Really enjoyed this! Not your typical viking story but well written, engaging and fun links to viking mythology throughout.

TERRIBLE. DO NOT BUY. EVEN ON SALE I've played quite a few text games, and I've got to say this one has to be one of the most frustrating ones. In the past, I've disliked certain text games because maybe the genre and setting weren't to my liking, which is fair enough, and I would not write a bad review about those, as it's just a matter of preference. In this case however, it was not a matter of me disliking the genre or setting. It was instead because of the EXTREMELY frustrating writing / choices / flow of the story. Events seem to happen almost at random and the player's available choices are also usually a terrible selection, where common sense choices you would hope are available are missing. Things do not build open previous things either, with events of the past feeling very disjointedly connected to the present. The story is weird and inconsistent too, like the main villain can call a court case against you, even though you did nothing, and you can barely avoid repurcussions, but he literally attacks you unprovoked and you cannot even take any intiative and retaliate against him through force / legal means?? A key part of any story is the consistency of the world as well. Here concepts and creatures and other characters are just sort of thrown in your face without any indication as to what you should expect from them. For instance, the story will just randomly mention the existence of giants, gods and other mythical creatures, but then randomly you will encounter them and have no sense of how powerful / aggressive they are and thus how to react. One could argue that is done to "simulate realism" but I don't think that's the case as the way it is done feels very random instead of purposeful. In general the story suffers from a sense of "you have to decide way too early". The story and its choices constantly ask you to "make a decision" at very weird timings, usually way too unrealistically early compared to what someone in that position would actually do. Instead of being able to go thru a few options and find out more or pass some skill checks in order to get more information and make a more informed decision, in Choice of Vikings the player often has to just decide a decision with like no facts to work with or any indiciation of potential repurcussions. There are very limited options as well in terms of companions and how you can interact with them. I spared people throughout so I know I didn't kill off any important characters, but (to my knowledge) there were only 4 romance options throughout the story, the same 4 over and over again: 2 males, 1 other, 1 female. The female is someone that helped raise you since you were a child (so so weird), and 1 of the males is a super old man. So weird and just feels like very little effort was put into the story. Or to be exact, it feels like very little effort was put into POLISHING the story, which is all the more frustrating because there IS a decent amount of content and breadth to the story, there aren't any egregious mistakes in the page-to-page writing per se, but it just feels like it got rushed or there was no verifications and checking done to actually produce a good story. Very wasted. It's all very frustrating. I got this game on sale and still I regret paying that money. Tried to refund but was unsuccessful.

I'm giving this a soft recommend. If you're looking for pillaging and plunder, this won't be the game for you. You play as a newly appointed leader of a small colony/village and most of the story focuses on managing your land and neighbors. The world building/lore is the strongest part of this game, with interesting background info on the formation of the settlements. Some of the choices are randomly railroaded or rely on a unclear mix of traits, which was a bit annoying. Romances are definitely not the the main focus, and two of the potential partners get very little screen time or personality. Overall, I am recommending it because I enjoyed the experience and felt like I got the endings I was working towards.

Honestly, kind of disappointed in the game, especially in some of the very very strange results depending on honor stats and the like I had a kind and honorable man, who was attempting to push how evil another man's father was supposed to be The response? "Ha X, you're far too nice to try that kinda thing." My brother in Christ you don't have to be mean to prove people being evil

This game goes from bad to worse, to turning you into a murderer (even if that wasnt your intent) in less than 2 hours... and I didnt even finish it to see what other not nice things it had in store. I miss the days of feeling good about what you did and read in your "adventures," It seems now adays all they focus on is how bad thing can go for you, and what kind of unthinkable, unavoidable and undesirable situations they can put you in. I'm tired of trying to figure out what the Author wants me to do in order to avoid random awful things happening (seriously what was the point of killing said person from directly approaching them, when there was another option that Allowed you to attempt to kill them on purpose? One would assume that since the option to purposesly kill them was Not Chosen, then there would be no death right?!) Anyway, if you are into bad situations turning into worse situations, and dont mind that any of your choices might randomly in up in killing someone, give it a go. If you prefer not to be made to do things you would morally object to, perhaps something else would be a better choice in how to spend your money.

when i started playing this i thought it would be a Viking action adventure (comparable to choice of pirate in style), however, its more like a noble simulator, because you basically just govern a village. the game does have themes of Norse religion and some action, but its more politics than anything. if you read choice of Viking and thought "i will be a Viking, pilage and take over cities", leave because that is not what this game is at all. the majority of the actual important stuff happens in some kind of court/voting place... it is not an enticing story in my own opinion and its way to expensive for what you actually get, but if you still wanna play it then pick it up during a steam sale. if you want to play a text-based game that gives you bang for your buck then i would recommend -wayhaven chronicles (1 and 2), choice of robot, a study in steampunk choice by gaslight, fallen hero rebirth, choice of pirate, zombie exodus safe haven, diabolical. any of the games i just mentioned are cheaper (im pretty sure), and a better use of your time.
