we needed a MW5 mercs But with clans and the story element.. we need to be able to make our custom character and a open world gameplay. For some reason they just can't seem to combine all the elements that could make this game good. The idea was good but the delivery was so so. Look it's not a horrible game, i quite enjoyed the bad ass clan smoke jaguar. BUT this came out AFTER mercs..... i feel like this game regressed in gameplay mechanics in order to give us more cut scenes? it was fun at first but then once you finish the campaign there is not much re-playability... Mods to fix this? they don't allow mods for this game...

This is unlike any mechwarrior or battletech game i have played.
But it's also the best display of the clans i have seen out of a game.
I compare the mission by mission settup this game gives more like an Armored Core game than MW5 Mercs.
You go through, beat a mission. then use resources awarded to upgrade your star (Lance/teamates) to be more ready for the next mission.
There is no salvage other than some random boxes, Repairing your mechs is not a haphazard mess of hoping you have the right parts. This is very much a narrative campaign of you playing a soldier. Not a mercenary.
Mechanical goods and bads.
-The good
The game looks fantastic. The weapons sound and look impact and more direct than even MW5 Mercs.
The mission system is very clear cut and simple to understand.
You have some build variety with how you handle each mission, which every good mechwarrior game needs.
The omnipod/omnimech system is well fleshed out
They fully implemented a battlemap RTS control system for your "Star" This gives you so many more options to make the AI more useful.
-The bad
Customization feels awkward in comparison to past titles. There are lots of menus for doing what feels like only slightly more than base game MW5 mercs. The omnipod system is great but it can be confusing as to how it fits together.
The AI is not particularly amazing. It can get stuck occasionaly and is tough to rely on. This includes the enemy AI. Which is mostly limited to run forward and shoot. At least you can mitigate the issues for your Star with the command system.
---Bottom line, It's definitely a completely different animal to any MW title i have played before. But i don't think this one is a bad shot at it.
It won't ever be the massive time sink that MW5 mercs or Battletech can be. But it is a much better narrative experience than either could dream of.

Absolutely horrendous mission design, which sees you be assaulted by dozens and dozens of mechs per mission. This wouldn't be an issue, but leads to a huge slog especially after a certain midpoint in the campaign, and none of it helps with the fact that they decide to give you two repair stations only for your four mechs to use to refresh their supplies and armor. If it has to get to that point, then the missions are too long.
I've never had to look up an actual gameplay guide for a game in decades, and most of it for the last few missions boil down to cheesing via filling your star with the last assault mech available in the game to carry multiple PPC's. And all this was on story mode difficulty.
The story itself is good in my opinion, but if the same type of slog missions return in Ghost Bear's DLC, then i'm not going to buy it.
If you like challenging games, then go ahead and buy this. But even I enjoyed Elden Ring but couldn't deal with the annoyance of these mission designs.

They have just ruined the game by trying to integrate the new money maker.
Customisation no longer works
Personnel no longer works
Buying mechs is all messed up
Everyone hold off buying or upgrading until they fix it.
Very, very disappointing

Not bad, not great. Solid 7/10. Get on sale >= 25%.
It's a hands on MechWarrior game that follows a linear story. At first I wasn't really concerned at all and kinda wasn't a fan of the story, but I actually got pretty invested following the story, simple as it may be.
Game lets itself down in game play, I think mostly in part to the AI. Team mates both Squad and Allied are dumb and hostile is just as dumb. Squad AI gets only the smallest pass for being able to be influenced by the player.
There isn't a huge variation when it comes to mech models available, but the omnimech system is the work around, but they're still missing all of my favorite mechs.
Overall still enjoyed the game

Downgrade compared to MW5: Mercenaries. Story is kind of stupid and characters are hard to sympathize with. Overall weak game mechanics and play experience. I would be perfectly fine if Mercenaries just got better graphics.

I really wanted to like this. A hand-crafted, no proc gen, linear story game in the BattleTech universe. It's even set from the Clan perspective!
But it does a lot wrong.
The game feels more like a puzzle shooter than a mech game. Especially in higher difficulties, you really feel punished for not doing what the game expects you to do. By the end, it's 5x dire wolves, all pulse lasers, or you screwed up. There's little by way of actual progression, the game gives you slowly heavier chassis as the campaign goes on, and just expects you to use them or get smoked. The opposition forces are sometimes super silly in number - there are missions where your 5 man star is expected to deal with 30-40 mechs in sequence, plus vehicles. A lot of the lategame missions really overstay their welcome.
The game also has this sense of just being a bit half-baked. The difficulty setting simply adjusts the number on the enemy health bars. Your star mates will randomly miss shots based on the enemy evasion rating. It's honestly kinda odd watching them target their "miss" with pinpoint accuracy with their lasers. The game has this cycles per mission system, but it's all 5 cycles per mission as far as I can tell. Sometimes, the briefing will say that you have deploy again ASAP, but there's plenty of time to go back to the ship, repair and rearm, and go back in again.
By the end, I felt like the whole thing was a chore, and I was glad to be finished. Little desire to play again.
The earlier missions are 100% more enjoyable than the last 2 planets, so maybe pick it up when on sale, keep the difficulty at normal (which as far as I can tell doesn't adjust the armor values) and enjoy in a weekend. Armored Core 6, MechWarrior 5 Mercs, and MechWarrior 4 (which is abandonware and totally free!) just do this game better.

all the hype about this game feels paid for maybe it isnt but i swear it has all the problems of mechwarrior 5 with 0 improvements
the mechs just suck compared to the last game when the clans are supposed to have superior tech but i know because of the last game all the best mechs will be pay walled in dlc.
secondly the allied units are so dumb they will always run in front of you
DUDE we already did this song and dance this is mechwarrior 5 launch all over again.
in short it feels like a rushed more boring more story driven game than the last game and all the issues in mech warriors 5 launch are in this one too.
i really doubt ill be buying anything piranha games again they clearly dont listen to their community and more importantly dont even care to polish their product.
i shredded mechwarriors 5 i managed too choke down the combat in this game
3 out of 10 dont wanna be a paid beta tester again.
oh yea and i almost forgot the mechs feel less customizable than ever its like the best part of earlier games is being thrown out the window.
can they just listen to the community or check the modders who are more talented than they could ever hope to be
please and ty piranha.

This is what I wanted from a MechWarrior game. A well presented story campaign with human designed missions that offer brutal but fair challenges. No procgen slop, no grinding to get to the good part of the story. You'll spend more time in Mercenaries but you'll remember every second of Clans.
A couple of flaws mar what is otherwise a spotless game. Character animations are not as good as the models creating unfortunate uncanny valley effects in cutscenes. The voice actors do a poor job especially among the main cast. I get that Clan dialogue can come off as stilted due to their stupid insistence on no contractions but these voice actors do not meet the challenge. 'Mech customization is not as deep as MechWarrior 2 but there's still a lot of crunch in there.
One interesting case is that if you find the in-depth customization too daunting you can use omni-pod loadouts which you unlock through 'mech experience. Each one presents an alternative configuration for each 'mech and there are five omni-pods per 'mech. Each member of your Star has their own unique skill tree so making sure you put MechWarriors in 'mechs that compliment their skills is necessary espicially on harder difficulties.
Over all I recommend MechWarrior 5 Clans for any true BattleTech fan. For none fans you may have to use the Sarna.net wiki to understand a lot of the jargon and shiboleths the game throws at you.
