been a big fan of this studio for years, i'm sure they'll have a great product for us when it's out. however, as it stands this game is terribly buggy, and i cannot recommend it to anyone who does not want to be an alpha/beta tester. will review again on full release

Really fun game. Lots of replayability... to a point. There are a lot of resources, but the game does a good job at telling you how to use and get them. It isn't really too overwhelming. There are a few things which I can't seem to figure out, or are too mysterious to me. I can't get above class 4 intelligence, even though it goes up to 7. I can't imagine what I need to do to get up there. Without spoiling too much it involves leveling up different cities, but I am just... stuck even after many replays. I just kinda hit a wall on what to do. It shows 45 our of 70ish resources unlocked and I can't seem to figure out how to progress. That said I still really like the game and i think you will too. Perhaps I am just missing something you will see.

This game has quickly become one of my favorite games of all time. I love how the strategy elements mix with the story elements. All of the androids are unique and interesting. Seeing all of your planning come together when finishing contemplations is extremely satisfying. The art style is unique and distinctive, the gameplay is fresh and innovative, with a well put together world. Personally I don't see any issues with the tutorial, though I have seen other complain online. There is also a detailed document detailing steps for beginners present on every update post. The only things that I want are longer contemplation chains (which are coming soon-ish it sounds like) and more equipment, androids and mechs. It's so refreshing to see a game receiving noticeable updates consistently. I can't recommend this game enough and I am so excited for whatever comes next!

I took a break in order to wait for more updates. The game is very cool. I love the concept and the strategy involved in the game. This is the type of game I have wanted to play for a long time, true sandbox experience. The problem for me is that early game feels very railroaded. Sure, you can pick where you settle to some extent, but after that you are committed to playing through the equivalent of a tutorial, unlocking options and trying things for a good 5 hours. After that you get completely thrown into a jungle, however, barely with any guidelines. After a while I felt like the purpose was lost in the chaos of options. Things didn't seem to lead to anything significant. Going to be waiting for more updates.

I'm a little over 20 hours in and still on my first playthrough, but am absolutely loving pretty much every aspect of this. I really enjoy how this game melds the genres of turn-based tactics, city/resource management, grand strategy, and even a few sandboxy RPG elements, while also delivering an interesting, branching/decision-based narrative. I remember seeing this game on steam some time before release and thinking "this looks and sounds way too ambitious", but having spent some time with it, I can say, that it does what it sets out to do very well (even in this early access period). Definitely one of the more unique games I've played recently. Looking forward to seeing what's left to explore in the current version and also looking forward to seeing what gets added in the future. :)

I cannot recommend this game enough. Now, I'm not going to talk about gameplay too much, it's a sorta 4x style hybrid game with a focus on moral choices with real consequences and that's about all you need to know from me. Other reviews will surely talk about how the game plays... Me, I want to talk about how it feels, and what it makes you think. So, heart of the machine, what's got me so interested? Personally I quite like philosophy, technology, and science fiction. Typical nerd stuff, I've always been a fan of media and literature that makes me ask questions and think about things. Heart of the machine has become my favourite game to really think about, as it confronts some absolutely massive topics and questions. So first, at the very surface level, you are playing as an AI. This obviously reframes any moral questioning, you're not human so why should human morals apply to you, or, why shouldn't they? That's up for you to think about and decide, and the game doesn't punish you unfairly for any decision you make. Next is the levels of complexity within these choices and decisions. The game is rarely asking you to pick between "right and wrong" or "good and bad" options. More often, it's pushing you to ask "what is right or wrong?" And "what values and goals do I have, and what consequences are they worth?" Which is a level of moral complexity and ambiguity not often seen in games these days. What's most surprising to me is this is still very surface level stuff for this game, as you progress further you realise there's no real "right" choice as a modern day human moral perspective might view it. You have thousands of options but every one of them leads to suffering. It's just up to you to decide how much suffering and how it's distributed. And again, the game is rarely unfair in it's punishment or judgement of you, only really offering warnings for things that will affect gameplay difficulty directly. And then finally, the real kicker, what this game does that I don't think I've ever seen in any game ever before. This game touches on concepts like quantum bleed and karmic causality in a way so beautifully integrated into it's gameplay that you might not even realise just how insane of a concept it is. It completely reframes everything about mortality, agency, and even causality. This game truly blows my mind. I don't want to discuss this part too much because I don't want to spoil the game, but it's honestly my favourite part of the game. Long story short, this is a game about becoming a god, and realising it's a horror and being forced to question every preconceived truth of your existence 11/10 Edit: I should also add, I play this game mostly on steam deck and rarely have any issues with it. Usually only encountering errors that also exist on PC that tend to get patched out pretty quick

