Sand Castle Reviews
A date on the beach, small talk, a little bit of nostalgia and an important decision. All of that taking place to the accompaniment of the summer breeze.

Not a bad calm visual novel, suitable for fans of reading. It's a little sad, but it's nice to play

A fairly short and light novel about love. As it is written in the description of the game, everything came together, it turned out to relax in the evening.

Another amazing, short but sweet VN from Bite The Rock. If you enjoy dark, but thought provoking visual novels, I strongly recommend you check out this and their other works.
Hoping to see them release more soon!

Before reading this work, I was not familiar with the genre of visual novels. The formula for the success of the project rests on 3 main components: setting, music, graphic content.

Sand Castle is a very short game. It is well written and flowed well. It was a sweet and sad story with great art. I personally liked it.

The art and sounds are good but they are the only good things in here. The game is very short (10-15 minutes top), the story tries to be meaningful, but it's flat and unrealistic, It's just impossible to believe characters.

An love story from the outside, where there is a place for both sadness and joy. Plunge into this world and relax. The visual novel is nicely designed.

That was a very touching game. Short but emotionally impactful. It was a great short visual novel.
I'll never look at sandcastle or beach again without tearing up.
Beautiful art, sad but sentimental story, and beautiful music and writing. I think it's worth the full price.

I bought Sand Castle because it looked cute and other reviews made it sound quite sweet with an emotional element. It also appealed to me as it was clearly fairly short (I expected around 2-3 hours as I intentionally read VNs much more slowly than I would a book, to ensure I don't miss the opportunity to absorb anything. It's much easier just to look back again in a book) and would therefore fit well into a personal schedule which provides negligible spare time.
Story
Looking in as a third party upon the interactions between Gilt and Amare, the reader finds them having a date at the beach, during which time they reminisce over (three) dates that they have been on together previously. Or have they? And that is the crux of the whole narrative.
Gameplay
This novel is almost entirely click-and-read, with just one either/or option being presented late on, which will lead you to one of the two possible finishes (making it as straightforward as possible to find them both). The game does provide an unexpected twist in the later stages which adds a little meat to the dish being served.
Graphics and Sound
I finished the story yesterday and honestly, I can't remember the sound. Therefore it couldn't have been bad else I'd have felt irritated by it, but neither could it be standout (which, for the price, is fair enough). Graphically the artwork is quite simple, low on detail but still attractive and pleasing. I think the sea at the beach looks good, and the rooftop date possesses the most appealing backdrop in the game. I have chosen not to post a screenshot as if you decide to buy this novel, you should not have the biggest reward offered spoilered for you ahead of time.
Experience and verdict
The extreme brevity of this offering caught me by surprise despite having read several reviews ahead of downloading it. I assumed the minimal time-played reviewers were skim readers, but apparently not. To be finished inside half an hour, having taken my time every step of the way, was something of a shock.
The controls available are pretty good for something so small, featuring all of the basics, rollback/forward, skip, save/load, screen size, text speed; with a menu to guide you on how to access them; although there are no frills, such as a CG or backdrop gallery.
Overall, I found the story readable, although as the reviewer Ichigo75 has correctly pointed out; it is simply too short to give the reader time to establish any kind of emotional bond with the players, and therefore as good as impossible to really feel emotionally affected when the twist arrives.
This is yet another offering where Steam's rigid thumb up or down verdict system isn't good enough. Does it deserve a thumbs down? No, not really. The concept is solid and the execution isn't bad, either. But it's rather like buying an ice cream and getting an empty cone. There just isn't enough there to leave you feeling satisfied.
For that reason, I cannot give it a thumbs up either, as doing so (to my mind) amounts to recommending a purchase; and despite the very low price, would you really want to buy a blueberry yogurt without the blueberries? (With apologies to those affected by that analogy).

The cover art intrigued me into buying/playing this game.
Honestly, with how short it is, the twist feels like it didn't have any time to breath. Like, there was no impact on me by this story. I hate to be critical about games of short length, but I feel like this would be better off as a free visual novel, since it feels more like someone flexing their creative muscles for the first time. Thus, people may be more willing to look at your products when you release in the future. Something akin to Doki Doki Literature Club and it's plus variant.
I think a longer story with more intricate plotting would do wonders for something akin to this idea. As it is, I can't say I had enough time to grow to care about anyone within the story or any of the stakes at play.
It's not terrible, or even really bad. I would to be clear. It's Just far too short to gain any emotional connection.
