Hello guys, i have played Gatekeeper for 40 hours before 1.0 before this review. The game is too awful right now to play (I lost as well my save. even with achievements, i can't access to some items i've paid with in-game currency). Many changes have been made during 1.0, it's just frustrating. Everything you could enhance is now exhausting players. I can't even find a single mecanic which is giving me joy, it's only pain For context: it's a roguelike where if you lack a dash and get surrounded... all you can do is pray. Some enemies feel like pure stat checks. Without enough HP, teleporting foes one-shot you. Without enough movement speed, you can't escape rushing mobs (one Zone 4 elite can double-tap you before reaction - unless you're fast/lucky enough to stun it). Why implement a fake pause during item selection? For new players needing to read, it's punishing. Either make it a true pause or remove the slowdown (like co-op). This half-measure has made me take damage while planning builds (common in roguelikes). Why charge meta-currency to ban items mid-run? New players need that currency for unlocks, so they can't afford bans. But more unlocks dilute strong items - making progression harder. And when everything's unlocked? You choose between cosmetics or viable builds. Terrible UX. Other roguelikes handle this better: -Free bans - One-time permanent payment - Free persistent bans Why not save banned items between runs? Why not use the grid view (sorted by rarity) instead of endless scrolling? Ideally: grid view with tag filtering (healing/fire/bleed/skill slots/etc). Stats overload is great, but please add damage breakdown per ability. Currently it's impossible to know which skill carries your run. Damage per item would be ideal (though dev-heavy) - but ability-level data would help immensely. For the "stay in totems" quest: - Damage buff turns area red - Fire zones add orange - Falling projectiles show orange crosses - When layered, crosses become nearly invisible. Conclusion: Honestly, it feels like decision-makers don't play their game. A few gameplay loops expose these issues. Steam discussions show I'm not alone (especially regarding the sluggish new quest). Community - do you agree? Are devs hearing this feedback? I genuinely love this game, but these accumulated issues make me hesitate to recommend it over other roguelikes (which I've played to death - hence being here).

After 1 run, I can pretty safely say the reviews quoting damage sponges and difficulty being too high are not really accurate. Maybe this was the case before 1.0? But while playing I actually had the opposite issue. I actually really like this game so far, it's got a wide variety of cool items, a lot of meta progression, and a cool premise with the way the final boss works. The ability to recycle items into another at specific crafting stations is very neat. My biggest complaint really is that enemy and objective variety is just a bit low. The enemies are fun, and the objectives do their purpose, but I am not sure how much mileage you can get from what is there. If this was priced anywhere higher it'd be hard to recommend, but for the low asking price it's honestly probably worth it.

this game is quite fun, similar to ror2 but it has the upside of gearbox not getting to ruin it with stupid AAA related decision decisions which is fantastic.

Game is awesome, it's Risk Of Rain but isometric! The only thing I want to ask of developers is to add the ability to reconnect during a run. Sometimes my friend got suddenly disconnected and lose out on an achievement or a character unlock because of it. And because runs can easily get to an hour in length it's very frustrating

If you like Risk of Rain 2, you'll like this game. It's basically a top down version of that. character skills are pretty unique which is nice. That said, until there is a feature that allows you to continue run if you crash, this is going to be a negative review. Tired of crashing and having to restart after having 1-2 hour runs.

isometric risk of rain is pretty fun but... already had three different runs stop short (iincluding an hour long one) because of a bug that prevents me from interacting with anything in the emporium. Fix the bug please and thank you

While the game is fun for the first few hours, you start to notice its shallowness after a while. Making a comparison with Risk of Rain 2: • The cast of characters don't feel that unique, especially the melee characters. • The items don't have the oomph RoR's have. None are run-changing, all of them feel rather "meh". • The unlock system feels sluggish compared to RoR's: You need to unlock the item, pay for it, then pay again if you want to ban it for the run. • The mobility is awkward, you get stuck in groups of enemies a lot, which is very frustrating. Overall, this game lacks the grip RoR and other roguelikes/lites have. I don't particularly feel the same urge to play multiple runs.

Update 1.0 Review Pros: - Fun an enjoyable loop - Plenty of things to farm and collect - Many different maps - Multiplayer friendly - Great art style and mob designs - Challenging bosses Cons: - Some of the enemies are still a bit too tanky when at the same level as characters "mainly those damn crabs" - Mobs can get a bit repetitive rn - Some skills need a few buffs to compete - No cancel button after pressing ready - Not a lot of screen visibility in later stages, a setting for this would be helpful - Base attack % seems really weak atm and skill cool down seems a bit too uncommon compared to flat damage, speed, and atk speed Overall, if you've ever played games like Hades or Risk of rain, then youll have a blast with this little gem of a game. Devs seem to be paying attention to feedback quite frequently so I hope this game succeeds with plenty of future content and dlc.

So, I would say this game is a great purchase for any Rogue-Like enjoyers. It is a game clearly inspired by Risk of Rain 2. And if anything. That is a fantastic game to take inspiration from. There is a very good reason why that game is one of the most successful Rogue-Likes of all time. It does of course add some major changes to the formula. Beyond the obvious top-down perspective instead of 3rd person. Mainly that comes in my opinion down to player control. And that manifests itself in some different ways In terms of items. Most item pickups are a selection of 3 instead of most items being randomly selected. Allowing you to more easily lead your character into a certain type of build. Then there is the safe point inbetween each area where you can test out damage on dummies. But, more importantly there is always a guaranteed item printer there. There is also a item store with an ever increasing pool of items as you climb through the levels and go for loops. And lastly there is a place that allows you to select up to 3 set bonuses as long as you have found the right combinations of items. And these set bonuses can give massive bonuses to certain playstyles. Secondly in terms of player control there is also the levelup system which is a massive upgrade as compared to Risk of Rain in my opinion. Instead of just a generic stat upgrade to damage and health. You actually get to select from a selection from 3 different stat upgrades each level. And every 5 levels you get to select a special upgrade for 1 of your 4 abilities. And these upgrades aren't just simple stat upgrades either. They can grant the ability healing, chance to activate it again, can add debuffs to enemies and many more options. And lastly I would say in terms of player control. As compared to Risk of Rain 2. Gatekeeper always still keeps you feeling like you are playing your actual character. There are no combos that are so stupid that they just blow up everything across the entire map instantly. And that you just get turned into a glorified proc bot. You always still need to actually play whatever character you selected. Which in my opinion is a lot better. Since Especially if you go for longer runs in Risk of Rain 2. They usually just devolve into proc fiestas. So, all in all. Would recommend.
