Firstly this is early EA and so is nowhere near complete and has a few bugs. Having said that it is playable and really good fun and at only a tenner a bargain. A nice CRPG with a Finnish mythology feel. At the moment open world with a few quests. The Devs are refreshingly open about everything and for me it a little gem of a game If want to support an indie game and have a bit of fun then deffo buy it

enjoying it so far.........early access aside........early combat is,,,strange,,,it feels like there are to many hit points involved or something...it makes the combat feel overly long and drawn out...even with only one or two enemies. also a big QOL would be a local map and a quest marker in the world map, but I know its only early access

Edge of War is a tactical, turn-based, (medium) fantasy CRPG. Though, currently there is very little story and little in the way of character development outside of stat and skill choices. All of these are within expectations of a standard issue isometric CRPG. Classics like Persuasion, Stealth and Lore skills currently find very little use, though. The main focus for the current build is combat. The only exception would be Mechanics (lockpicking), which is essential to get the best possible loot. And there is plenty to be found! The setting is somewhat unique among CRPGs as it is apparently based on Finnish folk lore. You will still fight bandits and wolfs. But you will also learn, that Skyrim's trolls are a far cry, of what a troll can truly be. A 10m rock-skinned behemoth, whose scream alone can induce fear into your characters. In the background, and surely part of a narrative to come, is what appears to be an ancient, way more advanced civilization than the current medieval-ish one. Spirit energy (vaeki), a form of usable magic for your characters, based constructs will likely appear eventually, think robot soldiers. Part of one of your missions is to inspect parts of such a construct. I am very hopeful for more here! Noteworthy also are the 2 races that accompany the humans: Hirwio (moose headed humanoids) and Peyko (a mix between an ugly witch and a goblin, still human sized), both of which specialize, where humans are generalists. This is important as you are not supposed to be able to max out everything. Overall it's a bit of a fresh wind, though not too out there. The by far most interesting part about this game is the partial procedural generation of the world. I believe this is a great innovation and improvement on any not too narrative focused RPG. It allows for slight but relevant changes to every playthrough: other enemies, different loot, other special characters, other quest locations, other shops. I am currently on my 4th playthrough and can say that each felt significantly differentiated from the others. On full release this system alone will give this game an insane amount of replay value! As implemented as it is now, I would already view it as a tool worth revisiting for any CRPG developer. For example Pathfinder WotR with this kind system in place might have hooked me way beyond 500 hours (200 hours currently). I believe it is that essential! Lastly, there is the current technical state of the game: It is suprisingly stable and works almost without issues! There are some minor bugs and annoyances to be expected from early access. None of which were substantial or couldn't be remedied with a quick load. Autosave is already implemented and works perfectly fine! I suffered 1 single crash. The developers, a team currently mostly privately developing the game, is also aware of most of these bugs and answers regularly on Steam discussions. There is also a discord for further discussions. Overall I can recommend the game wholeheartedly, even if it's relativley short (per playthrough) at this point. This may just be a true diamond in the rough. I have high hopes for further developments!

Excellent game with loads of potential. Right now, I've only explored about 1/5 of the map and have max-leveled my characters. That is to say, there's plenty to do and plenty of loot from a still-immature game. One day, it'll be known as an amazing labour of love. All the best to the developers - I hope everything works out with your situation.

Not bad for Early Access. Combat mechanics are solid, skills and feats are basic but all work, I'm not the biggest fan of no voice acting or cutscenes - maybe that'll come one day. As far as what they have worked on so far, it works well. A minimap or at least an area map to pull up is hopefully on what I assume is their long list of things to do.

Recommended with a caveat: it will ultimately either upset you or anger you after you play this for a while because you'll realize that there's a lot here and so much potential but due to reality of sales and finances it'll probably never reach that potential with all the polish and the jankiness smoothed out. It's Finnish folklore based and that's not something you ever see except UnReal World It plays like Divinity: Original Sin where you are a duo and you can control one at a time. The combat at this time is AP based so don't move get more attacks in but moving costs an attack. It needs about 1000 sales to get the funds to the guys making it. Chicken and egg problems. I like it, I like where they're going with it (it has a big map now!); but the wolves barking drives my dogs crazy. Keep up the great work and hope you see more sales come your way.

Has promise, sad to see what happened to the developers. I had to support them for the obivous work and love they have placed into the game so far. I just hope it doesn't get abandoned in the long run and continue to get updates even if its not a regular schedule. There's enough here for a good solid proof of concept. Now needs the lore/content/polishing. Will keep my eye on this one for sure.

