The game is a very fun and approachable way to get started with fiddling with Linux. It teaches and trains you on using actual Linux commands as you go through its story. You get to snoop around networks, read confidential files, crack password hashes, etc. Really thrilling! I recommend it to anyone interested in cybersecurity. I hope World of Haiku gains more traction. I crave for more content!

As a CySA student, this is a fun way to get you started in the field of Cybersecurity. You also get familiar with the Linux Terminal (CLI). Throughout the game, you're given tasks and complete them by using Linux basic commands to navigate through the system as well as some network/pentesting specific commands to aid you. I've dedicated some hours in this game so far and noticed that it's primarily "Red Team" stuff. I haven't played far enough into the game to see if there are "Blue Team" tasks. Anyway, I won't rely on this game to practice or build up my skills from. I am aware of the Haiku Pro tier, but with the price of this game, I was expecting a little more. There should be an option or story mode for "Blue Team" missions while the original story should be labeled as "Red Team". And a multiplayer mode to do "Purple Team" tasks (just throwing it out there). Anyway, its a fun game for what it is and I sense it has some replay value.
If you're really serious about cybersecurity and want to learn or build up your skills, I suggest looking elsewhere (HTB or TryHackMe).
Edit 10/01/2023: It will be cooler if this game has an online CTF mode. That will be fun.

This is not a cyber sim, but a linux command line starter guide. for peaple who have no command line expiriance at all.
If you know Linux the terminal emulation is so very frustrating and limited.
No tab autocomplete, no ctrl-A / E, no piping for christ sake, no support for find or grep or xargs.
Your hands want to fly on the terminal but the game clips your wings.

Could have been great but they essentially used Steam as a test-bed, took people's money, then expected them to pay more through their site for the full experience, and now have de-listed the game from Steam so they can run the online version through their site where they will charge you monthly. What do we get for it? An app we "own" that is no longer supported and a joke of "one free month" to the new online version.
So now instead of owning a product and possibly paying for additional content as it comes out, you now can't own it and are forced into a scummy subscription service that is meant to suck as much money out of you as possible by keeping you on their service. This kind of shit is getting so tiring. The saying "If digital isn't owning then piracy isn't stealing" is getting truer and truer by the day.

Its fun but... Currently too short of a game to get a recommendation for full price. Currently only volume 1 is playable. And if you have any Linux experience it goes by quickly. Unfortunately the game was over long before we got into anything that advanced.
Get a Raspberry pi, or put a Kali VM on your computer instead.

4 missions down so far, complexity is increasing. Excellent lead through all the basic linux instructions. Very cute game, very cyberpunk feel. Note, you can use space bar to speed up dialogs.

The game has about an hour of play time currently. I would highly suggest skipping it until it is on sale because $25 for an hour of game play is just not worth it.
The story is kind of cliche, and the game play is minimalist. You get some very simple linux commands and the game basically is a forensics game. Find some log-in credentials to get into some where else and use a few scripts. As far as being a realistic simulation of hacking, that is pretty laughable.
Will come back to the game in a year since I can't refund it and see if it got any better.

Game is interesting and quite fun. Though I cannot recommend this product as it has far too little content to warrant it's current price. If the game was flushed out more (and not just with the subscription only service) I would definitely recommend it. All in all feels like a fun early access style game, but not a full polished product.

I've decided to play this game as an absolute beginner. The game itself has been a blast, and I didn't stop until I completed the campaign. HOWEVER, I cannot recommend it because there's a semi-hidden subscription service that's not advertised, but which prevents you from getting all the goodies featured in the trailer.
Let me go into more detail:
PROS:
- Immersive experience and engaging game dynamics
- Easy to follow tutorial, so it's ideal for beginners!
- The storyline is interesting and the NPCs add flavor to the story
- Completing your missions feels satisfying as you're offered positive feedback through in-game badges and achievements
CONS:
- You cannot level up your in-game badges beyond level 1
- There currently are a series of commands that you don't even need to use to complete the game; this is confusing tbh
- There's no real ending, only a cliffhanger; this makes the game feel short, almost like an Early Access
- The trailer makes you think you'll get the full package, including the Haiku Job-Connect which adds the option to update your Linkedin profile with the skills you've mastered. However, to access such feature you have to pay for a subscription service to "Haiku Pro". The game itself doesn't give you any info on Haiku Pro, and you can only learn about it if you go to the game's official website, visit the About page, and scroll down a little bit until you find the "Get Haiku Pro" button. This makes the game feel like a marketing scheme; you get hooked on the game and its dynamics, only to be greeted by an external paywall in the form of a subscription service that's semi-hidden!
Despite having had tons of fun, this last detail makes me feel cheated. I'm really torn because the game was pretty cool... but, an external subscription service to get all the features? Really? At least be honest and make it clear from the beginning that you won't be getting the full experience if you buy the game here on Steam. You'll only get the full package if you subscribe to "Haiku Pro" and pay for either Premium or Full Access plans.
Now, I feel like I've ended up paying to play a demo of the real thing, and it sucks :(
