Playtime: 1760 minutes
After 2.5 hours, I completed one campaign vs AI to achieve a French victory in Winter of 1760. After 15 hours, I was challenged to even win once as the British. Several challenges I encountered actually resulted from my misunderstanding of key rules regarding stacking, sea lifts, and the availability of force pool militia in defense of their home locations. I advise players to read the rules and be patient; the impact of some rules is subtle. I have played other Avalon Digital games and must say the AI is very competent. The original board game avoided unnecessary complexity and provided an immersive and challenging game which my friends and I enjoyed for decades; this is a most worthy adaptation and successor. I had originally given this game high praise after 15 hours of play, however, I subsequently encountered a consistent bug which ruined the game experience: the program skipped seasons! E.g., upon completing my turn in spring of a year, the game progresses to the autumn of the following year, pre-empting two full season moves for my side! When working correctly, this is a very evenly balanced game, so eliminating even a single season of moves effectively undermines one's ability to win the game. I have no idea why this bug arose when it did; I reported it, and the developer has remedied the problem. The game is once again challenging and great fun. This may be the only game out there for this period in colonial North American history, and it is worth owning and playing repeatedly.
