Played this cooperatively with my GF. Glad I got to play it, but I never want to play it again. It tries to take the characters into a darker storyline, with a quality of execution that reminds of Shadow the Hedgehog. The gameplay is decent, with a reasonable variety of special moves and grabs you can perform. The worst part of the game is that when player 2 runs out of health, they get kicked out completely, even if there's another character they could switch to. You have to switch BEFORE running out of health, or you're just out of luck. They can't even rejoin when a new level starts. Thankfully, the password system is a very simple 4-digit number for every scenario, so it's easy enough to get back in via reset. That said, I would strongly recommend that you use an emulator to play this. When you download this game and check the files, there's just SNES roms for each language you can play in, so you can enjoy frustration-easing features like save states and overclocking to bump up the framefrate. You'll want save states especially for the motorcycle portions, since they're pretty finicky, and it's really easy to die.
The value prospect is a little iffy on this, given that it's just roms with a custom intro and outro and professional translations in a variety of languages. If one of the languages is your primary language, I would recommend this version pretty strongly, given that, to my knowledge, there was only ever an English fan translation (which I felt was a little rough, personally, and I prefer the English translation here, too). $15 is just too much, though. The new cutscenes are really well done, and translation work of this quality can get pretty expensive, especially when you've committed to doing several different languages.
The GAME itself, however, I just don't feel is worth that much. It's not as good as River City Ransom on the NES or the modern River City Girls, and many features from those games are missing: there's no RPG elements, no shops (meaning no way to heal outside of finishing the level you're on), no side areas, and no weapons. I guess it was trying to be more serious and dramatic, but in doing so, I felt that it left a portion of the series' identity behind. The other Kunio-kun beat em' ups are immediately idtentifiable and distinct from contemporary beat em' ups. With t,his one, however, I couldn't help but wish that I was playing Streets of Rage, Final Fight, Double Dragon or TMNT, which are all better designed and generally more fun. I do like some of what this game is doing, so it's a very soft "no," mostly due to the price. If you can get it on sale for ~$5, like I did (and you have someone willing to play it with you), then I would recommend it.
