This game is great if you enjoy playing the old 2D Zelda games. It brings many aspects from those games and then adds its own. If you or someone you know is looking for a good game with puzzles, exploration, and a top down Zelda feel, this is the game to get.

Beyond the Mountains is a lovely top-down adventure game reminiscent of the GameBoy Color classic, Zelda: Link's Awakening DX. Although it isn't a very long game to go from start to finish with only 4 dungeons, it's a charming experience that the developer, VerdLife Games (Eric) clearly cares about and has put a lot of passion and love into. The world, art, story, and even the game engine itself was hand-crafted by him (and I assume a couple friends, based on the credits) to create a fun and unique experience that's both familiar to Zelda fans, but with some fun twists too. When I first purchased the game it had a couple rough edges, like most indie games do. Play testing is hard, and--as any software developer knows--users will do things in ways you couldn't even begin to imagine, breaking everything and encountering strange and weird quirks. Within a day, the next patch came out and Eric had polished up and fixed the things that were pointed out by myself and other players. He's done an excellent job engaging with the community and supporting Beyond the Mountains post-release, and I have no doubt that he will continue doing so.
TL;DR:
It's a wonderful homage to The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, and while it doesn't feel exactly like a Zelda game and is a fair bit shorter than Link's Awakening, was a fun experience in its own rights. The developer very clearly cares about his game, and has been very open with community feedback and post-release support. Even if you don't like top-down adventure games or don't intend on playing Beyond the Mountains, I strongly encourage you to pick up the game anyways just to support Eric/VerdLife Games. For the price of one and a half cups of coffee, he deserves the recognition and support for being such an excellent example of a developer who genuinely cares about his game and those who play it.
