Back when I was younger, I used the BUILD editor that came with Duke Nukem 3d to make virtual art galleries of cool images I found online. (Painstakingly downloaded one at a time via dial-up.) The Duke3D texture file had plenty of space for me to happily load in as many low-resolution images as I wanted, and I could apply those to walls and such in the BUILD editor. I could even string multiple images together to create little animations. Of course most of the images I used were from anime, but also video games and such.
Stumbling upon Otaku Engine reminded me of those days. The ease and simplicity I remember from creating maps in Duke3d is here. Probably easier actually. While my use of Duke3d was sort of off-label, Otaku Engine is tailor made for exactly that purpose. I'm having a blast so far.
You might notice it's been a while since the last update, but based on the blog the creator has provided, it appears the only reason for that is that there's a BIG update en route. An actual gameplay loop is being implemented, and the simple creator tools are being expanded into basically a simple game engine, so soon you can create more than just galleries. You'll be able to create little experiences, narratives, puzzles, that sort of thing.
It's cool as-is to make environments and fill them with art, but further development seems to suggest the best is yet to come.

Quite simple, quite fun. A well executed and well considered idea. Can't wait to see how it blooms with a bit more time for the toolset to expand and the workshop to fill out completely.

I'd recommend it purely for the fact that it's just a little game where you can make little places. I have other games I can play that let me be much more detailed in this regard, but this game is excellent if you just want a super cheap game for the purpose of making a little virtual space. Make a little room with images that make you happy, y'know? Also this game has really really fun wall jumping and Bhopping mechanics idk why but someone needs to make an insane parkour map in this game!!

It's a very funny game. The game is about making and exploring maps made by other people.
Each maps contains pictures and/or videos and they usually have some themes.
There can be maps about a specific anime, maps about music styles or just random stuff some guy had on his PC.
I recommend this game if you just want to have some fun exploring weird or funny worlds.
As a map creator, once you get used to how the tools work, you can make a lot of very cool stuff.

I've already made 2 workshop maps and think this game shows promise. Although the game doesn't have all the things it promises yet. i can see big things coming from this. Like making cities, creating interesting scenarios, or for the hell of it, visualizing that one Freddy Fazbear x reader story you saw on Wattpad which is probably made by someone in their late 30s. I am hoping this game grows more as time progresses and more people make incredible maps in this game.

originally i had played this game during Steam's Next Fest and was entranced by the original demo. otaku engine has a lot of potential seeing as how there's really no sort of game that plays with the idea of "virtual space art gallery" besides the condo system in Tower Unite and even in that game it's really not that user-friendly as this game is.
i cannot recommend this enough, i really am looking forward to the future of otaku engine and seeing the amazing galleries people make.
even on release day, this is stellar and i haven't had any bugs or crashes or anything.
