I thought I was a veteran Defender until I stepped into Mistymire Forest. This isn't just a map pack; it’s a high-fantasy gauntlet that treats the original campaign like a tutorial. The centerpiece here is the Mistymire Forest map, and it is a breathtaking, glowing nightmare. The atmosphere is top-tier—everything is dripping with purple neon flora and a thick fog that makes you feel like the trees themselves are closing in. But don't let the pretty lights fool you. The difficulty spike is real. I walked in with my Level 70 Apprentice feeling like a god, and within three waves, a pack of spiders had webbed me to the floor while an Ogre turned my blockades into splinters. The real draw of Part 1 is the introduction of the 'Nightmare' difficulty and the loot that comes with it. We’re talking about gear that makes your previous legendary swords look like wooden toothpicks. I spent an entire hour just trying to perfect a build for the boss—a massive, ancient spider queen who has a personal vendetta against anyone standing on her silk. Beating her was a genuine 'stand up and cheer' moment, mostly because it meant I finally got to see the loot chest at the end. This DLC also throws in new enemies like the Spiders (who will haunt your dreams by dropping from the ceiling right behind your towers) and the Djinn, who can actually un-summon your hard-earned defenses. It forces you to stop being a static builder and start being a proactive guardian. You can’t just set-and-forget anymore; you have to be everywhere at once, dodging webs and repairing auras while the music swells. It’s a massive, content-heavy expansion that sets the stage for a much larger story. If you’ve conquered the base game and find yourself craving a challenge that actually makes you sweat, the Shards quest is your answer. 9/10. My armor is covered in spider silk and I think I’ve lost my favorite pet to a poison cloud, but the new gear was worth every second of the struggle. The forest is beautiful, but stay on the path—the shadows have teeth.
