It was a sweet story with fun game play. Although the biggest draw for me was the visuals. Just gorgeous

This game was so much fun to play, there are some repetitive parts of the game play, but I feel as though the story makes it all worth it. South of Midnight is such a beautiful game, story, art, and music wise. I really wish there were more games similar in this style, if there are, maybe I just haven't found it yet.

South of Midnight is gorgeous. Huge props to the art and environment teams. The music is interesting to listen to, with some high variance as to whether or not it's actually any good. The moment to moment dialogue suffers. The writers could not decide if they were telling me a story, or making me experience the story as one of the characters and the writing as a whole suffers because of it.
If you liked the gameplay (and storytelling) of Tomb Raider (2013) then this game will be right up your alley. 7.5/10

the fact that "Shaking Bones" in the trailler was the reason why I got the game and I didn't to see him until Chapter 13 (out of 15) AND he didn't have the iconic song performance of the trailer did put a bad taste in my mouth.
Graphics wise: it was a bit of a let down in comparession to the announcement trailer, but it did have it's beautiful nature shots (even if it does clearly feel like you typical unreal game in most cases)
Gameplay wise: It is a VERY mid game, most gameplay elements aren't good enough to spark enjoyment. the main character was the whitest black girl I ever had the misfortune to listen to. I can't blame the Voice actress, how I do blame whoever wrote her dialogue.
HOWEVER, the Voice acting and music ALONE were THE BEST part of the experience (and for that I recommend just listening to the OST )
over all if the south and the detla feel to things are something you really love, you'll enjoy about 40% of this game and I HEAVILY RECOMMEND to buy it at a HEAVY DISCOUNT, otherwise there is no need to get the game full price

So my girlfriend wanted me to play this game and I was hesitant to buy it because of the price but I caved in eventually because of the artstyle. The game was a pretty good length and for the most part an enjoyable experience. The platforming is simple but fun and has its moments where little timmy might get a little mad but nothing that will have you actually trying too hard if you've ever played a video game before. The game is not challenging if that's what you're looking for, but if you want a casual experience with a few annoying moments this is probably the place to look. The combat is very simple with a skill tree that adds a bit of variety into the game. The enemies have really cool designs and some familar mechanics, but some attack patterns will make you mad. If you are not playing on baby difficulty then you might come to the point where some fights are just annoying, but you shouldn't have too much of a problem. I played on the hardest difficulty, but if I ever were to replay the game I would probably just play on a lower difficulty I never felt accomplished for finally beating a fight just "oh I'm finally done with that". The bosses in this game are filled with wonderful spectacle and great music. My favorite is two toed tom and I honestly want to replay that level because mechanically it is where the game shined for me. The only boss I did not like was the final boss as it was very disappointing, but no spoilers. The story is simple but has some lovable characters. You may tear up depending on how attached you get, but I didn't. There are definitely some missed opportunities, but I think the story was something I did enjoy. Shout out catfish.

I have mixed feelings about this game.
This game is visually stunning, and a love letter to black and New Orleans culture. I can tell so much care went into this game, from the unique, believable characters, the excellent script writing, and the artistic depiction of Louisiana and its magic. I'm from here, and it's beautiful how they celebrate the bayou and every kind of person down here. The lead is a strong, independent, young black female character. The game tackles real themes about love, loss, and secrets the ones closest to us hold, confronting the darkness inside us that we all hide away. There's several songs written specifically for the monsters in this game, which I think is a great touch.
But there's also a lot lacking. The controls of this game feel clunky. The game is really linear, always running down one defined path instead of searching around. The collectibles are just letters and feels disconnected to the story. You're pretty much just running through. There's multiple sequences where you run away from a monster chasing you, but you don't see them the entire time. Combat doesn't feel great. It reminds me of God of War 1 but it feels like your character won't focus on enemies. Sometimes the visuals are smooth, but even in the trailer you can see that sometimes the animations are choppy. You can't interact with the world or animals in it. Often the game wants you to look at something, so it forces a camera shift, but doesn't go back to normal quick enough. And to get picky, there's some lore inconsistencies; for example you meet the Rougarou, which is a swamp Sasquatch, but in the game, it's a bird creature.
So while the characters, story, and themes are incredible, the gameplay and combat leave something to be desired. This game is so up my alley, and maybe my expectations were too high, but it just feels like they poured so much into design and forgot to polish the fundamentals.

Criminally underrated. The gameplay can be simpler, but it's still well done. Holy hell, the presentation and storytelling here make up for any shortcomings. The game looks gorgeous and runs beautifully, bolstering its older UE4 engine with an incredible artstyle. I'm a fan of stop motion animation too, so the little filter they used on certain creatures and in cutscenes was really cute. The soundtrack may be one of the best ever made for games too. Give this one a go if you love story-heavy games!

Fantastic game. The combat was alright. There's nothing wrong with it, but it's definitely the weakest part of the game. The atmosphere of the areas FLOORED me. The music adds to the scenes so perfectly and makes it hard to take your eyes off the screen. Especially in the last area of the game. The story is amazing as well touching on very very sensitive and heartfelt moments. Lots of surprisingly dark themes that I do with they fleshed out and explored more, but that's a minor gripe. If you love story driven games this is for you.

Writing this as a white man playing a very black story.
This game was one of the highlights of my year. It has style, and fuckton of heart and soul, a great story, and educates people like me on a culture I wouldn't have known about otherwise. This story does what Percy Jackson and ATLA did for me growing up; tell the pain and complexity of human experience through the lens of mythology and fantasy. It managed to grapple tough subject matter without trivialising it, but also (because of the fantasy elements) never feeling too emotionally intense to stop me from playing (at least for me).
I will say, be sure to look up the recommended specs for this game (it should somewhere on the Steam page for this game). My Corsair gaming laptop was prone to overheating on hot summer days when my air conditioning wasn't doing well. Otherwise, it ran great with little hiccups. I've seen YouTube playthroughs where it ran even better!
Overall, my only real notes are:
1) I wish the ending was a bit longer, so I could get some real closure with the characters I grew to love.
2) I want a merch plush of Crouton ASAP!
3) I desperately need DLC/a sequel. In a better world, this would be a popular series. Maybe one day.
