I was looking for a game that was like the show, Dungeon Meshi. It just seemed so interesting and fun. This game kept popping up but it wasn't multiplayer and I just wasn't sure so I waited quite a bit to think before finally caving in and trying it out.
The startup screen was cute, so we can start with a pro! Unfortunately, immediately after loading in I noticed the camera was a huge negative for me. It's like a third person isometric view but in the main building it gets kinda screwy. I got a little motion sickness from that (for context, I get motion sickness from boats and all "The Orange Box" games).
HOWEVER, despite that I gave it a go and it stopped bothering me too often! I played for a few hours at a time! Really like that in the day we can go to the dungeon and at night we make supper at our restaurant. Your morning/evening is defined by whether you've gone into a dungeon/skipped to evening/went to bed so if you need to cook for your expeditions, no worries about how long it takes or when you do it! Same for the restaurant, you can only open up in the evening after you've either gone to the dungeon or skipped to evening. As a warning, skipping to evening crashed me once and I never tried it again x.
Dungeon - It's fine, just gather stuff at the dungeon and fight things. Kinda wish I could see the map separately in addition to the mini-map so I could at least see where I need to go back to discover. I like the encouragement to learn to dodge better and decide the appropriate weapons per monster though!
Kitchen - Again, the camera was not the best at times. Also, one of the BIGGEST cons for me was that the combiner kept eating my ingredients when making multiple batches at the same time! Really sad when you gather enough to make SIX batches and end up with only two. Inventory space doesn't seem to get bigger in the kitchen. I can only hold 10 things at a time even as I get recipes that are more complex.
Some nitpicky stuff:
- I wish I could at least choose whether my character is feminine or masculine at least. Or even a few upgrades to my gear? runs and running the kitchen.
- The reputation system is a little confusing. Every time there's a change in reputation, positive or negative I get a green arrow going down. I'm still not sure whether petting Poggers is good or bad.
- Some of the recipes are just straight up confusing. Especially the omurice recipe. I eventually got it but the combining part is where it got confusing.
- Over time, dungeon feels very grindy. I understand there is the option to hire people but the quality of their ingredients are never good and in order to progress, I have to keep doing the run until I get it right which brings me to the next.
- I think the old man is supposed to give tips on how to handle the next boss but it's not helpful really. It's basically "be sure to dodge, it has these powers which you know it will have because it's a boss version of monsters you've already fought". I dunno, I guess it would be nice to get some pointers like "oh when it DOES do this, it's helpful to eat a hardy meal to help with defense!" or something.
- The overall inventory is weird. I don't think there will come a point where I sell my old junk from kitchen upgrades as I am nearly at the last meal I can make so why do I carry around all the junk? I know it makes no difference so whatever but it's just odd.
TLDR;
Great game, really cozy, a bit grindy for ingredients and money so not a good game to play too long in one session. THIS IS A VERY SIMPLE GAME. If your brain needs a break, this is pretty nice. The dungeon and restaurant times can last as long as you need them to. Idk if skipping to evening will always crash the game, I did it once and crashed so never tried again.
Pros - Satisfies the desire for a game that let's you fight and gather and cook with the spoils. Fun to learn new recipes. It's giving Cooking Mama meets Dungeon Meshi???
Cons - Camera angles sometimes terrible, sometimes combining will reduce big batches of a food to like two, kitchen inventory space never increases
