with a grain of salt. With everything said this game gets a solid 7/10 with 9/10 potential if it keeps getting updates.

Ball jokes aside, this game has fantastic game design. The core mechanics and upgrades synergize incredibly well with the environmental hazards of each biome.
