A fantastic game, highly recommend. It's difficult to describe, but the closest analogue might be something like a Hearts of Iron IV mod?? It's a narrative strategy game with RPG elements, and you really won't be able to figure out just what it's like to play until you try it. It has a depth and polish that is really quite astonishing. Like a HOI4 mod, it's very clearly the product of an intensely specific vision, but an advantage that Heart of the Machine has is that it is the work of accomplished, veteran developers and is thus finished and coherent in a way other genre-bending experiments aren't. It's not for everyone, but if you are the type of person who likes Hooded Horse's other games, you have the mindset to enjoy this one.

Don't let the hours I've logged fool you, I left the game on overnight several times (which didn't cause any glitches or crashes as doing such would often do for other games, so bonus points, dev). That said, I've been really enjoying the game so far. It was a little confusing and directionless at first, but the very same choices that were confusing and open-ended also acknowledged the fact that there was a lot to take in and everything would be fine, the game would progress regardless of what I did. Having that within the text of such a potentially deep and explorational game with many routes and ways to play was a genuinely nice touch! I felt fine even when something I did seemed to be the wrong choice. I got the achievement for using 10 pressure points on the city, and it said that's hard to do in chapter one, normally occurring in chapter two. I have no idea what I did to get that achievement, I literally just did all the side quests I could before advancing because I was curious where everything would lead. I enjoyed the way the writing carried a distinct like of understanding of humanity with it. Now I've got homeless shelters all over the city, an ark for dogs and individual houses for cats, no murders through the first chapter, and DOOM approaching as I desperately try to figure out the best way to run a combined arms limited military force while also avoiding any unnecessary conflict! It's great fun. As a little side note, I love the way the dev pokes fun at the fear of AI turning homicidal by all of the initial opportunities to kill people being coupled with a, 'I don't know why I want to kill people, I guess it's fun or something,' or a similar line. Update: How have only 5% of players had an android pet a cat??

This thumbs up comes with the caveat that this is a niche game for niche gamers. I've enjoyed the writing in this enough to keep me going as long as I have but it won't be for everyone. The gameplay loop tickles my brain and moment to moment decisions compounding over the course of a map is fun to me, but definitely won't be for everyone. If you've ever played any of this devs other games you know what you're getting into - but this is a solid entry from a developer who I've enjoyed games from for over 10 years. 4/5

It's ugly and the tutorial chapters took me about 4 hours, but it's worth it. It's full of exceptional creativity and crazy stuff, and clearly intricately designed. Billions of options, and accesibility features which can make the game a lot easier without disabling achievements, which is really cool. I can't deal with combat, but the game has a toggle that just lets you trivialise it. Intentional story arcs involving the whole city can be triggered by a simple objective change, whereupon the flow & response of the general mechanics snowball it into fruition organically without any apparent scripting. Most of the time it's reasonably laid-back, using any failure conditions as more fuel for your story. Lots of reading, but it's well-written and I find it enjoyable for the most part. There is more combat than I'd like, but it's done in a cool way with massive variety in creative options. Total stealth (as an AI in general) is not possible, which I found disappointing; rather the story seems to depend on you immediately building a giant tower for no good reason. The consequences of interactions are admittedly much more compelling this way. The story itself makes just barely enough sense to hold together, and I was looking up plot holes ten minutes in. According to the game's "Completion Percent," I'm getting through about 1% of its content every 2 hours.

TL;DR: A diamond in the rough fusion of every sim/strategy game you can think of. It's great now and looks to get even better. For a game made by a small indie studio (or maybe because of it?) Heart of the Machine has an amazing level of complexity. It has so many well-designed interlocking systems that it's actually hard to qualify what genre it is to recommend it to people other than...strategy simulation? It has the roots of a city-builder like Sim City/Cities Skylines at its core, layered over with a tactical turn-based RPG like X-COM/Fire Emblem, with the resource management of the Anno series or their fellow Hooded Horse published game (and another great game) Against the Storm. Plus arcade-style minigames like hacking and debating. And yet, on top of that, it's a roguelite, in that each city you build gives meta progression and builds a deeper story. It is phenomenally ambitious, and is shaping up to be a truly phenomenal game/art piece/passion project more similar to Dwarf Fortress than a conventional game. That said, like most small-team passion projects, there's a few sticking points. The games systems are sometimes unevenly spread. If I want to do debates past the few story scripted ones, there isn't much opportunity to do so, which makes the excellent debate upgrade system written into this system feel rather frustrating. There are other examples, but that's the sort of "roughness" to expect. Make no mistake: just because this game isn't in early access doesn't mean that it's done developing, and I mean that in the most positive way possible. The comparison to Dwarf Fortress (which I've spent THOUSANDS of hours on) is high praise for me, and not for nothing. This feels like the sort of game that blooms slowly, but shines the more brilliantly for it. Essentially, this game is a wonderful diamond in the rough that I have no doubt will shine brilliantly given more polish. It is still amazingly fun to play right now if you like ANY of the above subgenres that I compared it to, and will surprise you with depth in the most unexpected places. I look forward to further development, and indeed to more works by the developers.

I have a hard time relating this game to something else in terms of gameplay. Its turn based strategy only, not. In no way disappointing, the game has an atmosphere and narrative that is truly unique and compelling. Fans of the robot+ai genre will absolutely feel the home turf here. This game is highly intelligent, promotes planning and critical thinking, and has just enough mix of unit and building management to make the whole package function like a well oiled machine. The dev is one of the most attentive, accessible and hard-working ones I've ever seen on an indie IP. If you run into problems or have questions/suggestions - you will be heard, and that's pure gold in my book.

