Game and remaster is good, but the new dialogue sound effects are hysterical. The dragon roar is literally an elephant, and the female scream is 100% the siren scream from Killing Floor. I'm not even joking. Someone confirm this please.

This is a remaster, the game itself is as the original one was and I've always enjoyed it. The gameplay always has retained a certain niche and odd place in gaming for me. From the team composition, to the status effects, Suikoden is defined in being an original even compared to games of today. However, there's some sour notes, particularly with the redoing of certain art assets, the game suffered for it. Certain character portraits, the rose on Scarleticia, little elements that just stick out, you're playing through and go "that isn't quite right, it doesn't feel right". I think if you played them side-by-side, the original is better than this remaster, so it fails on that. However bringing this game to a new market is definitely welcome, rather than being a forgotten game.

I just finished this in surprisingly quick time. It was so much fun I could hardly put the controller down. This is as close to a perfect remaster of a classic JRPG as you can get. I absolutely loved it. Meeting all the characters, the simple but addictive game mechanics, the charming pixel art, and the story all pulled me in. There were some genuinely emotional moments too. Odessa… my favorite character. I kept thinking, what could possibly go wrong? This might be my new favorite old-school JRPG. If you love turn-based combat, classic JRPGs, or even CRPGs, you’ll probably love this. My only real wish is that the choices felt more meaningful since they’re mostly just for flavor. And while a lot of the 108 characters are forgettable, that’s to be expected. Part of the fun is recruiting them all and building up your base anyway. I’m really looking forward to starting Suikoden II. Incredible game.

The major personal nostalgia factors aside these are still great games. I hope Konami will take this as a good sign to maybe try this with other titles that may be in the vaults and on the shelves. (as well as other companies.. *cough* Breath of Fire *cough* Capcom *cough*) I haven't watched any comparison videos but man it feels good to run around in this world again. Turn based was never nor will it ever be 'dead'! Considering the fun indie games I play this feels right at home even today. Smooth play, fun soundtrack and a chill JRPG-grind. Story that's actually a full story with growth and background and not a DLC cash grab. I remember when this first came out. As cliche as it is to say, they really dont make them like they used to these days. I look forward to having this as an addition to other games that I can replay with the same joy I have rereading favorite novels and rewatching my favorite shows etc. 10/10 I definitely recommend =^_^=

Makes me nostalgic to play those two games again after so many years! Still a true masterpiece, one of, if not my, favorite game of all times, Suikoden 2. Suikoden 1 is as good too, I could be wrong but I feel the gameplay was more pleasant this time around!

I never played these games back in the day, though I knew they existed, so I don't have any nostalgia-induced bias. All I can say is that I played Eiyuden Chronicles: The Hundred Heroes and, though that game is certainly prettier than these remasters and I had a lot of fun with it, even feeling that some of the criticism it got was exaggerated, now that I played these two I can honestly say it's basically another Suikoden in all but name and the people complaining it sucked but they loved these two originals are blinded by nostalgia. I'm currently playing Suikoden II after finishing the first one, so I'll update the review when I'm done with it, but so far I can say that the gameplay in both games is very reminiscent of EC:100H, but they basically do every single thing in a slightly simplified manner, so that you can see how the systems in Suikoden 1 became the systems in Suikoden 2 and then Eiyuden Chronicles tweaked them slightly. The first Suikoden was really fun. Though the story isn't anything you haven't seen a million time before, it's well-executed and the pacing is pretty good, so that I simultaneously felt like the whole "I stumbled into joining the resistance against the Evil Empire and now I'm also its leader" thing happened really quickly but I also felt it made sense within the story being told. The focus on building your stronghold and building your army so that you were equipped to face the Great Generals in large-scale battles was also fun and gave me a sense of accomplishment, especially since by the time I got to the final battle I basically crushed the enemy thanks to the heroes I'd recruited and the alliances made during the main story. I can totally see why so many people consider this a classic and why it's so beloved. Now, on to part 2. ____________________________________________________________________ As much as I enjoyed the first one, this one manages to improve on almost every single aspect. The story is similar (young soldier is betrayed by his homeland and ends up joining the resistance and makes his way up the ranks until he's their leader) but it's much more detailed, longer, and also a bit darker. I also liked the complex relationship between the main character and his oldest friend (and first party member) Jowy, who goes on his own parallel journey becoming the leader of a different army. The systems and game mechanics are familiar but easier to use, especially the inventory, and iconic elements like recruiting various heroes, large scale battles and one-on-one duels are still present, even if the large scale battles have been redesigned and are much more complex and take longer to finish. I had no expectations for this game to connect in any way to the previous entry, since back in those days sequels tended to be merely parts of the same franchise but not necessarily direct sequels from a narrative standpoint, so I was a bit surprised when the dialogue started alluding to the existence of the Republic that was created after toppling the Emperor in the previous game, and a few familiar faces started popping up as part of the main story or as NPC's in different locations. Hell, there's at least one enemy I was not expecting to return. The more the game advanced, more connections popped up. Loved these two games, and I hope Konami remasters/remakes more of their old stuff this way. I especially liked that they have more than one ending depending on whether or not you recruit all 108 characters, who dies, and what you decide to do at certain points. My only complaint with this one is that for some reason there's a specific point in the game where your castle stops improving even if you keep recruiting characters, and that in turn locks you out of recruiting a bunch of characters that refuse to join you unless you have a level 4 castle. There's no way to know this unless you look it up, and since you can still travel to every place where those characters would be for the rest of the game, it's stupid that you can no longer recruit them because they either don't spawn or they simply refuse to join you.

