So far, I'm really enjoying this game. There are a few small things that stand out as potential future patches, but overall the vibe and aesthetic are really fun. The reactive music is great, and I enjoy the UI being worked into your weapon and tattoos. Currently my main complaint is that when you have tutorials enabled, they often don't go away, specifically the one for placing a marker with your spirit arrow, which won't disappear even if you place a mark or switch arrow types.
I really like that there is a lot of variation in the available difficulties, including the pacifist mode if you just wanna wander around. I look forward to continuing to explore, and seeing what further updates the game might have.

For a game made essentially by one person, it rocks! The only downside of the game is it's so big with not enough to do. There are journals of other denizens of the the world, and the constant fight for survival against stronger and stronger enemies, but I don't really think that it's enough to justify how big the world is. I hope with the full release there's more story laid out through the game to keep players interested outside of just moving forward for moving forward's sake.

I don't think I've experienced such a dichotomy of feelings about a game quite like I have with this one. I like the game, and I dislike the game.
From a technical standpoint, Nate clearly knows how to make a game: the graphics are excellent, the game mechanics are excellent, the Foley work is excellent. But there is just something about the game itself, the game's environment, that is insidious. It is incessantly oppressive, to the point where it begins to take on nightmare proportions. After discovering only three of the six zones, I could play no longer. I became mired down in the swamp zone for so long, with its interminable rain and haze, that I literally began to think (as my character) I was losing my sight along with my sanity. Although I found myself drawn back to the game again and again, I gradually realized that I wasn't playing for enjoyment, but rather to assuage my growing anxiety by trying to find a way out of the nightmare for my character's sake.
I assume I am not the only one experiencing this kind of psychological disturbance with the game. At the time I found the upgraded bow, it was an achievement that only 8.5% of players had accomplished. That small statistic stuck in my mind. Weapons upgrades should be a common mechanic in games of this sort, yet this was a relatively rare achievement. Had I somehow pushed further into the gaming zones than others? Or was it just that people couldn't make themselves play long enough to reach it?
Although Steam lacks it, I would like to give the game a "Neutral" rating; there are aspects that I enjoyed and found challenging, but there are others that ultimately overwhelmed my game-playing satisfaction. However, because I could not find enough of the former to outweigh the latter, I will have to lean toward something I rarely do and--with apologies to Nate--give the game a thumbs-down.
