Fun infantry and mortar/artillery focused operation of the early period of the war with some armor mixed in. The campaign really tests your knowledge on how to operate in snowy terrain.

This DLC has three operations, the first two being rather small-scale, and the last one being bigger. I found the last one to be unexpectedly flexible in gameplay considering it's supposed to be a Soviet counteroffensive. My first Wehrmacht playthrough on the mission saw me dominating the map only about halfway through the campaign, and by the end the enemy had only one battalion left with infantry in it.

I buy Counter Blow. I load it up and begin walking over the map. There is any icy stillness, and a feeling that something is going to happen. I walk through the forest and along the rutted road. I come to, and pass along, a log walkway. A small village appears. I see no living soul outside in the cold, and I walk up to one of the small wooden homes. I peer through the window, and barely glimpse an unlit stone fireplace. But I cannot enter; it is not my home. Standing beside another, nearby building, I peer in again, hoping to spot some warmth. I see a crude set of steps leading up to what must be a loft. I wish I could come inside, out of the cold, but I see nobody to approach. The village has already seen some trouble. One home has a window smashed, and it has not been repaired. Who smashed it? Why? Was it some soldier looking for something he needed? Was it a wild stray shot, describing a parabola that ended in an unlucky kitchen? I can't stay. There's something spooky about the quiet and chilly village, sleeping beneath a wintry sky. And I sense there might be cyber-Russians not far off, and my curiosity would neither impress nor please them, most likely. I'd best go, and write down my first reaction, which is predictable. Of course I purchased this add-on. Good habits persist. And a trip so far from my home and time is simply not possible by any other means. I will return to the village. But I will not be alone.

This one is a really solid addition. At time of review, have done the first operation and half of the second, from the Soviet perspective. The third looks like it might be the most expansive of all though. This is one of my favourite DLC updates so far. The environment in this is unforgiving, and strongly influences decisions - but there is still some flexibility there. It's also very atmospheric, and the scenery is beautifully made. Early war tanks are really given a place to shine, that they don't quite get in other operations. The environment here is an enemy in itself too - moving anything not on tracks is slow, and because of that you'll often find yourself with multiple squads pinned by a single MG gunner you can't get a good angle or supporting weapons to hone in on, and getting a flank may be impossible. From a German perspective, this expansion looks like it would be a tough one - but one you're definitely given workable tools for (looking forward to giving it a shot from their angle next). This expansion is also quite unique in that it gives access to a large number of flame-thrower tanks very early on (while other operations do have these, they're usually only available several turns in) - while they can be fragile, if used well, they're hugely satisfying.
