Cryptkeeper is a good game for its novelty alone. It has a fine overall execution but based on its pitched premise I think it tends falls shorter than what it promises. "Say Anything" (the overall gimmick/novelty): The first couple minutes of everybody's game is going to be spent typing in random words and enjoying the responses from the Cryptmaster. His voice acting is phenomenal and the lines are really funny, this is a ton of fun. There are even other characters in the game with their own responses however they all fall short compared to the Cryptmaster. Unfortunately the responses you get are specific to the words you often say and not really the context they are said in. For example if you say "castle" in the swamp you will get the same response as if you said it in the castle. This neuters a lot of the gimmick overall however context specific responses are still a lot of fun on the chests. Essentially the chests are a questions based guessing game where you ask the Cryptmaster about an object and then have to guess what it is. These are really fun and you can make the cryptmaster lick eyeballs among other things. Overall the Say Anything gimmick carries the game pretty far but by the end you can't help but feel like a lot more could have been done with it. Abilities/Quests (General Gameplay): You have a cadre of formerly living heroes in your party. Each of them has a hangman style progression system in which you accumulate letters to guess their unique words to unlock new abilities/lore. I liked this progression mechanic throughout the whole game and I thought it was a fitting way to flesh out the gameplay. The abilities you unlock are pretty much exclusively used in combat, unfortunately the combat gets stale pretty quick. The combat itself feels out of place in the game because it has you typing in commands as fast as possible to do your abilities (I suppose their is a turn based mode but it is not recommended). The combat has some attempts at depth but it never feels that necessary or fleshed out, even the final boss I took out with ease using some of the earliest abilities I unlocked. I suppose the last gameplay element worth mentioning is "Whatever", this is the games in universe card game that you can duel people with. Not as addicting as Gwent but I thought it was an interesting idea with potential. Unfortunately it isn't that well implemented and ends up being very RNG dependent as a result. For example I tried to make a deck around CRYPT, this ended up taking 5+ turns to complete (often more) at which point I would get bodied. Your best bet in this mode is to just take the highest damage cards and pick the letters that appear most - it wasn't necessary to try experiment or strategize outside of that. Mindbending Riddles (Quality of puzzles): I think it is worth touching on this as it is a large part of the game. If you like crossword puzzles and riddles I think you'll enjoy the riddles. My favourite part of this was guessing the objects the Cryptkeeper had based on his responses to your prompts. The writing for these was really well done and it feels like a genuine alien is trying their best to describe the object. I did find the difficulty ended up being inconsistent with some puzzles being super easy or super obscure. Personally I would never refer to a hair comb as having "teeth" or a telescope to be a "spyglass". These things aren't foreign to me but their weird enough that it felt kind of cheap and unintuitive. Definitely if you are not fluent in english or a native speaker this will be a massive struggle for you. Admittedly I turned on the easier puzzles option halfway through the game - largely because if you get something wrong the game will never tell you what the actual answer was. If there was an optional riddle I couldn't solve I at least wanted to know what the answer actually was before I moved on. Uncover the mystery (Story): Not much to say here honestly, I felt the story to be kind of forgettable. The Cryptmaster once joked about something being "another exposition dump" which I found funny, there is certainly a lot of that. While these things aren't necessary, the game has a lot of lore and exposition that it will dump on you if you want it. I didn't really care for it and skimmed through a lot of it, I can't say it was bad but it wasn't what drew me to the game or kept me playing it. Again, overall I think it was a great game largely for the novelty itself. I did buy it on sale for $26.00 CAD. Truth be told I think it was a bit expensive for what I got however I feel that way about most games nowadays.

It's a delightfully unique little word-based adventure game that innovates on the idea of typing to take actions in a way i've never seen before. It's funny, it's charming, it's atmospheric. It's a bit challenging too, but it has so many tweakable settings that you can make it easier or harder as you see fit. Please give this game a try, we need more innovation in the gaming scene like this.

