Beat my expectations with the acting and animations. Probably one of my favorite iterations of Mechwarrior combat wise, having heat disable weapons over a shut down feels a lot better for piloting reasons. My only qualms with the game is that the missions tend to get a little repetitive gameplay wise and don't make the player think about anything else besides having the most tonnage possible. In the end game you're pretty much pushed to use 5 Direwolf's or else the late missions would be near impossible. The difficulties are also wack, at some point near the 75% mark of the story when the dropships come into play I had to turn the difficulty down to "Story mode" to even progress, and even then I won barely. Your AI squadmates barely hold their weight a lot of the time, and even on story mode many would fall eventually just from the sheer fire power thrown at you by the enemy forces. Also LRM's just always run out of ammo too quickly and deal so little damage its just not worth running them (even though they are some of my favorite weapons). Overall the game was a solid 7/10, satisfied my Battletech lore itch, but was lacking in game play diversity and a reason to run anything but the heaviest mechs you had available. I look forward to the DLC

It pains my heart that this gem is sitting at “mixed”. Some battletech fans are the whiniest motherfuckers ever. Sorry that this 2024 game doesn’t work with your 20 year old windows vista spacehulk of a setup. Don’t let those idiots or mercenaries fanboys tell you this game is shit, because it’s ABSOLUTELY NOT. This game is not Mechwarrior 5 Mercanaries 2, nor was it ever trying to be. It seems a lot of fans don’t appreciate the story-line focused approach to this new game. However I’m here to tell piranha games that’s the reason i bought this game and you are bringing back fans of the series who enjoy mechwarrior but aren’t super simulation strategic hardcore players If you enjoyed any of the mainline mechwarrior titles, specifically the fourth title, Vengeance, then this game is right up your alley. This game is definitely not as simulation heavy as mechwarrior 3. The cutscenes are engaging, the story is interesting, the characters and dialogue are fun, the sound design is meaty and fantastic, and most importantly the mech combat is deep, customizable, and rewarding. I am looking forward to playing more

Genuinely love battletech stuff. Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries was my literal first ever PC game, so this has really come full circle. This game was overall great, and I can't wait to see what cool stuff gets added via DLC.

A Bittersweet Gaming Experience Combat System: Imagine standing right in the middle of an epic mech thriller, where the battle fireworks are blazing at full throttle—only the enemy keeps repeating itself so often that you’d almost think it has a clone printer in its back room. And if that weren’t bizarre enough, your own ally occasionally charges into the line of fire—as if the beam of your laser cannons attracts him like a moth to a flame. The constant ammunition shortage ultimately forces you to switch to energy weapons, almost as if you were suddenly offered nothing but water at a buffet when you’d been dreaming of a juicy steak. Research System: The research system promises progress but feels like trying to conjure a rocket engine out of a potato—you see no big leaps, only tiny, almost microscopic percentage updates. A breath of fresh air would certainly be welcome here if you could unlock new weapons or armor. Mech Upgrades: Anyone hoping to elevate their trusty mech beyond the standard factory model quickly discovers that the upgrade options are as minimal as the difference between diet cola and regular cola—both somehow just as bland. Chassis Upgrades: At least there’s a silver lining here: the path to individual chassis improvements is paved with seven clicks—almost as if you had to decipher a medieval castle mechanism first—but once you make it, you experience a genuine moment of triumph. It’s like engaging a turbo after a grueling button-marathon, as your mech finally perks up by 8 km/h. Marketplace: The dedicated marketplace feels like that eccentric uncle at a family gathering: you already have the fully stocked mech shop and the upgraded equipment window, and then this extra store appears offering exactly the same menu as the upgrade window. It adds more overhead than benefit—it’s so redundant that it could almost pass as a running gag. Barracks Upgrades: When upgrading the pilots, progress is made in tiny, almost microscopically small percentage steps - as if you were handing over the medals to a marathon runner in slow motion, but dying of old-age wasting on the way there. Role of the Commander: In the role of a charismatic leader, you should feel like an inspiring commander leading the battlefield in epic style. Instead, your commander resembles a nondescript extra in a low-budget action flick—constantly trailing behind without really making a difference. You wonder if you were accidentally hired as an invisible mech warrior rather than the shining hero that some other titles promise. Story and Characters: The story tries to find its own path but fails to portray the protagonist convincingly—he comes off as if someone spilled the coffee and forgot to refill it. In contrast, the supporting characters resemble the eco-friendly fountain of youth at an idyllic picnic suddenly taking place in the midst of an epic battle. Dramatic moments, like losing half a mech, are delivered so flatly that the emotional depth seems to fall short in the heat of battle. Conclusion: Overall, the game does blend interesting and entertaining mechanics, yet it stumbles over cumbersome user interfaces and a monotonously repetitive variety. It’s as if someone baked an ambitious concept that ends up like a half-baked cake—a mixture of amusement and frustration. A project with potential, if you’re willing to chuckle at the lack of surprises and the sluggish progress.

