LEGO® The Lord of the Rings™ offers a unique blend of beloved Middle-earth storytelling and the trademark humor and charm of LEGO games, all wrapped into a vast, open-world experience. Unlike previous LEGO titles that follow a strictly linear progression, this game invites players to explore a connected version of Middle-earth, from the peaceful Shire to the ominous lands of Mordor. The freedom to roam between locations, uncover hidden secrets, and engage with numerous side quests creates a sense of scale rarely seen in LEGO games. This ambitious design gives players more agency in how they experience the story, making exploration as rewarding as the main narrative. The game faithfully recreates the key moments from The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King through 18 story levels, each packed with puzzles, combat, and platforming challenges. The iconic dialogue from the films is cleverly delivered by LEGO characters, striking a balance between the original epic tone and the playful, lighthearted feel typical of LEGO adaptations. Character switching is essential, as each hero offers unique abilities needed to solve environmental puzzles and progress through levels. Whether it’s Legolas creating arrow bridges or Gimli breaking obstacles, these mechanics encourage creative problem-solving and variety in gameplay. An engaging progression system adds depth to the experience. Collecting Mithril bricks and blueprints allows players to craft special items and tools at the blacksmith in Bree. This means you can customize your roster by giving characters abilities or gear usually exclusive to others, simplifying exploration and combat during free-play sections. This layer of customization adds meaningful strategy and a sense of ownership over your journey through Middle-earth. The co-op mode is a highlight, letting two players explore the open world simultaneously, working on different objectives or teaming up for battles. The drop-in, drop-out feature makes cooperative play seamless and enjoyable, allowing friends to share the survival challenges and puzzles together. However, the lack of online multiplayer is a noticeable downside, especially considering the game’s emphasis on exploration and teamwork. While the world is impressively large, some players find parts of Middle-earth to feel sparse, which can lead to long stretches of travel without much happening. This, combined with some repetitive boss fights and mission objectives, can sometimes detract from the pacing. Additionally, certain platforming sections are occasionally clunky, and the camera can struggle with tight spaces, leading to frustrating moments during precision jumps. Visually, the game nails the look and atmosphere of Tolkien’s world with clean, colorful LEGO art design that complements the settings perfectly. The musical score, inspired by Howard Shore’s iconic compositions, elevates the overall experience, turning simple journeys into epic moments that evoke the grandeur of the films. Ambient sounds and detailed environments enhance immersion without overwhelming the player. In all, LEGO® The Lord of the Rings™ stands out as one of the most ambitious LEGO titles to date. It successfully combines the epic story of Tolkien’s trilogy with playful LEGO charm, a sprawling world to explore, and thoughtful gameplay mechanics. Though it has its rough edges in controls and pacing, the game offers a heartfelt and enjoyable experience for fans of both LEGO and the Lord of the Rings universe. Rating: 9/10

It took me 3 years of playing on and off to 100% this one. Lego LOTR is a classic Lego video game that I enjoyed. I think it tends to drag a bit in some places, but I had a lot of fun with the ensemble of characters and abilities. I liked the mithril item addition and throwing dwarf characters is a funny addition. I would recommend this game to anyone who already enjoys Lego games. I do have to warn new players that some of the achievements can be buggy at times and I got stuck in a few levels where my character disappeared into the void. Even with these setbacks, the game is still playable and I found it quite enjoyable :)

If you like LEGO games and LOTR then this is worth a play, but it's a really crappy port from consoles with frustrating game breaking bugs. Having said that, I was able to play through the whole story and I will probably play more to unlock more stuff, but this is definitely not one of the better implemented LEGO games. For me the gold standard is still LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga.

I really enjoyed my time spent on the game and it made me wanna rewatch the movies again!! Sadly IT IS a really bad port of the Original Game. It is buggy and often soft-lock. When you can save, save asp! If the devs were to fixes tthose bugs, the game would be really one of the best Lego games

I absolutely love LOTR, so I cant believe it took me this long to play the Lego game for it and The Hobbit, although Ive steered away from Lego The Hobbit because it is permanently unfinished. Even so, they both still play beautifully. I can also confirm despite being "Unsupported", Lego LOTR and The Hobbit run great on Steam Deck. Now if only we could get Conquest, The Third Age, etc...

Amazing Lego game, one of my favorites from my childhood and a joy to 100% again. Although there was some buggy glitches, it doesn't take you out of this amazing experience.

When I made my Steam account in the summer of 2012, I played a lot of free and cheap games, but this was the 1st full priced game I got! <3 while I also platinumed it on PS3, getting back to this game is great! <3 the music is also fantastic! And the lego humor is there too! Highly Recommended!
