Edit 1: Original review below. Oh my god, this really is good. I have been transported back to the 90's with the classic JRPG formula. If this was released back then it could have easily given similar games a run for their money and landed among the classics. I don't think the LGBTQ message would have landed (it would have caused a lot of controversy) and I'm not saying it's on par with FF or Chrono Trigger but my god, on its own, this game stands up well. There's missables - a pet peeve of mine, but one I can overlook. There's exploration. It's a linear story, but it really opens up in Chapter 4. I've spent hours just combing the countryside and exploring all the nooks and crannies. It's rewarding. Leveling up has a bit of strategy. Getting stronger spells (Rune Witch is awesome) is a cool trade off. Upgrading weapons. This game does a great job of taking what some may call a stale formula and turning it on its head. By introducing plenty of things to do and adding a twist to a lot of stuff (that has admittedly been done before, in one way or another, elsewhere) this culminates in a very rich, rewarding experience. I look at this game like I look at lasagna. There's a lot of ingredients in it which I like - pasta, sauce, meat, cheese - individually, those pieces are fine but when you mash them all together and cook them right, it's a delightfully rewarding experience. Don't sleep on this game. The more I play it, the more I fall in love with it, and the price point is amazing. Games like this need more visibility and I cannot believe it took me almost a full year before this hit my radar. Great job devs! This is what games should aspire to be like. Original review: The LGBTQ push is noticeable - I've read some forum posts from the devs basically defending this choice, but I think what they're missing from the argument is how FORCED it feels. Right out of the gate there is an LGBTQ push that honestly brings nothing positive to the story. That is my only complaint. If you look at my reviews, you'll see I'm REALLY hard to please. This game so far has it all for me - it's a great homage to the golden era of 90's JRPG gaming. - Turn based (ATB) battles. "Wait" mode is reportedly bugged, but it's VERY low chance of happening, and it appears if it does there may be a solution for it. - Pixel graphics that make me feel like I'm on a Sega Genesis or SNES - The story appears to be pretty well thought out, although I am only on Chapter 2. - Rotating characters before, as I understand, one big party near the end of the game. A unique take but not one that's never been done before. It displays multiple story paths, a la Saga Frontier, before bringing everyone together. If my understanding of this is wrong, I will update my review when I get that far. - Challenging gameplay. This is a bit wibble/wobble - if you know how to game the system it becomes pretty easy, but on its face without any tricks up your sleeve, this is going to be challenging. Some may even say a bit grindy, but not required, really. I haven't had to do any grinding yet and I'm 5 hours or so in. If you like JRPG gaming and can give this LGBTQ agenda a mulligan to just enjoy the story, I would strongly suggest picking this game up. At the current price of $20, it's a good price and from what I can tell there is a ton of content packed into it. It's not empty - there's plenty to do/collect. If there's a sequel, my advice to the development team would be to not have any real mention of any kind of LGBTQ activity. You don't have to include straight/cis activity either. That's kind of the point - you can hint at things with plenty of tact, but the moment you come right out and push it on the player, it may make them uncomfortable and you immediately enter an entirely different arena. LGBTQ is fine so long as it's not forced - just like a cis agenda shouldn't be forced, either. 8/10, pretty good game so far folks. Give it a try!

Beloved Rapture is a delightful coming of age story that doesn't overstay its welcome. This game deals with one aspect of heroes tales that often goes overlooked when it comes to the narrative: The trauma of becoming a hero. At no point does the game hold one's hand over the messiness of having or gaining the power to change things, and it does so while keeping a lot of heart that a lot of other RPGs lack. Gameplay wise, it's nothing innovative, and yet as a medium to convey a story that most games would shy away from, the gameplay stays simple and even offers the option of eschewing challenge for its bittersweet narrative. Give this game a try, and hope for more good things to come for Johan and Aiden!

It's a bit buggy here and there with a few crashes, so save often. Aside from that it's an incredibly enjoyable time with great art, animations, music, and characters! The ending did seem a little rushed, but it wasn't as bad as I heard, but maybe it's just me fresh off the good, I-just-finished-a-good-game vibes. Most importantly though, the yaoi was delicious...

Beloved Rapture is a promising game that started strong but felt rushed by the end. Story 2/5 - BR intrigues you at the very start pulling you into a bloody tale of war and betrayal but by the time I reached the end it felt smaller and inconsistent in scope than what it lead up to. The character's personalities meshed well early on but as the story progressed the pacing made them feel less memorable. It had high points but there were more lulls and missed opportunities to flesh out the world and lore. Also some of the topics it attempts to broach fall flat or get stuck as allusions. Combat/Controls 2\5 - The combat had a Jank rhythm to it. The battle speeds and input lagged due to internal systems making It was tolerable. The characters had unique weapon specials but magic was all the same. The combat had the potential to be one of the better active turn based systems had it been smoother. The combat system affected things like mini-games as well making some of them like the arrow mini-game frustrating due to severe lag. Music 2/5 - Nothing too memorable but also not too underwhelming. Graphics 4/5 - This one one of the best 2-D RPGs I have played design wise. You can tell that the bulk of the development went into giving the characters life and expression in the game. The major city was a delight to explore even the smaller burbs. The majority of the NPC's had a unique life of their own some even showing annoyance at things you did like jumping in their shops, trying to cross counters or even trying to go in their houses while they were outside. Overall 2.5 - You could wait for a sale. This game is a labor of love I can tell but, Beloved Rapture could have benefited from being released in chapters or segments/dlc telling an overarching story that spanned multiple games instead of rushing and getting a mediocre product. I want to support this developer's future projects as I strongly believe they have the potential to put out some really good rpgs by improving work on story pacing, and cleaning up their in-game systems.
