AT A GLANCE

Game Name: Golden Rails: World’s Fair
Original Release: 2022-08-24
Genre Tags: Casual, Time Management
Estimated Playtime (Campaign): 9-11 hours
100% Achievements Playtime: 9-11 hours
DLC Required for 100% Achievements: N/A
Multiplayer Aspect: None
Replayability: None
Recommended To: Casual Gamers, Achievement Hunters, Kids

REVIEW
Golden Rails: World’s Fair is a casual, time management game. It is the fourth game in the Golden Rails series.
STORY
Jill is requested to come back to New York and help the mayor with planning and prepping for a global fair. Jack and Jill meet Alice and together they work on the preparations while dealing with Frank and his bandits who are trying to thwart the event.
GAMEPLAY
Each map has you doing tasks, like collecting resources and building buildings in a specific time frame in order to get a three star rating for each map.
PLAYTIME
The game is fairly easy, but there are some maps that may require additional plays to get a 3-star rating. Play time is ~9-11 hours to get all achievements.
COMPLAINTS
There is nothing specific to complain about for this game.
REPLAYABILITY
There is NO replayability on this game as there is no end game mechanics, no map metrics to try to beat, and no engrossing story to return to.
RECOMMENDATION
While the fact that the game feels like a once and done kind of game; I do recommend it to anyone that likes casual games or is an achievement hunter.

Too easy levels, just like the last two games of the series. Not really fun, it was mostly a chore

Uh, it was OK. Nothing "wow" about it. If you played the first three, you should have few if any difficulties. Playing in hard mode (there are two easier ones), there was very little strategy required, at least in the initial levels. Basically, you're building up Wild West-style townships, disposing of crooks, building a fairground and interacting with trains, all within a level's time frame of around 3-7 minutes, more or less. You can adjust music, sound fx, and shut off the tutorial hints. The only thing I found worthwhile in the CE is the extra levels. X-nay the muzak, level guides and (gag me with a spoon) wallpapers. An owl is "hidden" on every level One thing that did intrigue me are the subtle references to other Alawar games. Hints of Rescue Team,. Viking Brothers, even Rose Riddle are alluded to now and then in various ways. Cute! A demo will make the decision easier. I don't recommend it for die-hard resource management fools but if you're looking for mostly brainless yet colorful game play, this might be one to try. It's overall recommendable, sure.

It is easy to pass levels on Easy mode. That way I can stop and chat or watch movies while playing, There is no pressure. I have played some levels on normal in another game in this series. I try to get the houses & tepees, etc going first for food & cash.

This is another successful entry for this franchise. Although there is nothing really new, it still offers some decent challenges when playing in expert mode and strategy does always play a part in these games which always makes them interesting. You do have to wait quite a bit for bonuses, as there is no purchasing of them this time and there are still the owls to be found (ugh!) However, that aside, there are a couple of new elements (limestone and light bulbs) added this time and the building of the exhibition was well thought out. These people really focus on their games and they must truly love what they do because they have 8 different series. I just wish they tested a bit better because the last two Golden Rails had problems with achievements not crossing over to Steam. In this game, it is The Rivers achievement, and as of this writing has not been corrected, except for a file download. You may want to wait to purchase until they have a new version available, but by all means, buy the game when it is. P.S. - I'm still hopefully waiting for another Looking for Aliens! The difficulties with the River achievement is in the community discussion thread

Another fine entry in the series. Nothing new here, but the game is better balanced: for once, no grinding is required for the achievements. If you play each level exactly once, you will unlock all achievements. What I especially like about this series is that you have the same pool of people who either run around the map or who work in buildings for you. So if you have 3 guys running around the map, then they build a sawmill, you can stick one guy in the mill and have two guys left to run around, or you can stick two guys in the mill and have one guy doing the typical time-management chores ( filling holes, removing debris, and so forth.) It's polished, has no bugs and the music is pleasant. A solid thumbs up!
