Risk of Rain 2, but infinitely better in all possible ways.

Gatekeeper is, in many ways, an isometric version of Risk of Rain 2. It combines fast paced roguelite action with stylish visuals, unique character builds, and a satisfying difficulty curve that ramps up without ever feeling unfair. One of the first things that stood out to me is the art style. It is sharp, colorful, and fits the sci fi setting perfectly. Performance has also been solid throughout. I did not run into any noticeable bugs or frame drops during my time with it. The settings menu is somewhere in the middle. It is not feature rich, but it is also not stripped down. It gives you what you need without overwhelming or frustrating you. The music does a great job of setting the mood. It loops well without becoming grating, which is rare in this genre. Enemy variety is another strong point. New threats are introduced at a good pace, and the game consistently pushes you to adapt. The challenge increases over time and hits that sweet spot of being tough but not punishing. It is rewarding to push through waves and make progress without feeling like the game is trying to break you. Unfortunately, the multiplayer side is where Gatekeeper struggles. At the time of writing this, co-op is essentially inactive. I have not been able to find a match, and that is a shame because this game clearly has a lot of potential for team play. The publisher needs to do a better job promoting it. With more visibility, this could easily become a popular co-op rogue lite. As it stands, Gatekeeper is a fantastic solo experience with tons of potential that is being held back by a lack of active players. If you enjoy games like Risk of Rain 2 and want something with a similar vibe from a different perspective, this one is worth your time. Just do not count on finding co-op partners right away. - Online co-op currently non existent - Fun art style and music - Engaging gameplay - A lot of items can be completely ignored and feel useless - Difficulty ramping is satisfying - Fair amounts of replayability for the asking price https://youtu.be/nv_4ppP0t5U Steam Curator: store.steampowered.com/curator/36307721-Healthy-Criticism/

Great game, if you like Risk of Rain you will love this. My only gripe is i want MORE!!!! i cant wait for it to go live and to get the next two gatekeepers. You can tell the love the studio has for their creation in the detail and design of the play. I would be hard pressed to find a game i like as much for the price.

I keep coming back to it from time to time for quick games. It shows the rogue like gameplay is nicely done and properly extends the game life. Start again with a new "class", create a unique build or your favorite one and just blast through waves of mobs

The only games I play anymore are on the steam deck s when games look and run perfectly on it, it feels so good. This game really satisfies the roguelike itch. This game is appropriately challenging, beautiful when it comes to graphics, and very addicting. Obviously there is inspiration from risk of rain however, it doesn't make this game better or worse, it just makes it feel different. I love to see they are updating the game and releasing new characters. These developers made an early access game, took feedback, and are releasing their 1.0 a little over a year. To me that is a significant accomplishment close to the level of Hades II planned release. Keep up the good work, thanks for taking player input but still making it your game. Sometimes we as players think we know what we want but really don't.

I will start with pros: -Great with friends -Diverse and great scalability on character abilities -Unique style and fantastic visuals Cons: -Lots of stuff happening on-screen especially in later levels, gets hard to identify attacks. -co-op playthroughs can leave the other 3 players at a significant disadvantage sometimes, where its better to restart the run because the other 3 are not progressing their build and difficult to revive. I have thoroughly enjoyed this game, especially with friends. My favorite memory is literally dying laughing listening to Dracula Flow with my friends as we are all blasting through levels. The game is 4 player co-op, everyone gets different characters (although like RoR2 you can all go the same character), and the progression of the game as you go through a run is challenging and challenging. There are those runs where you might not have everything going for you and then your friend has the build that allows them to solo clear, but quality of life changes are working very well to close that power creep gap among your friends. It has honestly been such a great experience coming back with every major update during early release and seeing the vast amounts of quality of life changes the devs have made. If you enjoy Roguelites like Risk of Rain 2, Hades and top down arenas then I believe you will enjoy this game as well. Not only is the gameplay smooth with the rapidly escalating difficulty matching very well with the player's combat progression, the overall vibe of the game is way different than I have experienced in other roguelites. The mixture of abstract and celestial style in all of the levels and enemies really make this game stand out and the music is phenomenal in sealing the whole thing together. Maps used to be way smaller than they were now, and there used to only be 3 objectives in an area, but the diversity of gameplay has changed drastically, adding elite enemies with unique modifiers (like an enemy that gives other enemies around it invisibility until you kill it, even bosses) adds great variable challenge. Each area has a specific theme that it follows as well, and because of this, you know what to expect once you have done a handful of runs, but I think this adds to the replayability. The way you earn new items to use in a run is to complete achievements, similar to RoR2's character unlocks. Additionally, some characters are unlocked through achievements. I think this is a great form of progression, although sometimes it does seem like there are so many items but that is why an item ban was added in the pre-level hub area where you can unlock more items. The game oozes with personality and its clear the devs understand what needs improvement and are very in-tune with the community so far. I only hope that when official release comes out (The beta is great btw) that this game gets the attention it deserves! Can't wait to see what else these guys create here and actually genuinely happy seeing the extensive roadmap being followed and reading those patch notes.