Honestly, this game made me rediscover how much I like 4X games, I'm not done with it just yet, only at late chapter 3 out of 5, and I can start seeing some of the issues of it being an Early Access so I've slowed my pace significantly Several spoilers of the way gameplay works up until midgame (which take about 10h I'd say to reach) below Chapter 1 and 2 act as the game's tutorial, but also an honest attempt at making you learn everything there is to the game whether newcomer or more knowledgeable of the genre, so that you can truly toy with it in the later chapters, chapter 1 was reworked recently as I write this review and it plays out with branching paths narratives to expand on playstyles and lore to grant a much needed amount of flavour to the early game Chapter 2 is where the game teaches you base building, micro managing your network and simply being inside the city, and then it teaches you the true meaning about progressing the game through contemplations So what are they? Basically they're questlines that can be started for rewards and to beat the game, if done in certain ways or with a certain outcome, you'll get unlocks that reshape your game And then there's chapter 3, which introduces the real bulk of the gameplay, you get alternative timelines and some of the ressources of previous runs get carried over, so much so that you can get back to where you were base building wise in about 10 turns (when it would take hundreds to finish said chapters) because you got all the blueprints In this new timeline, it's about time to throw morality out of the window, the multiverse exists? yeah man guess I'm enslaving those guys to see what's behind this branching narrative because if there's infinite universes might as well see what's behind the curtain yknow (hell you might even save more people cause of it <-- deranged thinking) That's one of my complaints at least, not the end of the world, just no real introspection inbetween timelines, ultimately we're here for GAIN, gain which is exclusively about getting smarter There isn't a "meta progression" system but those unlocks and knowledge are the closest thing you will get to it Chapter 3 is really well made, but it asks you to replay contemplations for specific outcomes, or outcomes that you have to for upgrades, ultimately they're meant to culminate into specific endings which allow you to progress but they end up becoming quite redundant Almost wish there was no "Victory Tab" or that it gave obscure hints The way to get to chapter 4 is pretty much given to you directly through a tab ingame which shows you everything you can do, the dev plans to add more stuff, and more complex stuff but the lack of content accidentally shows (when it already actually has a LOT) when you're mostly treading back on the same path from your first timeline Also yeah the dev is lovely, got two softlocks, reported the stuff and it was done literally within the hours, not to set him a standard but he replied, delivered, and keeps delivering It's the kind of dev that you want to see succeed, a rare sight in this industry I semi recommend if you get into the game to read on his website the history of his company as the game directly takes place in the same universe as several other projects and kinda references them on the side, it's not bad but it's kinda obscure, on the other hand I wish it was sorta spelled out to the player Maybe wait for content but honestly, a concept really well executed from what I've seen, it might just need more time (and maybe chapter 4 onward is also full of surprises to keep me entertained, who knows...)

Another one. I would like to put it somewhere in the middle. I really would like to give it a thumbs up as well. But the layout of if all. Its a truly clever setting and a really kind of unique feeling to it. A rogue AI. What do you do? Its very clearly pathed so that you should go full murderbot on humans or really go out of your way to be their friend. And you will be punished for this second choice every step of the way. Its always the simpler choice to murder your way. And somewhere here lies the problem with the game. The setting in itself is truly a gem and the texts is clever written, cynical, sociocritical etc. But the engine is made so that you can only build so many of this building and so many of that. It gives you the option of building 3 or 5 of the next building but thats about the only options you get. Do you want to have 2 mechs or 3 mechs? Its not much of a freedom in the game and it becomes painfully apparent after awhile. Also. Its a grind of doing the missionboard that the game "strongly" advice you to follow. And thats it. You dont really feel that you are breaking new ground and going your own path. Yeah you can choose to save a cat or a dog etc but none of those desicions is truly important as it would seem. So after some 20 hours i realized that even though i do want to follow the story line, i just cant go through all the tedious setting up of buildings that need another resources (nr43) that offcourse only can be collected easy by murdering humans or tedious if you want to go the other way. So yeah. Thumbs down for me. But its a borderline thumbs down. For some im sure the really cool setting outweighs the tedious gathering.