A delightful typing adventure with an ever-present darkly charismatic soon-to-be undead overlord, featuring dad jokes, snarky riddles, tasting shoes, general stupidity, a card game, rats, bug hunting and fishing. Simply incredible. It was also a stark reminder for myself that I'm still an ESL and my language studies are lacking in the riddles and cryptography department. Thanks, Cryptmaster, rather grim of you.

This game is not awful, so I'll say the good things first. I adore the voice acting. I like the art style, even if it gets a little disorienting sometimes. There's clearly a lot of love and hard work that went into this. The humor is hit or miss for me, but reddit users will probably enjoy it. Very interesting concept, but sadly never goes anywhere and quickly becomes stale. The algorithm is not as clever as it presents itself to be and quickly devolves into generic "hmmm?" answers when it doesn't know how to respond. The combat is awfully repetitive and needs a major revamp, but sadly you spend most of the game fighting. In the end it's just too long and shallow for what it offers. I would probably enjoy it a lot more if it was more focused and tighter. As it is right now it's just exhausting to even think about booting it up. I looked up the completion achievement and it's at 12%. There's a reason why most people stop playing.

I quite enjoyed the game; the typing mechanic was unique and I really enjoyed the voice acting. The whatever card game was interesting and allowed for an easier method of farming souls. I did find the game too short to complete any characters memories but I'm holding out for future updates to add more content. I'll hopefully add more after future updates.

Imagine that crosswords were fun, mix them with a surprisingly groovy soundtrack and a dangerously high concentration of puns... and you get this game! All in all I enjoyed the riddles and puzzles the most, so much so that, despite a lackluster system of typing combat, I would highly recommend this game to anyone who's ever had fun mulling over a wordplay. The story itself is also full of fun and wit, all of it delivered in a masterful voice acting peformance by the game's eponymous Cryptmaster.

What a blast! I've completed the story but I definitely will be returning to this. This game feels like such a good brain exercise while also being really fun. There are still some riddles I'm stumped on, but that's what'll make finally solving them on a second play through all the more satisfying. And if you're not sure you have the linguistic chops for it, there are several options to make things easier which I think is fantastic for accessibility.

Unfortunately it's just not a good adventure game even though it has this really cool and innovative mechanic. Positives: - Great art style and voice acting. Same goes for the sound design. - Figuring out words for new abilities is fun, along with all the mechanics that feed into it such as unlocking chests and "looting" after combat. - The commentary and the reactions of the narrator are pretty funny. They fit well into the absurd world and story. - Typing words works really well for conversations with NPCs compared to just selecting a dialog option. Neutral: - The card game is fun but very luck based. - The map is useful, but the connections between the rooms are confusing since they all look similar in one area. Negative: - Not only do you have to remember which words are available, but also if and when you can use them (you have to manage your resource meters). And then also input these words quickly without typos. Doing all of that in frantic combat is just not reliable or fun. This real-time combat is recommended, but I found the slower turn-based combat to be way more enjoyable. - In the end, I just spammed the basic free abilities. HIT JAB ZAP HIT JAB ZAP HIT JAB ZAP Heal. The fact that this was a reasonable tactic compared to typing different longer words shows that any sort of complex combat or playstyle is just flat out missing. Only a handful of enemies even make you think about what you are doing. - At the end I was only halfway done with unlocking abilities. I even failed most chests and riddles because I played without hints (which was the correct choice because hints are "let me solve that for you"). - So there is about 10 hours of adventure in this game, followed by 5 more hours of grinding for the remaining unlocks. Overall, it feels like what we have here is this one interesting mechanic (unlocking abilities by collecting letters), but they forgot to design a "normal" RPG around it and put in enough content that would actually make use of what you unlocked.

Truly an excellent and innovative game, combining a dungeon crawler with a riddle/puzzle and typing game. Very cheeky and fun, highly recommended.
