I sadly have to leave to leave a bad review, which is something I basically never do. This game is extremely odd but not fun at all in my opinion. TL;DR the game has potential, but as it stands, it is extremely exhausting to play, with no accessibility options (or any kind of options) and is downright not fun to play. The worst part is the movement. This is a fighting game, which, for as far as I can tell, is focused on punching things, so why would you make the movement also involve punching? Punching the air is how you move and when you hit an enemy it is supposed to prevent you from moving, I think (it still moved me most of the time and I did end up kind of breaking the game, more on that later). I tried the giant fighting arena for a bit, which looks nice, but that's about it. The hitboxes of objects just don't work or don't exist. About that giant arena, it said that I'd have to survive for like 20 minutes. This is a fighting game, where punching is both for movement and attacking, 20 minutes of that would have killed my arms. I get that VR games are way more exhausting than pressing some buttons on a keyboard, but it should be taken into account that not everyone has enough stamina to punch for 20 minutes straight, the best I can do is like Beat Saber on Expert+ for 15 and after that I already will have had enough. Next up is the leveling system, if you want to call it that. After beating enough enemies, you level up I think, which takes you straight out of the combat area to grant you a chest with 3 cards. After selecting your card, you are just brought back into the arena. I have no idea what these things did, I saw a card with Crypt and I love necromancy so I thought perhaps I'd get some zombie or skeleton minions or something. Nothing. I got another card which I don't remember the name of, still nothing. So the cards are confusing and being taken out of combat so abruptly is extremely annoying and kills the flow of the game. Now, I did say I kind of broke the game, well, let me explain. If you hold one hand forward and one backwards while making a fist, you charge up your attack, up to the point where there are like rainbow beams around your field of vision. However, if you punch and then punch your hands up and down (one hand up, one hand down, and then lower the upper hand and raise the lower hand) and keep repeating that motion, you are just a sort of truck mowing down your enemies. It doesn't move smoothly obviously since you still have to punch every time in order to keep moving, but it does a lot of damage and the AI will not be able to keep up. You can also kind of glitch through walls this way, not much for as far as I could tell, but still a bit. Now for a couple smaller issues that aren't gamebreaking, but are annoying and since I assume the person/team behind this game will read this review, it'd be good for them to work on these things (if they want to of course) The skybox is also extremely low, so punching up to just slam down or something is not possible. It'd be really cool to just go up really high and then slam down (with some sort of cooldown of course), it'd really fit this game in my opinion. When I turned around after selecting the arena gamemode (right after the tutorial), there was text in a different language on the portal, I do not recognize that language. The voice acting is not great, the first guy you hear is fine (aside from the fact that he doesn't say all the text that is shown in his text box thing), but the rest is just awful, I am sorry, but that is just what it is. The hands look really weird, not funny weird, just weird. This game feels like it has great ideas and is extremely weird. It is really unique, it doesn't try to be a realistic fighting game like Blade and Sorcery and also not somewhat realistic but funnier like Gorn, it is just that what it tries to do, it does extremely poorly, by not explaining systems properly, having no accessibility or other kinds of options, expecting that players all have the stamina to punch for 20+ minutes, amongst a bunch of smaller issues. I do hope that this game someday will become great, VR needs more good fighting games that aren't trying to be realistic (not that that is a bad thing btw) and just be stupid fun. I wish the team or person behind this the best of luck and I might try it again in the future if it is given away in a bundle or if it becomes really good, but for now, I will have to refund this.
Experienced on the Meta Quest 2
You can view my gameplay & early impressions here: https://youtu.be/PzVIFCpaqZE You can ignore my playtime. The game did NOT launch correctly. I had to move the Unity game executable to the correct Unity folder so that the game would launch. Therefore, Steam didn't count my time played correctly. I should have known from that suspicious start, that things wouldn't go well. They didn't. Game has a story mode. I think I finished in less than 2 minutes. Even my ex-gf thought that was too short of a time to get any fun out of it. So there's also an arena mode. You basically punch to move forward and you can snap turn as well. You can move your hands / body from side to side to dodge. You basically just punch and see enemies bounce around while all these numbers pop up right in your face. The gameplay is too basic and repetitive. You can then get these cards or get none at all. What the cards did, I have no idea as you couldn't generally tell what was happening. The visuals, sounds, animations are all poor. However, the game does have a kickass original song. It's pretty catchy. Easily the best thing about the experience. Rate 3.5/10. The original song was cool, everything else, not so much.
If you enjoyed my review, please consider joining my Steam Curator Group.
