probably somewhere in the top 20 platformers of all time, bosses kinda suck, not an uncommon problem in the genre though

An ambitious indie platformer that fully realizes the structure found in Super Mario World. While Mario World gave players the freedom to play levels in different orders thanks to its secret exists, it didn’t offer any strong incentives to explore beyond basic progression. The order you played levels didn’t really matter and it lead to the act of clearing the map feeling like a formality. Where Garbanzo differs is having loads of permanent collectibles with meaningful rewards tied to them. You collect beans that let you buy genuinely helpful upgrades, and even the cosmetic rewards have a lot of effort put into them. Sometimes I would come across a rather tough optional level and backtrack to another level to collect more beans so I could buy an upgrade that’d give me an edge. That said, the world structure still lets you access major shortcuts that skip huge chunks of the game, so the appeal of Mario World’s map is still present.
The general gameplay is at its best when it combines platforming with light bullet hell obstacles. It takes a while for the game to get really daring with its hazards but once it does the game is consistently putting you into novel situations. Garbanzo largely uses the modern Nintendo formula of introducing level gimmicks and then expanding upon them. However, while Nintendo often keeps level gimmicks confined to their own levels, Garbanzo reuses them frequently and likes putting spins on them when combined with other hazards. This was likely done first and foremost as a clever way to reuse assets but I think it really benefits the harder challenges in this game. You get familiar with a lot of the more standout obstacles in Garbanzo, and seeing them combined and expanded upon so readily is a breath of fresh air from how Nintendo often does things. The unlockable abilities you learn also let you find out new ways to surmount returning hazards. I’ll be petty for a second and say there are a few hazards that get reused a little too much without being expanded on. It’s hard not to get the impression that the developer was fond of using the “lazily following you smiley face” as a way of adding some simple challenge to levels that otherwise might have proven too basic.
Overall though, this is a very charming game with cute dialogue that doesn’t overstay its welcome. The precise controls and snappy pacing make for a very enjoyable platformer to 100% and I definitely recommend it.

Pretty cool platformer, glad I found it. I got all achievements, but I didn't get all the optional stuff left. Like others have said, it gives a Mario Maker level vibe, and I really like having powerups accessible at whim.

I beat this game two months ago and it still pops into my head sometimes. Really amazing 2D Platformer that is superb & very fun. Everything about this game is masterful from the characters, art style, humor, the platforming itself, level design, & the music is absolutely blissful. Seriously one of the best solo indie developer titles i've ever had the fortune to complete. If you like 2D platformers that are cute hilarious & extremely enjoyable don't sleep on Garbanzo Quest .

What a fun little game. Mechanically there's nothing to crazy to it, its pretty much just a normal platformer, but it does everything in such a fun way that I enjoyed the whole experience. Also the secrets are super fun too I really loved finding those!

After pouring SO much time and effort into this game, I can truly say (after 100% the game) this is one of the BEST games I have ever played. It truly is a misfortune that this game lost money instead of making it. Criminally under rated. I wish for the best with the dev Zagawee and I will be buying Super Debt as soon as it comes out. If you are reading this review and questioning if you should get the game, DO IT. You won't regret it.

One of the best platformers I have ever played, well worth the money. A ton of levels and a good handful of collectibles to obtain, all while being a bunch of fun in each level. Some of the later/hidden levels provided a hard but fair challenge for those dedicated to playing through the full thing, and are great to beat. The music and art are also amazing to listen to and see while playing. If you ever stumble upon this game, I implore you to play it.
