Automaton Lung is like exploring ruins. There are no audio logs or writings, and most artefacts which mean anything are either buried or have been carried off by others long ago. Unlike real-life ruins, there are some robots wandering around who probably have something to do with the location's past, but they're all mute and either hostile or indifferent to your presence, so they aren't of much help either.
Thus you wander. You wander around at varying speeds and wonder at it all, sometimes getting some sense of what a building was for and other times not. Sometimes you'll pick up little silicon chips, rarely you'll find a weapon. Collect enough of these chips and you will unlock an ending, although if you expect something that'll wrap everything up with an easy explanation, you'll be sorely disappointed. Also like real ruins, if you spend too much time in them, you'll eventually tire of it and leave.
But was it a waste of time? For some people, maybe. But for others, no. These things have a way of lingering in your memory, where they feed your imagination and sometimes come to mind again in unexpected ways. You could make a case that it's a bit overpriced when it isn't on sale, and I'd agree with you, but if it is on sale, and if it strikes you as something you'd enjoy, I'd suggest trying it.

If I'm completely honest, I don't really understand what I just played beyond "a chip collecting platformer". But I sure had a great time playing it.