The game is early access. If it improves, ill come back. Rewrite this review as positive. But right now theres just no way I can. My notes for the devs are below. The items are just boring. Straight out its the worst part of the game. Like no item changes the way the game feels or feels like it makes a build. The item shops losing their three choices and currency they had in the amazing infinity demo is just what? You cant make build which was half the fun. Yes they added triads but they doesnt fix anything. You need items which play off each other and arent just carbon copies of each other like the projectile pills. Add things which change the way a character feels. The runs just blur together right now with nothing to make them feel unique which really kills replay value. Also you start with so few items that getting new ones just straight makes your runs more difficult because of variance and its noticeable.
the character Echo is super underwhelming. Like their passive should just be a part of their primary. More of a personal gripe the items are a way bigger issue.
Great game for 5 to 20 hours of playtime. Features two game modes: Normal (extraction-style gameplay) and a bullet hell arena survival mode.

you get stuck on walls and enemies way too often, and even more as melee characters. the colors all blend in too much and some stages are far too dark to tell what the difference between floor and a rock that will get me lodged between two enemies until i die. good premise, but the movement and visual clarity issues is just a no for me personally. will be revisiting this game in full release.

This game is really fun. I have a good number of hours in RoR2 and have played several other games in the same vein / vampire survivors space (probably something around 300 hours all told, 270~ in RoR2) and I consider myself familiar, and, dare I say good, at these games. I saw this game in the past but left it since I heard it was unreasonably difficult, but picked it up during the sale after convincing some friends. That being said, this game [i]is[i/] difficult. There is some learning involved, and I found it much more difficult than most of the other games in the space I've played. However, perhaps because of my experience, I really, really enjoyed that. Nothing ever felt truly unfair, and once I'd played a half dozen games I was consistently looping at least once. It's good and reminds me a lot of RoR2 with the items. The verticality is cool, and the secrets are fun. If you are familiar with these kinds of games, this is a good one and will provide challenge, but I don't think it's as bad as others make it out to be. You have to be proactive with your build, and have at least a direction of where you want to go with it, but it's very generous in letting you put builds together (the scrapper/printer is one single thing here, all items break down into generic points depending on rarity, so you can turn 3-4 commons into a legendary, of your choice to scrap). Some characters feel a lot better than others, but only a few feel awful. I have gotten all the but the last one, and my personal favorite (and I think, the best) is the Mediator. The second one, Nidun or something, has the best mobility skill I've seen (teleport anywhere on screen, or off with mechanics) but feels fairly weak. Echo is nifty, but doesn't scale as well as Mediator. The others are alright. Give it a shot, ignore the difficulty complaints and see for yourself. Experience putting builds together yourself is probably a must though. My biggest complaint is that I can't get the 16 locations achievement as I have, for various reasons, crashed or gotten DCed (from my own lobby!) around the time I'm close to looping for the third time. I'll also say I've always played with at least one other person, and all of them are also experienced with the space. Next time I play I'm going to start playing at 200% difficulty, as I find riding the edge of the knife to be the most fun - maybe you don't, but there's an awesome game underneath here. My final and best piece of advice, is to only unlock items that look good. You have limited ability to take them out of your item pool later, so know that once you unlock something you've polluted your item pool for near good, so just be aware of that. Hopefully they fix the crashes / DCs, a save game function would be really nice for that.