This game's remaster is of amazing quality. Overall, I couldn't rate a game more highly. The audio has been cleaned up, the graphics have been tuned up (To include cleaner reflections and clouds), and the QoL features such as the UI and Battle Speed functions are incredible. I highly recommend this for any JRPG fan, and I could glow on and on to any Suikoden fan about the quality of this remaster. The Gregminster music actually made me misty eyed with nostalgia.

The Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars on Steam represents a nostalgic yet modernized reimagining of two of the most beloved JRPG classics from Konami’s storied franchise. As a long-time fan of the original titles, I approached this remaster with a mix of excitement and curiosity, eager to see how well the beloved worlds, characters, and stories would be preserved and enhanced for a contemporary audience. From the outset, the game faithfully captures the charm and depth of the original games, with beautifully updated sprites and environments that retain the nostalgic pixel art aesthetic while benefiting from improved resolution and visual clarity. The interface has been streamlined to suit modern standards, making navigation and menu management more intuitive without sacrificing the classic feel that fans cherish. One of the most impressive aspects of this remaster is how it balances faithfulness to the original titles with quality-of-life improvements. The developers have implemented features such as the ability to fast-forward through battles and dialogues, which significantly reduces grind and waiting times, especially for players who are revisiting the games or experiencing them for the first time. Additionally, the introduction of an expanded map and enhanced character models helps to breathe new life into the familiar landscapes and character designs. The sound design, including music and voice acting (where applicable), has been carefully preserved and, in some cases, remastered to sound even richer, contributing to an immersive nostalgic experience. The narrative depth of Suikoden I & II remains one of their strongest points, and the remaster does justice to these compelling stories of political intrigue, war, and personal sacrifice. The game’s structure, which involves recruiting a vast cast of characters—each with their own backgrounds, motivations, and unique skills—remains as engaging as ever. The Dunan Unification Wars storyline, in particular, shines with its complex web of alliances, betrayals, and moral dilemmas, and it’s gratifying to see these elements presented with clarity and polish in the remastered version. The voice acting and dialogue delivery, while mostly faithful to the original, benefit from minor improvements, though some fans might feel that certain performances could still be more polished. Gameplay-wise, the remaster maintains the strategic, turn-based combat system that made the original games so engaging. The game’s mechanics, including the unique “Tactics” system and the ability to develop characters and towns, are preserved, providing a satisfying depth that encourages strategic planning and thoughtful character management. The difficulty scaling remains consistent with the originals, offering both a challenge for veteran players and a more accessible experience for newcomers. The inclusion of save states and the ability to revisit earlier points in the game helps reduce frustration during particularly difficult sections, making the experience more user-friendly without diluting its challenge. Overall, the Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars on Steam is a commendable effort to revive two classic JRPGs for a new generation while respecting their roots. It offers a seamless blend of nostalgia and quality improvements that make these timeless stories accessible and enjoyable today. While some minor graphical or performance hiccups might occasionally be noticeable, they do little to detract from the overall experience. Fans of the series will appreciate the opportunity to relive these adventures with enhanced visuals and streamlined gameplay, while newcomers can discover what has made Suikoden a beloved franchise for decades. This remaster stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of these stories and characters, and it’s a welcome addition to any JRPG fan’s collection. Rating: 9/10

Absolutely worth it. I now understand why Suikoden II in particular is regarded by many as one of the best RPGs of all time. Both games are also hilarious at times with some of the dialogue choices.
