Both of my kids' first video game they played all by themselves! The music instantly transports me to cuddling with them while they learn to use a controller. This developer created such a beautiful little game.
King Boo - A Gentle Introduction to Gaming
King Boo is a simple indie game with a clear purpose. It teaches young kids how to use a controller by guiding a cheerful ghost king around a colorful map, collecting items and exploring at their own pace. For my three to four-year-old son, this game was essential. It helped him understand movement, buttons, and basic game logic. More importantly, it gave us a shared experience that prepared him to jump into co-op games with me. He still asks to go back and play it, and I can see why. The game is friendly, intuitive, and designed with young players in mind. There’s no pressure, no combat, and no confusing menus. Just movement, exploration, and a sense of accomplishment when something sparkles or gets picked up.
Learning Through Play
What makes King Boo special is how well it introduces controller basics. Movement is smooth and forgiving. Objectives are simple and clear. The ghost king glides around the map in a way that feels satisfying, even for tiny hands still figuring out thumbsticks. It’s not flashy, but it doesn’t need to be. The game’s strength is in its clarity. My son learned how to navigate a 3D space, how to press buttons with purpose, and how to stay engaged without getting overwhelmed. That foundation made it easier for him to join me in other games later on.
Technical Trouble
Unfortunately, King Boo does have some issues. On our Linux-based Steam desktop, the game tends to freeze and crash. It’s consistent, so he ends up having to play on my windows PC. When it works, it’s great. But when it doesn’t, it can be frustrating, especially for a child who just wants to keep playing.
Verdict: A Great Start, With Caveats
Despite the technical hiccups, King Boo was a valuable first step into gaming for my son. It gave him confidence with a controller and helped us build shared memories around play. He still enjoys revisiting it, and I’m grateful for the role it played in his learning. If you’re looking for a gentle, low-pressure way to introduce a young child to gaming, King Boo is a great choice. Just be aware of potential crashes on Linux systems. When it runs smoothly, it’s a charming and effective tool for early gamers.
