I want to like it, but the controls are stiff and slow, the combat is janky with awkward stun pauses, wonky knockback, and progression feels kind of empty and unclear.

I have been waiting for this game since the first open beta. The definition of a passion project. You can tell this game was made by someone that loves and understands video games. I can't wait to finish GEG and see what else the developer has in plan for the future!

I started playing with a bluetooth controller, and the lag was horrendous. I could not move the cursor down the menu. My character moved like way after I hit the buttons. It went away when I plugged the controller in. You can't reconfigure the controls, you can only choose one of two preset options. The combat is super clunky and it doesn't flow well. If you block an attack, it works. But you go into a blinking phase, and are standing right on top of the enemy, and get hit anyways. Nothing flows into the next move. You can roll, but can't add an attack afterwards. There is just too much pause in between actions. It might pick up later, but, I don't have patience for that.
I kept getting stuck on rocks and bridges.
I opened the map to look, and I cannot figure out where I am at. I hear a noise, and hey, look, I'm getting pummeled on by a monster, so there is no pause there.
I just refunded it because it didn't grab me right away and seemed like too much of a chore to put more time in and hope for the best.

"Zeldæn Ring" is awesome! You can break pots! 10/10!
After spending a bit of time in the game, I love it more. The combat of the first boss was intense! I survove thusly! First Try!
The combat is definitely focused heavily on the ^ v < > instead of diagonals, but once you fully grasp that simple change from traditional souls-likes, this combat definitely picks up and feels less sluggish!
I'm really impressed with the little details here too. Blood splatters that fade, neat mobility options given early-on, and even dynamic HUD elements! I really wasn't expecting this game to be as DETAILED as it is considering the affordable price. Whether or not this style of game is for you, the team cares about the details!
Finally, I gotta admit, the music/sound-design, and atmosphere are really hitting home! It feels coherent!
-Steam Deck compatible too, btw!

Man.
I love the idea of this game, this era of zelda is my jam, and I love dark souls, so this should be a match made in heaven. I want to say that there is clearly some work put into some aspects of this title, which means it sucks even more that I can't recommend it. The controls feel absolutely awful, you are constantly animation locked, sprites jitter in and out of existence, the story is blatantly ripped from the book of generic souls-like stories, the world is overly gamified, so you don't feel like you are actually going through a real world... There are honestly too many things to mention.
I think if they had nailed the combat and the game feel, a lot of the other issues could be potentially overlooked, but the game just feels like ass to play.

Played all the way through honestly not good controls are bad janky and do not allow for any smooth game play. the only good thing about it is i liked the music. save your money tho its way to lazily crated and no attention to even just basic graphical changes and game play. sorry had potential but was ruined by either inexperience or sheer laziness

While i am going to keep playing it, as it has some neat qualities, I can not in good conscience recommend this game due to some very poor quality of life decisions. For example the first boss (not sure since it isn't one of the big 4?) straight up auto targets you with no tell for attacks that relentlessly spam at you, i had to spam block to win, which in my opinion is a poorly designed fight for a souls like, let alone a zelda like. Dodging did not work as the opponent locked on to my position throughout the dodge.
Fighting seems ok so far, outside of bosses that is, but the tools taking the place of the shield seems like another poor decision that makes me wonder how many times i will have to swap tools mid battle just to i can block in future encounters.
The level up mechanic here is very bare bones, either increase health or stamina, that's it. It seems like this game is maybe relying on equipment for other stats, not a bad feature just pointing it out since it isn't mentioned on the store page.
So far there seems like some side quests, as i encountered two. One is a fetch quest, but it doesn't explain were to bring the items that you must carry like a zelda pot. i found one of 4 items but had no idea what to do with it and ended up throwing it at one of the glowy stone and lost it in the sprite. Pretty much all the sprites are glitchy like this. The other is to find all the maps. Speaking of maps, the map doesn't show where you are, or each individual area so that you can mark were secrets are, probably meant to only show where each zone is.
The game is split into multiple zones, its very souls like in that regard, but the zones are lacking in variety (i have been to 3 so far). You basically have to cut through the horde of ever respawning enemies over and over again to find either chests, deal with side quests, or to make your way forward to the next zone. Basically the same as any souls like, but with enemy's that respawn as you move between screens.
This review was made at one hours time as i feel like i have seen enough to make a clear opinion at this point, if i am simply missing something that's on me, but the points i have made are my observations so far and it isn't looking good.
If you aren't turned away by any of the things i have mentioned, go for it! Underneath all the jank there are some neat concepts that i only have hints of at this point and i have played through much worse for less.

Official review.
Tl;dr game is decent, but was clearly rushed
First the cons: if you get through these, then the game should be fine for you.
Cons:
Game feels pretty polished up until Capital City. After that, you can literally walk underneath buildings, and all notes, say “test”.
Three quests are bugged, or needs some catalyst I’m unaware of to proc.
There is an area in the desert, that was clearly meant for something, even has its own map. However when you reach the end, it’s just an open door you cannot enter, when you try to leave you’re stuck in an endless loop, and have to quit the game to get out. Now, I’m not sure if there’s some kind of lost woods style puzzle to solve it, but if there is, I wasn’t able to find it.
Game becomes trivial once you max the wind sword, it literally goes “brrr”.
I honestly don’t know if I beat the game or not, after what I think is the last boss, I just get sent to the title screen, which then puts me back at the hub, the npcs have different dialogue, but no physical change to the over-world is apparent.
Pros:
The game world is beautiful, it’s design is wonderful, the monsters are unique. Assets aren’t reused that much.
Sound track pops, devs did a good job here.
The gameplay is what you would expect to get, if you were playing on a SNES.
Andre from Ds1 makes an appearance.
Bugs I’ve found:
Tablets can be used to walk on water, allowing you to access areas otherwise impossible,
Collision is kinda sketchy, depending on how you approach an object, you will either rubber band or get yeeted into another area near the object.
What I am guessing is the royal symbol quest, is bugged. The npc just sits there, saying the same line even after killing, Sword rain alpha.
Tablet quest is bugged, turned in all four tablets, still can’t read the shiny blue monoliths.
Flower quest is potentially bugged. At the top of the mountain, is just an empty red chest, which is what I’m assuming is where the flower would be. It could also be missing, because I helped out another npc.
Upon completing the game (at-least I think I did). Health and stamina seem to be the only two things that require memories. Wasn’t able to spend memories on anything else.
Decent game, props to the devs for the beautiful world they built. 6/10 really hoping that they add some more stuff in the future, or just polish up, what they clearly rushed.

Controls and combat are very janky and there are no amount of updates that can fix that. Also, about half of the initial positive reviews (13 at this time) are made on accounts with Steam Level 1, not setup, and with 1 review on their account.
