'Basault VR' is supposed to be a fun, spiderman swinging action shooter with a sci-fi theme to it all. What you end up with is clearly a collection of assets thrown together to make a bland and unexciting game. Worst of all is the controls. With grab used for just about everything ignoring the other buttons and making the game feel uncontrollable and on the Oculus Rift the guns sit at an unnatural angle as well making the game feel worse than it already is. While I have only seen a bit of the game due to constantly having to start in the same place over and over I can easily see there is nothing here worth £12.39 and certainly not a lot here worth recommending at any price. This is one of those games I will get getting a refund on, it really is that bad.

EDIT: The dev added basic pointers to the grappling hooks so you can see where you're shooting, and I had a blast playing again. Lots of fun
Alright, this is an odd one for me. Lets start with the cons, since I know that's what people need to read;
The main selling point of this game: grappling hook based combat. The grappling hook is really hard to use. The only presence you have in the game is a little sphere, so trying to figure out where you're pointing before you've gotten the hang of it is rather difficult, and discouraged me from using the hook at all except for the spots where you literally cannot continue without it. It also doesn't help that a large majority of the "rooms" you fight in are either super skinny, or full of holes. And if you fall through a hole, you lose. All the way back to the start. That's a lot of risk just to feel kinda cool. I just compare it to Windlands 2 in my head, where I could easily fling myself into the sky, take aim with a bow, and smack a boss right in the weak spot without ever feeling out of control.
There is only one enemy right now, with only 3 attack patterns: Quick fireball, charged fireball, and melee. The enemies do not move, do not gain health as far as I can tell, and only increase in numbers.
There is no virtual turning option. In a game where you're supposed to be flying through the air shooting baddies, it's really hard when you have to turn manually, and if you missed an enemy, turn all the way around. This may not be a problem for some, but I have limited room in my apartment, so forwards is the only safe direction for me.
Pros:
Guns are fun and surprisingly well done, as well as easy to use.
The simple aesthetic of the maps was well done imo, although there are weird overhangs that make getting back up if you throw yourself over the edge very difficult
There's a host of achievements for those of you out there who like checklists, although I was able to complete quite a few in a single cycle.
Your ethereal gun can be customized using points you get from completing achievements.
The music was fun.

I got no sound in the game using Index, this really needs to be fixed asap. I was able to fix the issue by opening the desktop view and then click on the screen with the mouse - then suddenly I get sound using the Index.
Also jumping pressing the B button on the Index controller is very annoying, why not the A button?
Grabbing the gun is often cumbersome, controls could be much improved.
Also do not use both trackpads for the menu, the left should suffice. I constantly and accidentally touch the right trackpad when playing - and then the game stops and I get the menu screen, sigh...
See how they did controls in Windlands 2, it's far more intuitive and much less frustrating.
There are no graphics options in the game - this is unacceptable for a PC VR game. The menu system is cumbersome to access, the menu design is not good.
In Doom VFR, see how monsters crawl on surfaces and ceilings - I have only played the first level in Basault, and maybe opponents move more in later levels, but for now opponents are not animated much better than the opponents in Doom - that is the original 2D version from 1993 ;-)
The gameplay will depend tremendously on how opponents are animated, their AI (or lack of) and the battles. I'm fully aware that Doom VFR had a very different budget and many more devs to help making that game, but with its relatively high price Basault needs to deliver - the Basault dev is charging a similar price as the full price of Doom VFR, right now Doom VFR only costs about $5. Right now I don't think Basault should cost more than $5.
Btw, maybe the above sounds like the game is all bad - it's not - I lappreciate the nice textures and the strange world - and the npc shadows! I am using an oc'ed RTX 3090 and i9 10900K (10 cores/20 threads, 5.3 GHz) and did get solid 90 fps in the first level using Index res 300% - but not in the tutorial level. Since not much is going on, I wonder if more performance can be gained by further optimizations.
I think this can be a fine game, but much work needs to be done, right now I consider this game more a tech demo and/or early access. I can't recommend buying this game in its current state at the current price.

First Impression: It's a solid experience so far. A little rough around the edges, but still pretty enjoyable. If you are curious seeing this game in action and a completed run, then watch the video below. There is no commentary. Just enjoy the show and I hope this helps you decide on purchasing this or not.

Having a good time with the game so far, good soundtrack the web swinging is really nice and I love the gunplay. There were a couple issues I ran into while playing on the Oculus Quest 2.
An issue for me at the moment is the angle that the guns are held. The barrel of the gun needs to be tweaked maybe 10-15 degrees upward so that it feels natural to hold and aim.
The shotgun is hard to reload at the moment due to the angles as well it takes a little fiddling at times to get the next shell into the barrel.
Dropping your gun on the ground sometimes drops below the real world floor making it difficult to retrieve your gun.
Laying your gun on top of your other gun while dual wielding to reload for example, doesn't allow you to grab the weapon back with your other hand. The only way to retrieve the weapon is to toss it in the air which some times trigger the web instead of the grab.
The ethereal gun is a little finicky to grab at the moment causing me to keep shooting webs at the ground beside or behind me.
This isn't really an issue but a preference.. maybe adding the holster circles instead of grabbing pistols from behind shoulders? or even under the armpits like Boneworks.
Other than those few issues everything has been running smoothly for me at the moment. Anyways awesome game and cant wait for future updates.