Mechwarrior 5 Clans is a much more linear experience compared to MW5 Mercs. Customisation is generally less complex than Mercs which may he a turn off for some. Overall controls could also use some improvements/refinements. I’ll likely re-write this review when the DLCs come out later this year. While I do like the overall experience, there are a number of teething issues that continue to irk me. For now, I can only recommend this game if you meet the following criteria: 1) You like mechs 2) You like customisation 3) You are ok with a number of clunky things like AI team mates, terrain issues, etc. 4) Game is on 50% sale Pros: + Overall good visuals, maybe a bit too much + Generally simpler game for those new to franchise Cons: - Character design is kinda bad especially when you view them up close in the barracks - Controls & keybinds could use some improvements - Your team’s AI is still as bad if not worse than MW5 mercs - There is no direct option in mechbay to change AI weapon groups, you have to switch to the ai’s mech - On some maps, your mech wobbles uncontrollably on the terrain

Downgrade compared to MW5: Mercenaries. Story is kind of stupid and characters are hard to sympathize with. Overall weak game mechanics and play experience. I would be perfectly fine if Mercenaries just got better graphics.

all the hype about this game feels paid for maybe it isnt but i swear it has all the problems of mechwarrior 5 with 0 improvements the mechs just suck compared to the last game when the clans are supposed to have superior tech but i know because of the last game all the best mechs will be pay walled in dlc. secondly the allied units are so dumb they will always run in front of you DUDE we already did this song and dance this is mechwarrior 5 launch all over again. in short it feels like a rushed more boring more story driven game than the last game and all the issues in mech warriors 5 launch are in this one too. i really doubt ill be buying anything piranha games again they clearly dont listen to their community and more importantly dont even care to polish their product. i shredded mechwarriors 5 i managed too choke down the combat in this game 3 out of 10 dont wanna be a paid beta tester again. oh yea and i almost forgot the mechs feel less customizable than ever its like the best part of earlier games is being thrown out the window. can they just listen to the community or check the modders who are more talented than they could ever hope to be please and ty piranha.

This is what I wanted from a MechWarrior game. A well presented story campaign with human designed missions that offer brutal but fair challenges. No procgen slop, no grinding to get to the good part of the story. You'll spend more time in Mercenaries but you'll remember every second of Clans. A couple of flaws mar what is otherwise a spotless game. Character animations are not as good as the models creating unfortunate uncanny valley effects in cutscenes. The voice actors do a poor job especially among the main cast. I get that Clan dialogue can come off as stilted due to their stupid insistence on no contractions but these voice actors do not meet the challenge. 'Mech customization is not as deep as MechWarrior 2 but there's still a lot of crunch in there. One interesting case is that if you find the in-depth customization too daunting you can use omni-pod loadouts which you unlock through 'mech experience. Each one presents an alternative configuration for each 'mech and there are five omni-pods per 'mech. Each member of your Star has their own unique skill tree so making sure you put MechWarriors in 'mechs that compliment their skills is necessary espicially on harder difficulties. Over all I recommend MechWarrior 5 Clans for any true BattleTech fan. For none fans you may have to use the Sarna.net wiki to understand a lot of the jargon and shiboleths the game throws at you.

I have played every Mechwarrior: Piranha Games does not make a mech simulator and it breaks my heart. HOTAS implementation is terrible, I've used third party apps, I've modded both the games and the physical stick. I've tried to do it with MWO, MW5 and Clans. MWs 1 through 4 were plug and play for game peripherals. You have no romance Piranha Games! Sell some more golden mechs to your whales and hire a controls guy.
