THE GAME
MECHANICS
Lust & Magic: Chisalla in a Flower Basket (L&M) at first glance looks like a classic JRPG, but is in fact mostly a puzzle game. While the controls are similar, your MC has no stats and doesn’t need to fight any enemies. Instead, the majority of the gameplay consists of exploring a dungeon, solving puzzles and collecting treasure items (which serve no other purpose than completing an achievement). Solving the puzzles progresses the main storyline.
Controls: keyboard and mouse
STORY
You play as a young researcher (name of your own choice), hailing from the steampunk city of Lucia. At the start of the game, a storekeeper named Garion tasks you with researching a strange magical stone. This leads you, Garion and his ward Maria to the remote village of Eta, where you soon find out that magic hasn’t quite left the world yet.
QUALITY
L&M looks good. That’s pretty much the best that can be said about it; the quality of the artwork is really nice. The next thing that stands out is that it’s really, really short. You can probably wrap up the entire thing within the hour. Completing all the puzzles and objectives – particularly the treasure collecting – will take you a couple of hours more. The puzzles themselves aren’t very difficult, but do require thorough searching and attention to detail.
As usual with this publisher, the (machine) translation is passable, but at times difficult to understand.
THE GOODS
SUBJECT
The lewd in L&M is a small collection of scenes, featuring the four women as well as the MC. It looks like the devs tried to slip in a single scene for some of the major trope in the genre (tentacles, urination, stuck in the wall, etc.).
Keywords:
fluids, forced, straight, tentacles, urination
CONTENT
About 10 scenes, consisting of a few mostly similar-looking images each.
ACCESS
A few scenes are part of the main storyline; the rest requires you to complete a subquests and/or be at the right place on the right time.
QUALITY
As said before, the quality of the artwork is excellent.
VERRO’S VERDICT
I’m not sure what to make of L&M. It seems as if it’s not a complete game, but rather the first chapter of one, or perhaps a proof of concept for something bigger. While the story is neatly wrapped up at the end, you’re left feeling that it could – and likely should – have been something more. For example, at the start of the game you learn that you have the ability to read the mind of NPC’s by pressing A, but afterwards you hardly ever get to use the feature again. Which begs the question: why was it in the game in the first place?
Still, for the quality artwork, the puzzles and the modest price, I’m going to give it a hesitant thumbs up. If you’re up for some light-weight puzzling and treasure hunting with a few quality scenes as reward, this one may provide you with an entertaining evening.
