Character level is capped at Lvl 15 (just enough to unlock one (1) out of four perk branches). In most games, this would be fine, but in this one, the perks are completely unimpactful. Here's a sample: * Dash cooldown reduced by 5% * Max ammo increased by 8 * Pickups last 1 second longer These aren't exciting choices. They're just minor stat tweaks. So limiting character level (and by extension, perk points) serves no real purpose, except to annoy the player and artificially gate progression. To make matters worse, the game has an anti-save-editing system. That alone tells you how worried they are that people might skip the grind, realize there’s not much there, and stop playing. I want games to be fun because the gameplay is fun, not because I'm trying to unlock all the characters or reach max level. I played this game a LOT when it was still Gaunt Valkyr. It feels ever so slightly worse than it was before. I don't think this game is bad or anything, but I just want my time playing to feel impactful. Gaunt Valkyr didn't even have a save system, and no progress carried over between runs, but I'd rather play a good roguelike than a bad roguelite.

This early access game is well on it's way o becoming the new enter the gungeon / nuclear throne replacement. It plays very well on Steam Deck, and has plenty of replayability and character. My only complaint is some balance issues when getting into boss fights. Perhaps slowing down boss movements would help as it's easy to get pinned in parts of the maps (Or bigger boss maps). Definitely worth the asking price.
