Let me start be saying that I enjoyed playing through this game and I believe I got my money out of it ($4). Positives: The game plays a lot like Diablo but not as smooth or refined. The gameplay is pretty simple: kill enemies, enemies drop loot and experience points, use loot and level up to kill stronger enemies. The games story is strange but serviceable. The greatest aspect of this game is that it there are a number of different builds you can use to replay the game. However, most of these builds are locked behind DLCs. Negatives: I bought this game for $4 on sale with all the DLCs included and I would not recommend anyone pay more that that due to the games drawbacks. For one, the game is pretty short with around 25 mission areas (one for each main story mission). Most of these areas are small and take 15-20 minutes to play through. There are also very few side missions (maybe 12 altogether). There is a new game plus feature but it is not implemented very well because the enemies will continue to get stronger but the player will reach the max level in the first playthrough, this takes away the whole gameplay loop and makes the new game plus mode boring. Another drawback is about half way through the game you see all the game has to offer in terms of enemy variety. Third, during my playthrough the game had three hard crashes, one completely froze my desktop requiring me to restart it. Lastly, (this may not be a concern for most) some of the achievements are broken and others are unattainable unless you use bugs/cheats. For example, there is an achievement to kill 500,000 enemies. However, you can only kill around 11,000 per playthrough, meaning you would have to replay the game 46 times. Furthermore, each playthrough is around 20-25 hours long, meaning you would have to play the game for around 910 hours or 38 days. Even if you were to play every build the game had to offer you would still be nowhere close to achieving this achievement. Conclusion: If you can look past the drawbacks, get the game on sale, and enjoy a cheap Diablo style game driven by loot you might enjoy playing the game but again don't buy it for full price.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing, developed by NeocoreGames and released on Steam in 2013, is an action role-playing game that blends gothic noir with steampunk aesthetics, drawing inspiration from classic monster-hunting tales while carving out its own unique identity. Set in the fictional land of Borgovia—a place where dark magic, science gone awry, and supernatural chaos collide—the game casts players as the son of the legendary vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing. With its mixture of fast-paced combat, atmospheric world-building, and witty dialogue, the game offers a compelling experience for fans of the ARPG genre. The game’s central hook lies in its setting. Borgovia is a richly imagined world that combines 19th-century European folklore with mad science, gothic horror, and hints of industrial fantasy. This world is teeming with werewolves, ghosts, vampires, rogue automatons, and deranged scientists, and it offers a fresh take on traditional monster-hunting themes. The environments are varied and richly detailed, ranging from misty forests and crumbling villages to haunted laboratories and eerie crypts. Every zone feels distinct, and the art direction supports the game’s mood brilliantly, creating an atmosphere that’s both grim and whimsical. Combat in Van Helsing is fast, fluid, and highly customizable. Players can switch seamlessly between melee and ranged weapons, combining swordplay, firearms, and magical abilities to tackle the game's many enemies. The skill tree system is expansive, with a variety of active and passive abilities that allow for flexible character builds, from a close-combat warrior to a spellcasting trickster or a ranged specialist. Each skill can be modified with “power-ups” that tweak its behavior or increase its potency, adding another layer of strategy. The game also incorporates a rage mechanic, allowing players to enhance abilities with a limited-use resource, encouraging timing and tactical use of skills. One of the game’s standout features is Lady Katarina, Van Helsing’s ghostly companion. Far more than just a sidekick, Katarina has her own gear, AI behavior settings, skill tree, and inventory. She can act as a tank, ranged attacker, or support unit depending on how she’s configured. Her witty banter with Van Helsing injects levity into the dark tone of the game, and their dynamic relationship is one of the game’s most charming aspects. Katarina also provides utility, such as looting items during combat or traveling to town to sell junk—features that reduce downtime and keep the pace brisk. The loot system follows the typical ARPG formula of randomized gear drops, rare equipment, and stat-focused progression. There is a satisfying variety of weapons, armor, trinkets, and unique items to discover, though inventory management can become a bit cumbersome due to the volume of loot. Crafting and enchanting systems allow for further customization, letting players tailor their gear to suit specific builds. While the loot isn’t as flashy or over-the-top as in some genre heavyweights, it’s effective and supports the game’s sense of progression well. Narratively, The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing does a commendable job of blending serious themes with humor. The main story—centered around defending Borgovia from monstrous threats and unraveling a plot involving rogue science and political unrest—is engaging, if occasionally conventional. What sets it apart is the sharp, self-aware writing. The game frequently pokes fun at RPG tropes, includes genre-savvy jokes, and breaks the fourth wall in amusing ways. This tone helps keep the story entertaining without undermining the darker elements of the setting. Visually, the game holds up well thanks to its strong art direction. While not cutting-edge in terms of graphical fidelity, the environments are detailed and atmospheric, with dynamic lighting, particle effects, and well-designed enemy models. Sound design complements the visuals nicely, with appropriately dramatic music, eerie ambient effects, and solid voice acting—particularly in the exchanges between Van Helsing and Katarina, which are a constant highlight. The game offers a solid amount of content, with a main campaign that lasts around 12–15 hours, depending on the level of exploration and side quest completion. There are also additional game modes such as scenario missions and a tower defense-style minigame that adds variety and replayability. For those who enjoy refining builds or chasing achievements, there’s enough depth to support multiple playthroughs. Despite its strengths, the game isn’t without flaws. Enemy AI can occasionally behave erratically, and pathfinding issues—especially for Katarina—may pop up during complex encounters. Some difficulty spikes can feel abrupt, particularly on higher difficulties where enemy swarms can overwhelm players who haven’t optimized their build or gear. The UI, while functional, could benefit from more polish, particularly in inventory and skill management screens. In conclusion, The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing is a well-crafted and thoroughly entertaining action RPG that stands out with its distinctive setting, witty writing, and satisfying gameplay. While it doesn’t reinvent the genre, it executes its ideas with style and charm, offering a refreshing alternative to the more grim and serious tone of its contemporaries. With deep customization, responsive combat, and a memorable companion system, it provides a rewarding experience for anyone seeking a monster-filled adventure that balances action, strategy, and humor in equal measure. There were mixed feelings while playing this game. It feels clunky ungainly to control the character. Furthermore, there is no diversification to fighting system. All it feels the same. Soundtrack is wasted on me and I didn't manage to appraise it so far

A very fun Diablo-style dungeon crawler that kept my interest a lot more than the modern Diablo games.

There is surprisingly funny writing in this game. Furthermore it is very addictive to start a new hardcore character on the highest difficulty and to try to play trough all of the three games.

So far the story component seems engaging and there appears to be meaningful choices. The action elements are... severely lacking. Wish there was a MEH checkbox between recommend yes or no.

Initially, I thought the game was decent, if nothing special, but after playing a couple more hours, the balance issues get so bad the game is pretty much unplayable slog.