Can't recommend. There's another review which sums it up better than I can, but it's ultimately just boils down to a lack of consequences, far, far too many resources and systems that you immediately forget about after their introduction, and a very... hand-holding plot. The game advertises the ability for self-direction, but there really ISN'T any room for that. Maybe here and there, in the margins, but if you're going in looking for the sort of tight control of your growth and expansion a 4x typically provides, you won't find it here. This is more of a visual novel than anything else.

I happened across Heart of the Machine in my Discovery queue and I'm very glad I did. Normally I'm not a fan of turn-based games, but the narrative aspect, RPG elements, impressive writing and rich branching structure won me over quickly. Within the first 50 hours I knew I was going to put over a thousand hours into this game. If you're on the fence of buying it or not, buy it. The developer takes suggestions really well and will add or change things that make the game better. Things that aren't compatible with their vision of the game but are still cool often get added as mods, as well as supporting community-made mods. If you're gonna give a shot to a game you normally wouldn't, pick this one. I'm so glad I did.

TL:DR: Excellent, unique game and feel, backed by Arcen's typically outstanding long-term support. At time of writing, I am 72 hours into the game and I think my completion percentage is, like 35%. But I feel this is as good a point as any to put in a review. Heart of the Machine is genuinely something new. It is really not like anything else, having elements of an RPG, a turn based strategy game and city builder. I'm going to avoid trying to say too much, since I think the story definitely deserves to be experienced, and like I did, I think the game is worth coming in fairly cold, as it maximises the exploration aspect. I went into the game cold, but had decided I was going to all KABAL from Command and Conquer on the hapless humans. Literally two mouse clicks into the game start and I was presented with the opportunity to murder (or not0 two humans. And I said "whelp, I'm committed to the bit now, aren't I?" I had expected... Something more of a slide, but nope, if you want to go that route, you can right out of the gate. From there, it was several engaged hours of the prologue and first chapter or so before the game opened fully up - and quite a lot more before it opened up even further, and I can see that there is even more ahead as there are timelines to explore (essentially not quite restarts, but which can run in parallel). While there is (eventually) a time limit, it is so big that I think it would a huge amount of work to actually reach it turn by turn, and you'd be clicking "end turn" a lot. There are, of course, ways to jump to the end, as it were, though I've not used them yet, So in general, this is a very laid back game (especially in the first few hours), and overall very forgiving. I'm pretty sure it is straight impossible to "lose" as such overall, though implications are you could come to something like that in a particular timeline. (And If I was less stressed and twitchy all the time like I am these days, it would be even more chill!) As usual for an Arcen game, the support is staggeringly good. I had known that going in, and having bought prior Arcen games, I had picked up Heart of the Machine some time ago, and waited patiently for the 1.0 release before playing. (As is my typical modus operandii.) There have been multiple updates even in the short time I've been playing and the dev is incredible responsive with issues. For example, one of the ways to get additional buildings/troops etc. is by picking researches from categories, which gives your several options from what technologies are in that category. for some of them, every time you pick that category, you might have only a 55% chance of getting a particular type of upgrade that you want. I am not terribly fond of this sort of mechanic, but I just save and reloaded when I felt it was important. One of the patches locked the seed to the save you couldn't do that anymore. I (politely) mentioned my displeasure as this change, and blow me, within a couple of days, the new patch came with an in-game way to spend resources to reroll the tech for a pick using in-game resources, and an official mod to make the rerolls free for OCD-twitchy freaks like me! And, really, that has fixed what was my only minor gripe. I really can't fault it for anything else. The game is deep without being overwhelming and well written. I still have only some guesses as to the end-game and I've still got a huge amount of the game to explore. The UI is well done, and it has to be because there is a LOT of information to process, but between the variable-information tooltips, the various lenses and the instructions, it breaks it into manageable chunks. I think the only thing I would say to bear in mind is, that in the hacking mini-game, you can move more than one tile at a time. I somehow didn't pick that up and found it almost impossible until I talked to the people on the discord and realised I had, indeed, managed to miss that fairly critical piece of information...! (The game would have told me, but it was so many hours back before I did it myself, I'd clearly forgotten!) Graphically... I believe personally, we reached the stage of Good Enough about two decades back, and art design trumps the attempts at hyper-realism. The art design here is excellent. Humans, when seen in dialogue, are depicted as sort of wireframe without particularly distinguishing features, and this really helps bring across how you, as an emergent artificial hyperintelligence see them, as unclear and mysterious - or, if going that way, inferior and unreal. A very strong recommendation all round.

I want to recommend the game, but I can't right now. I enjoy the concept, the graphics, and even a good amount of the gameplay. The creator clearly put a lot of effort into this. The story is intriguing so far, 5.5 hours in. So why can't I recommend it? I keep wanting to play it, but then choosing other games. When I think about playing, it seems overly complicated and daunting. Not because it's too complex to understand, but because all that complication doesn't seem to give rewards. I love a good 4X and have played countless hours on them. However even with this small amount of time in, there are many kinds of resources, a confusing building limit (what microbot for what kind?), and seemingly no consequences to it all. I can place things where I want. I can explore quite freely. I just spend time wondering about the supply chain with no risk. It's like studying for an exam where there's no reward for doing well and you probably can't do poorly anyway. I hope to revisit the game if they can simplify the resource chain and make some consequences sooner - especially around building placement. I originally placed things far apart, wondering if certain clusters too close would get destroyed. Nothing. I haphazardly place them and continue the story. The combat is too easy so you also wonder why you are putting effort in. It's almost as if these features are optional, but you have to click places from time to time to finish your quests. Maybe things ramp up and it's too slow for me? Can't say, but putting the game down for later.
