Bomber 3 Reviews
Put yourself in the captain’s seat of a B-17 bomber, select your plane, select your crew and plot your path over war-torn Europe. Watch your elevation, watch your formation, and watch very carefully when you are over the target. This classic was a bestseller in the early 1990s.

This old game is wonderful, read the instructions on how to play and its a great experience - alot of nice little details in there. Sure its old graphics, but they look great and the audio is amazing. Quite a challenge too - you really have to pay attention to get the bombing run right and also manage the effects of damage like fuel leaks from flak etc
my only wonder is whether it is all running a bit too fast as the opportunity to actually fire the guns on enemy fights flashes by very quickly

I feel like this modern port has some little bugs and other weird glitches the original I played when I was young did not, but overall... Yeah, this is Bomber 3!
Now my girlfriend can finally experience for herself the reason I always say 'Flak ahead, pilot' when something is about to go wrong X'D
And THAT... is *priceless*.
UPDATE, 9/12/24:
After spending more time with it, I can say quite conclusively that this is NOT the game it was on Mac back in the day. Microprose (or at least this modern version of the company) did... a rather slipshod job porting it, quite honestly - Sound problems galore, I couldn't plot my own route to a target once I reached the rank of Major (could REALLY use that!), kills don't get counted to the right gunners (if at all), and even more issues I can't remember off the top of my head.
This game is a cherished childhood memory, and although just having access to this game again in SOME form is welcome, I admit, the bugs *they introduced* when they ported it to more modern machines are not, nor is the apparent complete lack of interest by Microprose in fixing any more of the outstanding bugs. I guess one patch is all we get... *shrug*
I guess the bottom line is that this is another game that's at least worth it on sale, but... just don't expect a bunch. Don't even expect something that truly lives up to the game it was literally ported DIRECTLY from, apparently -_-
You had a great foundation, Microprose, but concerning your 'follow-through', all I have left to say is:
'You blew it, Skipper.'

Want to love this, but it's a mess.
I played the original back in the day, so learning the controls and everything wasn't a problem for me, but there's little in the way of instructions and it's not particularly intuitive if you don't already know what you're doing.
The issue is that a lot of stuff just doesn't work. There are broken audio files (gunners repeat their incoming fighter reports on a loop until you jump screens, bombing audio hangs frequently, bearings from the command pilot don't come through all the way), bugs with functions (fighter kills seem hit or miss and don't track on your log book, damage doesn't accumulate consistently, especially from enemy fighters, gunners sometimes auto-fire when you jump to their position), and -- most significantly -- when you hit 25 missions, you just start over with a new crew and blank log book.
Fun for nostalgia, but the issues make playthrough (and especially replay) pretty rough.

I never thought I'd get to play this game again, as I had the original back in the day. Great to be able to run it on modern machines. It's still as good today as it was back then. This got me into the B17 series later on when they were released. I know some people don't like the look and feel of this game, but this is what we had back then, and the gameplay still holds up now. Good job Microprose!

Bomber 3 is more of a role playing game/simulation than anything else. The sound design is excellent and creates a real sense of immersion even though the graphics are dated. I played this a lot in the 90s - along with other Deadly Games classics like U-Boat and M4 - and I was thrilled to have a chance to play it again on a modern computer.
I suspect it may be pretty hard for new players to get into, but I recommend giving it a try anyway. Well worth it once you get over the initial learning curve.
Unfortunately, this version is full of bugs that weren't in the original. To name a few:
- Your character is listed as a Captain in the log book at the start of the game when they should be a Lieutenant. The correct rank insignia is in the upper left corner of the screen and you are referred to as a Lieutenant elsewhere.
- When a gunner shoots down a fighter it shows the correct animation but doesn't record the kill in the log book.
- The bomb sight occasionally freezes, making it impossible to continue.
- There are a variety of sound glitches, such as one where the sound of the bomb bay doors closing plays over and over until (for some reason) the throttle is pushed to full speed.
Hoping the team that ported this will spend a little more time polishing it!

This is the same Bomber III that was released in 1989 for the Macintosh. The graphics are the same. The controls are the same. It is simply updated to run on current hardware.
If you like the game then, it can be fun to play it again after 35 years. If you are looking for a game that is up to current standards, this is not it.
As for me, I very much liked this game back in the day. It is almost an implementation of a board game in what was then Hypercard format. It is fun to play it again after all these years and still really hard to get through an entire tour.

As others have stated this is a very old title from the early day of simulation also its more of an adventure strategy title rather than a true flight sim saying that it offers a glimpse into early games and what programmers managed to do with the tech of the day.
The game was originally a Mac title released in the early 1990's by Deadly games who also did and M4 Sherman 'sim', a battle of Britain game and 2 UBoat games in the same style. These games were renowned for the quality of thier speech back in the day which added to the games's atmosphere.
In this entirely faithful re-release In the re-release Microprose have kept the original style of graphics and sounds and ported the game over to run on today's PCs
The controls have been posted by the devs in a steam news blog. The game is entirely mouse driven and you are mainly in the cockpit and navigator stations with the gunnery & bombardier stations becoming active when fighters are within range etc.
Overall this is a tribute release and should be treated as such and not judged against modern titles, its nice to dip into these old classics occasionally to step back to an earlier era of gaming to experience some of the first mil-sims, Thanks Microprose for the re-release.

I don't get the hate from people. The game works as intended. Its a game that came out in the early 90's and people are expecting some kind of DCS like quality. It's a nostalgia like game. Don't expect high end graphics and depth. The game was originally on a floppy disk. Now is it fun? Personally to me it is. Its not a flight sim but more of a management type game if thats the words to use. I would recommend it if you like playing retro games.

When Microprose stated they were coming out with 3 new B-17, I, along with everyone else, got VERY excited. I'm from the Old school so I remember way back when Microprose put out really GOOD Simulation games. Heck, I have spent HOURS and DAYS on B-17 back then. So I added Bomber 3 to my wish list and like everyone, I waited. And waited and waited. So when it was FINALLY released today, I immediately and downloaded it. You have to be a fan of the B-17 games from way back when because the graphics in this game are from that time and will do your head head compared to today's graphics. The frame rate is a bit too slow for my tastes and if you've never played a B-17 game before, there is no Tutorial so good luck figuring out where to click or what to do. Not there's much. I'm hoping the next two B-17 games, B-17 The mighy 8 Redux and the Bloody 100th will be FAR better then this one. It's like Microprose didn't put ANY effort into updating it, they just released it. All this waiting...for that/ Shame on Microprose.

Difficult to recommend this unless you have some real love for the original release. This is that same game and yes it works on a modern system but that is about all you can say.
