Gorgeous game. Stunning. I suck at the combat but I love the city building. I beat the game years ago and wanted to try it again. The improvements are quick to notice. To be honest I dont really understand the castle stuff but the economy and market are really fun. Highly recommended. I play a lot of rts and still come back to this one.

The game's campaign is lots of fun, and I played the original. I EXPECTED them to fix the issues in the game.
Nope! Somehow on a modern engine they copied the game nearly 100%, issues and all.
Save your money. You won't find this out until you're WELL past the refund time on steam.

Though the style, graphics and game mechanics are very refreshing and enjoyable to anyone fond of city-builders, a few small functions cause this game to miss the mark.
No skirmish mode, no mod support (in which the community does all the work for you to sell your game for free), no over-arcing progression system, and enabling 'random events' will cause a large chunk of your castle to spontaneously catch fire every now and then, and wells which are in the game specifically for fires, serve little to no function.
This leaves the game feeling strong in some areas but weak as an overall product if you're considering buying.
The campaigns are indeed very fun but that's about as far as it goes. A lot of potential to make an amazing game here, so it's worth keeping an eye on, in case the devs start listening to feedback!

No Skirmish mode
No AI opponents can be added to Multiplayer matches
Either you only play campaigns/missions
or you have to hope there are players in the Multiplayer lobby for PVP (there are none)
You dropped the ball FireFly.

I have never played the game before this edition of it, so I am reviewing this without nostalgic bias. Overall the game is really fun, relatively simple mechanics to understand at first and the main campaign does a really good job introducing you to different structures and units. The core of the game is building your castle and defending from waves of enemy units. If you enjoy RTS or tower defense you will most likely enjoy this since the gameplay leans heavily on the economy building side.

+ if you care about multiplayer, it has multiplayer. I have not tested it though
- ads, each time you open the game you see ads
- the new campaign it's actually half of campaign and half is sold separately as DLC
- some graphical glitches. for example, the minimap is pixeled. the main menu looks bad
- there is a yellow tint over everything now
- some strange animations. for example, now the peasants are bend over all the time around the fire. wtf?
I will stick to the original Stronghold + mods.

So much nostalgia. Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader were the gaming cornerstones of my childhood! Anyone who likes strategy games but hasn't played it yet I highly recommend it, these games charm is unmatched, played it in 2000s and I was spending hours just making most unpenetrable castles for absolutely no reason but fun, never got into other Stronghold games but this and the Crusader are my absolute favorite to this day.
Looking forward to Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition.
