Using difficulty to compensate for simplicity and a lack of depth rarely works; the controls are too disjointed, the punishment too severe. It feels like I’m trying to play Dark Souls one‐handed.

So much of the game is damaged just from the dodge mechanic. Timing your dodges to an attack, managing your distance, and placing your strikes is good enough and possible. But dodging more than one attack on screen is too difficult for how often it happens. Most of the enemies can throw more than one projectile at a time and sometimes at different speeds. With a dodge interval of 1 full second, you're going to dodge the first one and get hit by the second. Sometimes, you will manage your distance well enough to dodge both of them, only to get hit by the third attack the enemy is winding up. The dodge propels you about 1/4 of the stage's length, which can often land you into another attack that you can't dodge out of because of the dodge interval. You may dodge away from an enemy and their attack, and then be chased by a projectile that you can't dodge because of the interval. Since dodging is the only way to avoid taking damage, as there is no crouch or jump, you will most of your time and die a lot trying to find ways to survive an enemy's attacks and less time attacking the enemy yourself. A lot of this game is good and solid with a nice art style, cool looking characters with interesting attack patterns, and good music, but the dodging makes the whole game so much harder. I'll give it a 6/10.
