This game rules. Funny and touching story with a meaty central match-3 mechanic that is just the right level of busted. Feels of the moment in a way that most games don't. Highly recommended.

CRDM3 is more than just a silly match 3 game, although it is still a silly match 3 game. There's an earnest tale in here about the state of modern game development and just how hard it is to get anything completed and published. I look forward to whatever Strange Scaffold comes up with next, I'm sure it'll be something you or I would ever think of.

I really enjoyed this game! Admittedly, I got this game for the bit, but luckily this game is filled with many, many bits. The bits are just the beginning though: I found myself genuinely charmed by the plot, having fun with the match-3 mechanics, and returning to previous story markers just to see where the other paths lead. The game's ending made it worth playing to the end. The sexy dinosaurs are just the sexy, sexy cherry on top.

Was expecting some kind of shitpost game but it turned out to be so wacky and meta that it kept itself interesting all around, plus it left a really nice message by the end about game development in general, which is a running theme throughout the story. The match-3 gameplay also does a lot to keep the game fun with a couple of mechanics that shake up the formula. Had a great time with it.

I would never have thought you could combine Metroidvania action with match-3 puzzles and a kickin' ominous-polka soundtrack, but here we are- this game makes it all work. The amount of TENSION I felt trying to get the perfect combo of items and actions on some of these boss fights!!! The closer I got to the ending and the unraveling of the game's backstory (both factual and fictional), the more verklempt it all made me too- this is a very, very, very silly game and it is incredibly obvious how much fun the team had with that silliness, but it's also a heartfelt exploration of the pains, frustrations, and joys of game development as a career and artistic passion. I WOULD TAKE JJ OVER JACK BRIAR ANY DAY 3
Special shout-out to the background art- it is all EXTREMELY cute and such a unique style that ties the sprites and UI together, and really sets the silly-spooky mood, and I loved trying to spot all the tiny little details the artist threw in to each piece of artwork, especially in the kitchen!

Creepy Redneck Dinosaur Mansion 3 exists with a combination of game genres that doomed me to be within the target audience, and I do not regret a single dollar that was spent on this wonderfully unique experience.
Story recognition/spoilers follow:
This game, by it's own admission, should not exist. The meta-narrative of its own development hell being woven into the game is sad, funny, and engrossing enough that I ended up binging the 2nd half of it in one session. This game is unironically art that has been transformed by the medium and industry it exists in, for better or worse, and I have nothing but respect for all those who managed to make it happen. CRDM3 is a treat. I don't gravitate to Match-3 often, but what carried me through the game was the excellent comedy and commentary on what makes a video game, and what devs often must sacrifice to push their game to ship. I'd recommend this to most anyone that enjoys a more easy-going game.
In the last few years, Strange Scaffold has become a development team that I keep my eyes on. They're a clever bunch and I hope more people see how creative they are.

Creepy Redneck Dinosaur Mansion 3 is a heartfelt story about game development. It is also a Match-3 game. And a visual novel. And a horror game.
The protagonist, J.J. Hardwell (the name and personality are hard-coded and not customisable), former Postal Inspection Service agent and the newest agent of the ATS, is on his first mission to investigate the mansion of a suspected super-scientist, Duncan Dockright III.
Generally, the game is well-written and technically well-made, with the diverse dialogue options, victory conditions, and “battles” (not all matches are battles), the trait system based on the story branches completed, and the quality-of-life features, such as the fast-skip function and highlighting the previously-chosen options (which may have other branches behind them).
There are a few issues, most notably, the UI for the Match-3 sections seems to be controller-focused and rather uncomfortable, which is odd, considering how smooth and responsive it was in the demo. The skip function does not work for some animations and, as mentioned, the highlight does not take the post-option branching into account. The few keys that are used are not possible to rebind. While it is possible to replay from any unlocked checkpoint (usually every 1-2 matches), the game uses auto-saving into a single slot, so Windows Explorer is the only option for save file management. It is not unusual, but nonetheless disappointing.
The graphics, music, and animations are expressive and fitting and the game is VA-free.

CRDM3 is a video game meant for video game sickos. Not for people who occasionally dabble in the medium here and there, not for people who just buy the newest yearly sports games or multiplayer FPSes, and especially not for the Gamers™. It is for people who genuinely love video games as an art form & avenue of creative expression. It's for people who see the word salad that is "match-3 survival horror comedy RPG metroidvania" and lean in with curious interest rather than recoil in confused disgust. It's for people who don't confine their libraries to the narrow boundaries of what they think is "good" or "fun" and allow themselves to take risks on games that look even slightly interesting or cool. And most of all, it's for people who genuinely appreciate the hard-working guys and gals behind the curtain making the games they play, and don't abstract their work away into something they take for granted.
Am I being preachy & gatekeep-y about a $20 indie game? Probably, but with something that is both very niche and very me-pilled, I think I'm entitled to a little grandstanding.