A good start, but I am a sucker for turn based tactical rpgs. Still needs a lot of work and given the team size, I wonder if they can achieve their ambition. But for the price, I think it's worth giving them a shot.

Lot's of promise in this one! There's not that much story content yet, but just roaming around the Northlands and fighting random encounters is fun and keeps the game interesting. Cool skills and dynamic environments make fights enjoyable. I also like the idea of recruiting new members to your party and growing them into a team - sometimes you lose them, but there's always more to recruit - only the toughest survive! The visuals of the game are really nice, especially the environments. The portraits looked still a bit wip, but i'm sure they will be polished in future updates. I really hope the team gets a chance to develop the game further and add more story content, as the basic mechanics work really well. Keeping an eye on this for future updates!

A big game update arrived April 2, 2024. A lot of new story content, NPCs, places to go, items, game mechanics. You command a four character party in a world which is inspired by Finnish ancient mythology. Two of the characters you create and two more volunteers join you, but you can make choices how to level up and equip all of them. Character editor is okay for a topdown 3D game: hair models, colors, body build, many sliders to edit the face. Combat is fun and it offers many tactical elements, like elevations of terrain, nature and walls can block attacks or your moving, you can knock down and push enemies, if you try use bows or magic when adjacent to enemy or try to disengage from melee they get a free attack against you, flanking enemies helps to hit them, you and enemies get different disabilities like poisoned, bleeding and crippled, thrown potions can set areas in fire, oil, poison gas or other elements/gasses/liquids. I've played some of the difficult combats many times, and tactical choices matter a big time. You are free to go where ever you want to. Quests you pick don't force nor limit where to go. In about 100 hours I haven't visited yet all the game maps, and that's what I'm doing: trying to see them all maps. No idea how many more maps are there, but from the large overall map I think I've seen over 50% of them. Of course there could be access to more large maps... At the moment the game is still lacking story content, NPCs and quests are only a few, but it is their next update. The graphics are really pretty at times. I've stopped to admire places a few times, waterfalls and streams especially at nights look wonderful, houses in villages have many details and look so authentic in style. There are different sort of terrains from swamps to forests, grassland, cliffs, roads, bridges and yards. And caves, which actually looked quite realistic considering the topdown view graphics. Downside about the graphics is, sometimes three tops hide your view to the party, and you may not see to the ground level without turning the camera. You can zoom up and down with mouse scroll, move the camera around the party to see the surroundings from other directions and move the camera around the map away from the party. There are two vision/detection ranges around your party, I don't know yet quite how that works, but in shorter range you can see colors, everything outside is just gray nature and buildings. A bit further than the colors range, you can also see enemies, but they are harder to detect. NPCs, things which are searchable (boxes, bushes etc) entrance markings into caves/buildings you can see only to the party's vision range. There is no crafting nor building of structures in the game. I asked if we would get building at some point, but it is not planned. Can't see why not: if I fell a tree, the fallen tree is still there when I return back later, and the previously expolred area is remembered, so the map changes are saved. Would seem a simple thing to me to build things. Optimization is still something they need to work on. I have a few year old computer, and many years old video card, but I don't have big issues playing the game. Sometimes AI thinks a while when making moves in the combat, and I need to wait for a few seconds. I haven't had any lag turning the camera or view angle, zooming up or down. I have hard drives, and entering from the large overall map to smaller maps takes a few second to load. EDIT, after the April 2024 content update. It was a big one! The most interesting new game mechanics where player's actions influence what will happen in the world. New thing called factions was introduced: they are groups that have their own goals in the game. The developers told that having each game run will be a different experience, we now have seen the beginning of it and in future content updates there will be more of it. Also I'm glad about addition of many new items and quality of items. Not just swords and pendants any more, now each item can have several different qualities: if you played Diablo games, you'll get the idea. The game never had lots of bugs, but crushing bugs was also done. I've always tried to find bugs and report them, but coming empty handed from bug hunting now. My experience is quite smooth sailing. With the newest game update notes, developers said that the next content update will see plenty of new weapons and armors again. The next update will add new tactical dimensions in to the combat, weapon types will be meaningfully different to use, as well as reasons to go heavy or lightly armored. And action points will see changes. Also come join the game's Discord channel. There's often beta testing new game versions you can join, make your suggestions and chat with us. It is a friendly community!
