Rocket escape was a really fun short game with some challenging puzzles, cool platforming mechanics, and fun Easter eggs. There was a lot of detail put into the game and I found no holes within everything that the game presented, making it clear that the developers put a lot of work and effort into their project. Would recommend as a short play for people who like platform games.

Terrible, terrible execution of an otherwise good concept. I thought sure, the game looks very shoddy but the gameplay would be worth it? Nope, it's just as awful as it looks.
So here I am trying to rocketjump vertically along a wall. I jump up and fire a rocket. Observe where the rocket actually spawns when I fire it. Wayyy off the rocket launcher! Now watch where the rocket explodes upon "contact". Wayyy off any actual surface! What the hell? It is INCREDIBLY inconsistent and annoying, and it kills any potential skill ceiling or just fun in this game.
Even worse! Let's simply fire a rocket down at our feet. How wrong could that go? Well, observe where such explosion occurs exactly. ABOVE our feet. Which means that simply firing a rocket downward results in zero vertical momentum! In fact, even if you jump and fire too early your character can still ignore the explosion completely - even with your feet not touching the ground! How could this possibly be okay?
It's only gets worse and worse from here:
- Level timer just keeps going when you fail and restart a level
- Crosshair is barely visible and isn't locked to the screen space
- 100% aircontrol: no matter how fast you're moving you can instantly stop by moving to the other direction
- Firing rockets under the trampolines is buggy as hell
- All menus look horrible, it's like a child made them
Here's a video of me struggling with the controls for a minute. It's hard to convey through a video but still, can you count how many times I did not get pushed back by a rocket explosion the way you'd expect it to? And this is coming from someone who's played Quake bhop/rjump maps for a long time.
Verdict: FUNDAMENTALLY broken, unplayable mess that is not worth any money.
UPD (April 2023): some of these issues - but far from all of them - have been either fixed or reduced. I gave the game another chance and while I respect the steps taken in the right direction I still dislike it as much as I did the first time. I've advanced about a dozen levels - which are all extremely short, a proper 1-2 rocket boost from the spawn often takes you straight into the exit.
But how to beat level C2-12 I have no idea at all; no clue how you're supposed not to fall through the floor from the spawn. But what bothers me more is the fact that the rocket you fire downwards may explode either above or below the blue forcefield. I assume it's because the developer didn't set up the Unity collider on the rockets to be Continuous rather than Discrete - so where exactly your rockets explode is up to the engine to pick at random. At its very core the game is just poorly executed, and the UI Is still making my eyes bleed. The negative review stays for sure.

Rocket Escape is a game that takes a lot from Portal.
It's short, it's fun, and it's not something that's really been done before.
For just a few bucks, I'd say it's a great buy.

This is a great game for the cost, even though it is short, it is a really fun game that you can't stop until you've finished. The amount of satisfaction you get from absolutely nailing the rocket timing is limitless every time I do it. My satisfaction is immeasurable and my day is mended.
