Is there any edge of the map that is far enough away that one can find freedom? This is the central question of the game, Herald, named after the merchant ship that is the staging of the majority of the story. The story unfolds through point-and-click exploration and dialogue choices whose consequences ripple into the future. Mixed feelings on this one. You find yourself in an alternate history where you are faced with the biases and assumptions of the late nineteenth century. The game concerns the story of a voyage between Europe and the colonies. You eventually learn that there are a numbers of secrets on the ship. The question that you face is, how will you react once these secrets come to light? The stakes seem low at first, but they become higher as the story progresses. Eventually, characters can even die depending on your decisions. There are some nagging problems with the game play. Scenes drag and characters are sometimes very slow to react. My biggest problem is that near the end of the game you face a rush of decisions that will have a major impact in determining the ending that you receive. The problem is that the explanations and clues as to the effect that your decisions will have become incredibly unclear. It's very easy to trigger an unintended outcome. Furthermore, if there's a way to go back and try a different result, I didn't find it. As a result, I can't recommend this.

I did not have the time to play the complete edition yet but I have played the first two books back in 2017 and loved them. I'm so glad that the team persevered and managed to finish this brave tale. We need more developers that dare to tell stories about the issues of the real world. Gonna update this once I find the time to dive back in.

Eh, fairly mediocre overall, I got to book 3 and then didn't feel the need to continue. It is an interesting concept, that feels like it lacks in execution. Like a series of mini events chained together rather than a slow burn settling in story and some of the choices feel restrictive in how I can respond to events as they unfold. I guess there's something for choose your own adventure fans in here, but it simply didn't click for me at all, it felt like it lacked the right sort of pacing; for example, events constantly chain to push you along the narrative rather than giving you a minute to breathe, so much so, I genuinely wasn't that fussed about character deaths because I barely knew them to really care that much beyond 'oh well, anyway...' Overall, not for me, unfortunately.

Herald is a pretty decent choices game, yet the ending(s) are cut rather short. 8/10.

If you like storydriven games with strong characters and a meaningful theme, this is your game. I absolute adore the 2D character portraits and the story. Controls can be a bit clunky sometimes but don't worry about it, this is a relaxing game where you don't need to have quick reflexes. Definitely get this if you like history and are interested in 2 cultures clashing.
